Squirrel_Basher 17,102
'Keeper friend of mine invited me to join him for one last stalk of the buck season and as usual my lucky streak held .He said he had seen two bucks battling in the rut and that they appeared to be locked at one time but as he drove closer they parted with the younger buck running off leaving the older fella exhausted and defeated .The loser walked into a ditch and was found dead on their first partridge drive last Thursday .He had died of mulitple puncture wounds to the abdomen it appeared .[no pics im afraid as it was burnt as soon as he found it ,very clean chap ]Thursday evening saw us doing a circuit of the land .This place covers about 1000 acres so obviously we needed to drive .I was sent on ahead at various points to check out the valleys on foot and peering through a bush on one small valley top i saw a buck grazing down the bottem at a fair distance . Motioned to the keeper who joined me for an inspection ,a young 4 pointer in very good condition but a cull none -the -less .The wind was wrong to get in from where we were so i went around clockwise to see if i could come up on him for a shot .These are the times when uncertainty creeps in as to whether the stalk will be successful but dont forget the luck .Walked down the previous valley ,along a road and into the bottem of his valley .A bend in the valley kept him hid until i got to the turn . I crawled to where i could see his last position and there he was ,still feeding ,head down and facing away upwind ,perfect .Crawled a bit then rested and crawled the last few yards to an ant hill ,my favourite rest .No bipod ,good steady rest and bang ,down he went shot through both lungs at about 140 yds .The truck was heard behind me even before i started the gralloch ,this boys on the ball .The keeper was adament that this was the killer buck and a check over revealed a laceration along his back from fighting . Ive no doubt that he was right as he knows his stuff . The watery autumn sun was well on the way down by now as the pic shows and what a sunset As we drove out the valley ,a doe chasing youngsters stopped right infront of us for a second but not long enough for a pic . Back at the larder ,the buck went 43lb clean . Had a lookout with the lamp after that and i managed a brace . Quote Link to post
