Guest vimto.
I noticed this Stag the other day whilst i was collecting logs he was with about half a dozen or so Hinds sunning themselves in some long grass he was the last to get up and follow on after the hinds. He had what looked like a bit of a dicky antler and my first thoughts were it was a malformed one? Anyway on the same day in the evening i went to the same area only to see a much bigger stag with the same Hinds and no sign of the malformed one? Yesterday they were both in the same field with a group of Hinds, the bigger Stag charging the smaller one off as soon as he got close anyway all this disturbance moved the Hinds into my direction with the big guy following and it wasn't long before they winded me and moved on, the Stag first to vacate the area pretty sharpish. I suppose he hasn't got as big as he has without being a bit flighty.. The Hinds moved on and the malformed one just disappeared through an hedge about 400 yards away. This morning i went to the same area and after first seeing a big group of hinds i decided to try the same place as the day before and sure enough the malformed stag was there on the same field with that Solitary old Hind and her calf. Her daughter that was with her the other week had most probably chosen to join the bigger group that frequently visit the ground? Anyway they were feeding into the wind near on 400 yards away so i moved quick anticipating there retreat into cover. They walked back down the field with the wind which they had just fed up and walked straight past me at about 100 yards towards the young alder plantation. The malformed stag gave me an opportunity and he was down with a nice broad side shot. After a close examination it was revealed that the antler deformity was indeed an injury probably caused in the rut and must of been causing him some kind of discomfort from the lump of bone movement under the skin? v-max 2
Hi it looks as though your stag had a fight that cracked/broke his pedicle or part of skull & will be quite a fresh wound from the rut & he dose not look an old lad either or an old lad that is going well back going by body condition but he is in the best place now & a very good stag to cull. Guest vimto.
After a close inspection Marty there was no infection or any other surface wound on the stags head. It was just a great lump of bone movement under the skin and in my opinion would of made a certain full recovery from this injury but still a typical Cull beast. Those Bino`s are over 12 months old and due to the poor light conditions on this stalk i`m glad i chose Leica because if i`d of gone for the Swarovski`s then this posting would of probably been made some time next week Never cut corner`s or sacrifice quality marty Here`s the group earlier in the week just after i disturbed them with the chainsaw, notice the cull stag to the far right still lying down circled in red..
