Probably Norfork spades at a guess.

That sounds right . Long-handled spades ,sometimes with a little hook on the end designed to either retrieve rabbit corpses or catch onto the line of a collared ferret.

have to agree they also used them like a probe in the ground and listen to the fibrateing [spelt wrong]to get a mark to dig to the ferret

I've got two of the modern equivalent sounding poles without a hook! as used by the water companies when trying to find leaking drains or water mains these are steel rods with either a wooden concave, or aluminium hollow earpiece Stick them in the ground if your electronic locator is'nt working and the sound of a dog baying underground resonates and vibrates the steel rod, helping you to locate exactly where your dog is if modern technology fails
