Lamping lights - battery power

Recommended Posts

hello can anyone help!

i have a 1986 defender diesel with a standard alternator and standard battery ( but only 2 months old).

i have 2 spot lights on the front and a roof bar with 4 working lights on top. i work my handheld lamp straight from the battery with crocidile clips. I now want to put a roof mounted lamp on top but will i be drawing to much power. The roof lights fused last time i was out but they had been on for about 2 hours and the fuse box was red hot!! all the wiring is done correctly through the fuse box and with a relay.

Do i need a bigger battery or an alternator if i want to put the roof lamp on??

can anyone help??

My roof lights are wired direct to the battery. A feed from the battery to a relay, then from the relay feed to the lights, relay earth and feed to the switch. The lights earth through the light bar. You shouldnt need a new battery or altrernator.

Just make sure you have an adequate fuse between the battery and relay!
