Elk and Antelope

Recommended Posts

In Arizona there is a lottery draw for several big game species - Elk , Antelope , rifle Deer , Bear and Big Horn Sheep. The application deadline for 2011 Elk and Antelope is early Febuary the application process is onlie at azgfd.gov. There are seperate hunts for archery and these are the hunts that I apply for.

In our archery hunt camps we have a 95% success rate on 300+inch bulls. We have been hunting and guiding for elk since the early 1970's..... I allway's wait in anticipation for the draw result's - a Bull Tag in a good area is better than winning money in the regular lottery.....Just thought I would let you know about the application deadlines.... I dont see much about archery hunting on this site - mabey I havn't been looking in the wrong places.

OK here goes - Bowhunting Elk is done one of three way's - Spot and Stalk - Calling (during the rut) and from ground blinds or tree stands over water holes similar to the African hide methods. I prefer to the tree stand method as it gives me time to place my shot and get a clean kill. Calling during the rut is loads of fun and can get scarry at times when you have a 1500lb bull screaming and belching spit 2 or three yards away and you cant move because you might spook himk or get gored..... Sphincter factor of at least and 8 on a scale of 1 to 10...... I think Elk are easy to hunt it is just getting a good tag; Bull tags are lottery only for the good areas and I get drawn about every five years....Bonus point's are added each year that you dont draw a tag.... Elk are similar to Red Stagg

I have been bow hunting and shooting archery since I was 5 years old my brother is somewhat of a Archery celebrity so I was trying to keep up with the bro....I hunted tarditional style with recurves and longbows untill about 12 years ago I put together a compound setup for an Antelope hunt and got hooked on the perfomance and longer range capabilities. I also had a mishap with a power tool that gave me a plastic knuckle in my right middle finger so mechanical release is needed.

We also have a critter called a Javelina - They look like a wild boar but they are not in the pig family - these creatures were made to shoot arrows at. A large Boar Javelina will go 50lbs and has canines about 3inches long they hang together in heards up to 30 strong and are near sighted. If a hunter is stealthy and stays down wind you can sneak right up on the bunch and fling arrows like a madman....

The winter archery deer season is the last two weeks of Dec and the entire month of Jan. About 6 weeks long. Javelina is the month of Janurary so both can be hunted in Jan. We have Mule Deer and Coues Deer. Mule deer bucks can go as big as 250lbs and the Coues deer are are much smaller a big Coues buck is 100lbs - better eating though....My buddies cant beleive that I take a Jack russle out in the feild - She can blood trail a deer , she loves fox and bobcat calling and goes nuts over Jackrabbits (Big Hares). Lot's of disbeleif when I tell folks that I hunt over her.....SGS::))

Continued bow hunting saga- When we hunt Elk we put up a good sized camp the elk hunting units are at least one hundred miles from home so to stay comfortable we have a safari camp - we have a large cook/dinning tent. Sometimes we set two or three sleeping tents and a shower tent. One of our large tents is 13 foot X24foot. These camps are very comfortable.

My brothers camps are famous for great cooking and a high success rate...

My camps are usually for bowhunting Coues Deer and are generally smaller - Just as comfortable and the cooking is also great. I like to hunt the Coues in late August early Sept - during the first season. The bucks are in velvet. We generally hunt them out of tree stands or ground blinds over water holes. Coues deer are considered the most difficult northamerican deer to hunt. The ultimate slam is to take all 29 species (record book minimum) of big game in northamerica with a bow - many hunters save the diminutive Coues deer untill last and the struggle for years to get a record book buck.

I hope someone gets a laugh or something from this - thanks SGS :D
