Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter 16
Gday all, Did a run down to a mate who runs a Ferret shelter today. Was there to pick up one of my Jills who had gone into season after her speying operation. She had a tiny little piece of ovarian tissue left inside her from the initial surgery. This had caused her to come into season, swollen vulva, very clucky, the whole deal basically. So it was a relief to have her all fixed up quickly and cost free to boot ... Initially it was thought she may have had renal failure and that would have been a blow for both Molly & the family as she is very well liked. So i'm stoked she's on the mend, just the stitches to remove next week, & thats easy enough to do myself. While we were there today i picked up 'Twilight' as he was named by Andrew the caretaker. An Albino Hob who's been desexed. Excellent nature and a strong boy at 12 months or so in age, with not too large a frame in the body. So far the trio have got along very well, there was the usual arse sniffing lol & a bit of ear and neck pulling,.... But by all account's they seem to be going well... Hopefully in a few months time he will be handy stirring any hard to move Bunny's or razzing up the Jills if they're down too long. Cheers, Shaun Quote Link to post

stubby 175
I presume "de sexed" is the same as our castration?, Ive got four castrated hobs here, bloody good for ferreting in summertime, as most intact hobs want to either fight or mate the jills, and Im not a lover of putting jills down holes that are in heat Quote Link to post
Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter 16
Why has he been desexed mate ?? All Ferrets that are housed in shelters here in Victoria Aust are desexed. Reason for it is pretty simple & straightforward, Frequently each spring more ferrets are bred than can go to good homes. There a fashionable pet it seems nowadays & there is a lot of impulse buying from now until Christmas. Unfortunately a lot of these ferrets go to the wrong home. Like a good deal many other animals in this world, they are bred for all the wrong reasons. I have no issues at all with anyone who breeds ferrets, as i used to often years back. These days i am more than content to have them desexed as it makes for a less smelly ferret particulary when inside as mine are housed. Also it has no bearing whatsoever on their workability. Added bonus is never having to lay up your favourite worker, because she's acting like a porn starlet Thinking back it makes for a lot less work as you all know that more cages come with pregnant jills, more food etc. Great if you want to do that & have the time & dedication. One other positive is that for the most part the jills live a longer life as there not subject to the rigours of multiple litters. Most ferrets in Aust are desexed at around 8 months or so of age. I presume "de sexed" is the same as our castration?, Ive got four castrated hobs here, bloody good for ferreting in summertime, as most intact hobs want to either fight or mate the jills, and Im not a lover of putting jills down holes that are in heat Yes, there great when there been cut, not as rampant to the Jills for sure... makes for harmony when housing them together as i have. The only issue with ferreting here in the height of summer is obviously the heat. Still a real earl morn start & a finish a few hours later can work real well. The other one to be wary of is snakes, we have some areas where they do prevail, It's a sad day to loose a good ferret to a snake. Having said this, for me i haven't come across them in my time as yet.... lucky i guess. Young bunnys can cause slow ups also....But this season they seemed to get off to an early spring & i think that by late Dec, there will be some very good stock of 3/4 grown bunnies in good numbers. Time will tell... Cheers, Shaun Edited November 4, 2009 by Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter Quote Link to post
