i do not class my working dogs as pets ,not to say i dont try and give them the best i can, feeding, kenneling ect,iv lost a few good dogs over the years and have been gutted on more than one occasion, but this is the game we are in and losses are all to frequant,a pet dog imo is a family dog, indoors comfort for the wife and kids ect,yet i suppose the definition of pet can be interpreted in different ways,i dont have to come home and face the family with bad news ref loosing another dog that they may have all become attached to,just my oppinion thats all

it depends on how people train there pets. No reason a well trained dog couldnt be both. If by pet however you meen a poorly trained dog that just runsa abouts parks a couple of times a week barking at everything then it wouldnt work.

I suppose it also depends on the idea of "work" if the work is just a thing you do cause you want to as opossed to needed to feed the family, you might have different ideas too

very good point and i will try use my old dog as an example as my new dog is still a pup.

he was kept indoors, went everywere with my mum, playful/friendly with kids good with other dogs, liked to go to the park for a game of fetch, guarded the house/garden very affectonet(sp), just like a family pet

but in work mode he would lamp off lead(only run when told), retrive live to hand, work with ferrets, do deer fox and the odd hare daytime, jump, good recall, walk to heal even when rabbits where in field, stockbroke, just like a worker

my opinion of a worker is a dog that is kenneled and only took out for exercise and work

My dogs are kept indoors but also work if they couldn't do a job ferreting lamping etc. they wouldn't be here they all work off lead dont bark unnecessarily or run out of control. Many people I've worked my dogs with have commented on their exceptional behaviour both on the field and at home. I wouldn't do it any other way they should first and foremost be treated as pets if you expect them to work for you. Thus, if things on the working side do not pan out they can always be rehomed within a family atmosphere having been fully socialised in all aspects of every day life.

I don't see any reason a working dog can't be a pet as well. As i speak all three of mine are asleep in front of the fire but come tonight two of them will be expected to do the job they were bought to do. My two lurchers are kenneled but are also house trained and they come in the house while im at home and are good as gold i barely notice they are there my bullx was lying over my girlfriends lap having his belly rubbed just this morning, but when out working they are different animals.

my lurcher works a treat and just as good as any other lurcher but she still lives in the house and is a pet to my sisters and family

no reason at all why a working dog carnt be a pet aswell and if anyone thinks that well there compeatly rong it doesnt affect how a dog works at all.

i am not saying that you CANT have a working dog as a pet, obviously you can,its just how you see it thats all, never known one dog to be any worse or even better, just because it lives indoors, thats all im saying

a working dog should be kept as a working dog but still looked after properly just like you would treat a pet dog

good point and also most working dogs are treat better than most pet dogs in regards to diet, exercise and trainning
