Hip dysplasia

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if it is as common in crossbreed type dogs as it appears to be in the pedigree types?

Personally I have never come across this in any crossbreeds, only GSDs, Boxers and Labradors. Perhaps if there was a large amount of an affected breed in the mix with poor parents it could happen?

Thanks Ann Marie. I was just looking for peoples experiences before looking for a new pup. I know people with expensive pedigree dogs affected by this disease and i really would want to avoid any type or mix where it is likely to crop up.

If you are getting a pup with a lot of a certain breed like GSD and one of the parents are purebred, then they should have been hip-scored before being used to breed. I can't imagine there would be any problem with your average crossbreed lurcher, if that's what you're getting.

Hip Dysplasia can affect any breed or type. I boarded a Whippet/SBT with it, and recently a mongrel with it. Other breed I have boarded with it have been Labs and Rotties and a very crippled American Bulldog.

I had a first cross collie greyhound with an inherited fault in the hip area. It was not hip dysplasia, but the symptoms were similar. Have heard anecdotal of other first cross collie greyhounds with inherited hip problems, including one very severe case in a puppy.

Wow, the labs, Rotties and Bulldog I would have expected but not the crosses! I guess there is always going to be the odd one though.

Thanks folks for the info. I know several people with pedigree collies affected (some quite badly) with the condition. Interesting that there are collie crosses with it then.
