Earth dog breeding

Recommended Posts

I met a gentleman on the train down from Dublin last week. 85 years of age but as fresh as a daisy, We got chatting anyway and it wasnt long before we were talking dogs. To cut a long story short he was brought up on a farm that kept a lot of poultry and also kept racing greyhounds. I was surprised when he told me that the weapons they used to control the chicken killers were the best earth dogs in the area put over the retired greyhound bitches and the offspring often crossed back into a grey again to produce 1/4 earth dog 3/4 grey. when I asked what breed these earth dogs were he told me no specific breed just worker to worker but with jackrussel being the main type showing through. When I said it was an unusual cross to put in a lurcher the old man smiled and said "tell me any dog that is crossed into a lurcher today that instinctively knows the fox better than a working foxing terrier?" Found this to be interesting. anyone ever hear anything similar?
