how to trace a dogs history

Recommended Posts

hello all ,how do you confirm a dogs breeding do you take the sellers word for it or is it better just to buy a dog you like the look of.

my first dog was a solo pup thrown by a farm collie who had a late night visit from a lurcher no idea of what breeding he had but the pup turned into a great dog for me,worked the lamp, bushed, hunted up for the gun and was a joy to own.

when we took her to shows everybody had an idea of what it had in it.beddy,whippet,grey,wheaton.god it had more x's than the pope.

so how do you tell?

me personally i think that most people out there with a litter of pups will tell you whatever you want to hear for you to buy one, best way buy one off someone you know or breed your own

A question that should answer itself...

How do you tell ?

You took a gamble with your collie cur and it paid off but would you go down that road again, at least 12 months of bringing something on to see it not up to the standards you now have.

Far better to get a pup off parents that you have seen in the field and admire or purchase from parents that are advertised as such and see 'em before parting with your money, make sure they are what they are advertised as.

'Buyer beware' is the old adage and unless your Mrs is a hardened field sports woman, don't take her and deffo not any kids, they'll have you buy the first doe eyed little tyke your shown, dispite the fact that you wanted a Deerhound cross and these are Yorkies!

It's common sense (though that ain't too common!), think long and hard about what you want out of your dog for the next 10 years, choose the cross that best fits the bill, and go for the best available pup of that type! ;)
