Walkertalker 0
Just got some minced Pheasant yet it has small amounts of shot in it. Is the shot still made from lead or is it some substitute like in the lead shot for fishing. Seams harder than lead to me. Only has a very small amout but the meat is quality do you think it is safe to give to the dogs. Cheers.

waidmann 105
falconers wont feed shot birds because the birds have a VERY acidic stomach. this reacts with lead and poisons the bird. we eat lead regularly when eating pheasant, duck etc and to no harm ( i hope not anyway ) i hve given my dogs meat from shot birds( if mangeld) and had no trouble. if feeding very often then check with a vet( dogs stomachs are more aggressive than ours too) in small ammounts i don't see a problem.if every day i'd check with a vet, atb

waidmann 105
hi paul, they banned the use of lead in some parts of germany because the raptors were dying of lead oxide poisoning from shot game( sea eagle etc) not sure how it affects falcon's/hawks. not heard of any trouble with dogs.humans keep shot in the stomach apparently for years to no effect. atb
monkjack 0
if you look on the international falconry forum website you will see why many responsible bop owners dont feed shot birds or rabbits to their birds there a threads about birds dying from lead poisoning . my mates use hand held metal detecters to detect pellets and shot from pheasant and rabbit. ive seen a rabbit that was shot and killed with one pellet hav five pellets taken out so its better safe than sorry
