Whatever you do keep the dog warm and quiet and don't try to run it until at least a fortnight has passed after the dog has STOPPED coughing. I know someone who didn't allow enough time for the dog to get better and f*cked its lungs up forever: meanwhile feed the dog warm, mushy food that can't irritate its throat and give it warm, not cold water to drink. Keeping the dog warm, dry and quiet is the most important though. Hope it gets well soon.

alright lads/lasses my dogs just caught kennel cough my mate said to use benylin cough medicine to get rid of it but would lyk other advise thanks

JUST THE SAME AS YOU OR I GETTING A COUGH & TRY STAY AWAY FM OTHER DOGS AS ITS JUST AS CONTAGIOUS. BENYLIN IS FINE 2 EASE SYMPTOMS,BUT THE COUGH WILL STILL HAVE 2 RUN ITS NATURAL COURSE. THE COUGH IS THE INFECTIONS WAY OF MAKING THE/ITS SPORES GO AIRBORNE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE & FIND ITS NEXT VICTIM../DONT RUN UR DOG TILL U ARE SURE IT HAS PASSED, AS ITS LUNGS WONT BE AT THEIR MOST EFFICENT.

Benylin will help with the cough but there is no cure for it, your dog could have it for upto 3 weeks, keep away from other dogs, don't run him, just because he isn't coughing doesn't mean it's gone. It is highly contagious and there is no cure.Sound advice from skycat.

Excellent advice, there is no cure and you will just have to wait for the virus to run its course. Rest, warmth, soft food for the sore throat. If your dog is particularly young or old your vet may prescribe antibiotics to prevent pneumonia, but don't take him in, phone first, leave the dog in the car til the vet says bring him in, don't risk infecting other dogs.

I don't know why folk would say give him a painkiller, really it won't make any difference.

Are you absolutely sure it's kennel cough? The cough is like a choking fit, rather than a cough. It's horrible to watch but there's nothing you can do to hurry it along, just to make the dog comfortable.
