i have no idea where to start, i thought about maybe sending him to a gundog school/camp or whatever u call them but dont know anyone who has done this...any of you guys done this? if so i would appreciate some advice (and none of the usual bolox that comes with the plummer terrier threads)....are gundog training schools worth while...?..how much do they cost???..any tips appreciated guys

think the missus would turn the gun on me if i brought another dog home....whats a jagd anyhow?

I dont really like the idea of someone else training a dog.. they will obey them but its you who is working the dog, not him. You are better of trying yourself and if you take the right approach you will be supprised at what results you can achieve.

a jagd terrier is a german breed wish is bred for every kind of hunting ,retrieving blood tracking flushing foxes deep or whatever they will do it , and tell the miss that you can get rid of some cuz the jagd will take over there job's

i see no reason that a biddable terrier can't bush and retrieve if thats what you want him for

my russel will retrieve rabbits, ducks, pigeon and anything else he can carry

a two tear old dog will learn but it may take more time to teach him what you want, does he bring a ball? this would be a good start to learn the command"bring/fetch/apport",get it set in stone and then substitute the ball with something else(pigeon wing/whole,rabbit etc).

i am presuming that recall etc are top to begin with.

the little dogs can and will be what you let them/give them the opportunity to be.

if in doubt get a book on dog training which will no doubt help you.

p.s. the jagd will retrieve nothing if not taught to.its a terrier like all others.

thanks waidmann, sound advice....he will chase a ball,i normally use a golf ball and he will chase it for hrs,he is sometimes a little reluctant to bring it back but im confident i can teach him that much..do u suggest a small treat on return?bit of praise obviously?he is quite obsessed with sticks but a loud NO from me stops that, he will go in bush and root about but he has no idea what hes looking for,i guess time is what i lack the most hence my thought on a training school or similar but im guessing that could be very expensive, but, i was hoping it would at least get him going on the right lines, id rather be honest and admit that this is new territory for me as i dont want to get it wrong and waste time or money, both of which is limited.

yes bud atreat every time he brings the ball back (and lots of girly squeaky voice) when he does that with all things he finds/you throw he will bring all sorts(dead rats, minging rabbits etc etc always be happy about it :whistling: ).

getting him to bush is less difficult than keeping him under controll(uncontrolled is useless and very annoying for all but the dog!!!) so make sure recall is good and the stop/wait on is sound 100% of the time beforehand.

thanks again mate, thats very helpful, hes a bright dog,im sure he will pick it up,i just want to make sure hes right for the job and also that he's safe,i have witnessed a dog that was a bit stubborn on recall and it nearly got shot due to it going too far ahead in the bush.
