Just wondering how you all got started working dogs,i started off going out with a mate and his brother with the lurchers thought it was the best thing in the world until i found working terriers, have also tried shooting but not for me,i still like a night out with the lamp but id rather be digging some brave warrior out of a sett.

Yep. Basicly, got born. Saw there were things that moved. Went after them. Probably exactly the same as the very vastest majority of us.

I don't think many are in any way 'made' to do it. Bit like Dogs. Born wanting to do it or else prefer football. I can't stand football.

Each to his own.

i used to run my bulls at the rabbits on the local golf course just to keep there fitness up

then as my old bull was slowing down i spotted a rescued litter of whippet Xs and thought id get a little bitch to pep my old lad up

never really thought about putting any training in to her and i just let her be

she was a happy enough little pup didn’t need a lead with her, she was always stuck to the side of my leg until we reached the fields or such

then at 7 month old she caught a leveret...well i was gob smacked this was a new thing to me my bulls have caught a few bunny’s over the years but nothing to what id just seen

so that was me hooked

owe it all to her :yahoo:

I had a very lucky childhood. My dad was a caretaker, at a huge teacher training college near barnsley [wentworth castle, featured on the restoration programme last year, the greenhouse one] We lived in a tied flat, and i had free rein, over all the grounds, as it was a womens only college, and kids could do that in them days.At the age of four, my uncle gave me a diana tinplate airgun, and that was that.Every opportunity, i was out with me dad, at first light, rabbitting in the castle grounds, which were huge.He used a single barreled bsa, and let me shoot at the rabbits first, with my popgun, then leathered them when they ran :D This, and the succesion of lurchers he kept, ensured a burning interest in fieldsport, though i didnt come to fishing whilst older.Great days indeed, and highly unlikely modern kids will have the opportunities i had.

this picture is the palladian wing, of the house. The picture is taken from the summer house, and there used to be a huge earth under it, which we dug several times. Its gone now.

we had pet collies from working strains, even had a few dobers and when i was old enough to walk i followed them through the fields and watched them work. it was a natural thing that went from there on. my dad done a bit of hunting in his time but i discovered hunting before i knew he had done any..... when i was 12 i got a russell from working strain and hunted and it went to ground from an early age. i guess i started digging and then found lurchers and lamping to be more suitable to my lazy nature (dont like having to dig big holes, i have delicate hands  )

My folks used to run a big sports and social club, My old man brought a sturdy looking tan and white Parsons Russell X Whippet home from his friends allotment, his mate was going away for the weekend and left the dog with us. The dog was left to rome the allotment to keep rats and cats away from the blokes pigeons and hens. After being with us an hour the dog found his way into the cellar with the barrels and ales etc where kept and nailed to rats. To say i was amazed was an understatement, busy behind the bar my folks took little notice and told me to go play on the football pitches at the back of the club. A huge enbankment met the perimeter of the field and i knew this wilderness like the back of my hand ( being 8 years old its was my own little jungle ) Off i went with oscar in toe, made my way to the first footpath when the dog took off after a woodpigeon and nailed it in some bramble, amazed at the handyness of this tan and white tool i carried on through the nettles, bramble and thawns. At the bottom of the field was an old tractor, the groundsman had never got round to moving it after it broke down and as a result it became permenant. Messing about in it like young lads do the dog jumped in and was having a mooch, all of a sudden becoming frantic and scratching like a lunatic under the seats. BAM a rat come flying from under the seat i was sitting on and began to rocket across the field, needless to say the dog was out the tractor and on its back within seconds.

Delighted at the fun id had i was gutted when the bloke came back to take the dog back.

A few years on i got my Jack Russell bitch, kim and that was my introduction. I also joined a local fieldsports club where i met Dogginlad, club was a great idea, run by a great fella who introduced alot of lads to the sport and kept em off the streets. Sadly the clubs no longer running. :(
