Wanna be farmer 0
Hi, I have purchased a Jack Russell from an owner who neglected her a little. Her two back dewclaws are hanging off rather badly by a little bit of skin. The two front dewclaws are fine, but it's just the back ones i am worried about. I phoned a vet a few minutes ago and they quoted me £147 to have the two back ones removed. I have just phoned the PDSA, and they won't give me a price untill they see the bitch and have had a look at her. Is £147 a little excessive? I am willing to pay it, but i am just wondering if anyone knows anywhere around Northampton that would do it cheaper. Thanks' Edit: spelling error Edited August 19, 2009 by Wanna be farmer
Wanna be farmer 0
I have got her an appointment to see the PDSA vets tomorrow at 5:10 and the vet will take a look at her and tell me how much it's going to cost. I'll update you readers tomorrow after i have been to the vets.
Scallywag 78
My russell has rear dew claws too - I can't believe the breeder didn't just nip them off in the first few days. They're barely attached but so far haven't caused any trouble. I wouldn't put her through an anaesthetic just to have them removed but if she ever needs one for some other reason I'll definately have them removed at the same time. I had the front ones off my 8 year old terrier because they regularly got injured, meaning the dog was in pain and out of action for several weeks at a time. The dog was at the vet for a couple of hours and well recovered in 10 days......never looked back.....£ well spent. Edited August 20, 2009 by littlefish

I wish breeders would just take them off on day three, would save a lot of trouble later on.
Wanna be farmer 0
Thanks' for the comments. The vet said they should be fine for the time being but if they start getting injured it's best to remover them. They're not attatched to any bone so you could just snip them off, but the vet said she needs to go under an anaesthetic. I will get them removed if she has any troubles. But thanks' again for the advice.
