gnasher16 31,371
gnasher an interesting point you made about gerry cooney not getting a title shot if he had been black just for the record gerry cooney had 28 wins 3 defeats 24 kos 2 of those defeats came after a come back when he was well and truly over the hill thats when spinks beat him the same spinks that had two decisions over larry holmes and holmes was one of the all time greats some of cooneys victims included jimmy young ron lyle ken norton who he kod in 54 secs also eddie lopez who was usa heavy weight champion larry holmes says cooney was a much harder puncher than earnie shavers ring magazine has cooney ranked 53rd in its all time list 100 greatest punchers so i think he earned his heavy weight title shot on merit not on what colour he was for the record bartley was a very talented boxer as well eddie thomas offered him a contract and publicly stated he was in his opinion the best heavy weight in the country but bartleys heart was in the bare knuckle job larry holmes also said michael spinks was technically the best fighter he faced including being ali,s chief sparring partner !....a fighter will always say his opponents were better than they actually were !....gerry cooney had a devistating left hook and a decent jab....thats all !......by far his best fight was shocking ken norton which got him a title fight......i was briefly living in america in 82 and around a few gyms....cooney actually suffered a disc problem while trying to get to grips with a floor to ceiling ball of all things ! ....meaning the fight was postponed.....during this gap holmes was supposed to fight renaldo snipes who he was due to fight previous to cooney.....the snipes fight was again put back as it was generally accepted snipes was a " risky " fight...if not a money making fight.....cooney was a huge money fight because of media hype, great white hope etc etc...cooney had very few good moments in the fight....in fact apart from a few great left hooks he had very few good moments in his career.....victor valle cooneys trainer went on record both before and after as saying cooney was not ready for holmes and blamed racial pressure as the reason for cooney competing out of his depth. As regards bareknuckles....there have been many claims over the years as for what " could " have been done in the pro ranks.....most have been honest and admitted if they could have earned the money they would have.....i tend to agree. A good friend has been working with young billy joe saunders...gr son of absollom beeney.......apparently his biggest obstacle is getting him out of the bad habits brought about by a knuckles upbringing....still a great young talent anyway and time will tell.....cheers incidentally spinks 2 wins over holmes were both hotly disputed...and both when holmes was finished......spinks could have been light heavy champ forever....but as a heavy he didnt have it....im pretty sure spinks and cooney were the same age....31,so far from past it Edited September 14, 2009 by gnasher16
brookie 1,193
name='bigdan' post='1230602' date='Sep 12 2009, 09:10 AM']ive meet some furys there a very hard fighting breed there related to barty gorman he was the best traveling man to put his fist up tyson also looks like dan rooney id bet there related he had some stopping power unbelievable im not sure about tysons boxing ability but i bet in time he will be a big name in the travelling world as a figher believe me them boys are breed to fight maybe with less mouth more experience he'll be good very fight hes learning Bartley was full of wind and piss, he got knocked out on a regular basis, but he was old school and a gent. you should go over to nottingham and repeat this to bartleys son shaun im sure he would be interested to hear it coming from you man to man especially now his fathers dead and cant answer for himself i know where he is if you dont know the way pm me if you want to ican give him a ring and let him know your on your way and pick you up some where along the way if you like . bartley was the best man out there on his day second to none. john was good make no mistake about that but bartley was a different league if he was ever knocked out it was by a bus. haslam side winded him from behind in coventry and split the roof of his mouth open bartley got up and destroyed him in seconds . theres alot of piss and wind on this site and talk is cheap and people can tap crap into the key board all day and night weather its slagging good coursing dogs or good men. bartleys grandmother was my grand fathers sister as is john fury a second cousin to me. let me assure you people who slate these men and doubt theyre ability with theyre hands if you were in the company of these men you would tremble and squeal like pigs if you told them they were piss and wind to theyre faces as for being knocked out the only way you stop them is to kill em as for tyson hes not been able to train for some time because of a back injury what you dont take into account is hes still a boy hes not matured yet give im a few years and hes going to be the new gerry cooney only better if you look back on your post you said he was all piss and wind now your claiming to be a close friend and for the record i dont lick arse and i dont call dead men over either . the name ringtail comes to mind :bye: If you look at my post i said barty was a gent and knew him well and i also now sean well, i don't talk ill of any one out of mallice.Tell sean Cash said hello and he knows were to find me and get you're tongue from up his arse :wankerzo4: :wankerzo4:

gnasher16 31,371
i thought holmes won both of those fights against spinks gnasher going on to renaldo snipes wasnt that a great fight against holmes . holmes showed what a great champion he was getting up to win me too brookie...at that time politics still played a big part in boxing,if you remember holmes was about to beat marcianos 49 fight unbeaten record if he beat spinks....i believe the big chiefs didnt want a black man breaking a white mans record and going down in history and were going to find any excuse they could to stop holmes winning.....that said spinks did fight a courageous fight both times. holmes was a very good champion his fight with earnie shavers was one of the best heavyweight fights i ever saw.
