for hunter1995 bit of info to help lad

Recommended Posts

hey mate just some tips on all the questions you have asked lol

ref laying up, in my oppinion both can kill under and some ferrets will bolt the rabbits so get your shovel and locator ready.

alot of people prefer gills and if they lay up send a hob down to push them on and get more rabbits out then either wait for the hob or dig to him.

Training wise ive never trained them but been lucky to get good workers already. my reading on the subject is to take them with older ferrets if possible if not put plenty of piping in your hutch/run with bits of titbits inthere to encourage them along, most take to it well.

ref caging, the bigger the better, the little pesks love to run around and climb i use a chicken hutch bought of ebay for 100 pound and this houses my 2 gils, do a search through the forums there is loads of pics on ones that have been built or bought. Make sure they have some where to sleep pref two differnt spots as some times they like to sleep sepearate also lots of toys, tubes balls etc to keep the occupied.

If you think you cage is secure and ferret proof check again then check again then check again, them feckers can escape from anything.

Feeding i give mine a rabbit every otherday fresh water daily if no rabbits in stock i get proper ferret food and chicken mince and they get enough to eat in one sitting.

books. google is your friend.

Working Ferrets by Jackie Drakeford

FERRETING An Essential Guide by Simon Whitehead

are two reccomended by people on here so there is a good start.

Best thing mate is to find some willing to take you out. ive learned so much in one year from the lads i go with its unbelievable simple things like differnt ways to put purse nets down, how to use long nets both loose and ones with poles attached. a better to way to kill the rabbit than just the plain stretching i was used to.

Also stat reading through all the pages within this forum there is tons of info from people who have been doing this longer than me and you have been alive together and doubled and a few more years added on.

things to buy,

purse nets i would reccomend a min of 30.

locator (if budget allows saves a lot of time.

a ferret (realy helps lol) i would always advise to have two just to keep each other company

shovel (borrow your dads)

a good knife to gut in the field, and a million other uses.(only carry the knife when ferreting dont want you getting arrested)

and thats it realy all the rest you can save up for as your going along.

Also mate if its pocket money or a job you have put a small percentage of it away to put towards vet fee's last thing your parents will want is a big bill at least you can put something towards it.

these are just a few things to think about there is much more out there so keep reading and please feel free to ask questions on this thread i'm sure people will add things to this or give you other advice different to me as i said every one has there own opinions.

Wellcome to the world of ferreting enjoy.
