well i can best describe it as looking as if the thing next to the tear duct (sorry dont know the name) has gone in towards the centre of the eye, i have shon a tourch in it and there are no scratches on the eye or underneath the eyelids, she is keeping the eye open and it doesnt seem to be bothering her...we only noticed it after we let her outside for a pee....any ideas what has happened?

I think what you are talking about is the third eyelid: an inner membrane used to protect the eye: if this is showing across the eye then it is usually down to either an infection in the eye, a sore eye that has been bashed, or sometimes even an illness or infection elsewhere in the body.

Not usually a problem in itself, just an indication that something isn't right. Monitor it and check if dog is under the weather in any way. If it doesn't clear up in a day or two see a vet: but you can check the eye now with a small torch to see if there is a foreign body stuck either in the eyeball or under the lids.

Note: if there is something like a thorn stuck in the eyeball then DO NOT TRY AND PULL IT OUT YOURSELF. You could drain the eye ball of its fluid and cause a lot of harm. Getting thorns out of eye balls is a job for the professionals.

Of course the eye ball could just have been scratched by something, in which case it should heal up by itself in a couple of days. You can bath with very weak cooled tea but otherwise leave well alone.
