Thankyou to the few (3)who helped with my advert for greyhound ferrets..ref countrymans weekly.

I have since seen little ferrets from the north which are worked on the rat population and these are known as whippet ferrets.

They are small and work well against the rat ,but are to small to take on rabbits down here in the south.

They would get to much stick from southern rabbits.

Having given up on the long lost greyhound ferrrets of old, I came across some ferrets which were a bit lean due to the lack of rabbit ,the owner being of the old school, will not use the dry foods of today.

They look the part long, lean and quick, perhaps the greyhound were kept short of meat to work better.

if anyone knows someone who breeds them, please contact me.

This message is for the guy who promised me a pair of reds, have they produced yet.

if they have, please email me

REGARDS Mick

hi funny enough i came across an old hunting friend a few months ago who asked if i would like a couple of youngsters from a strain of ferret which i bred ten or so years ago,the original jills came from the abbots bros, they were classed as greyhound ferrets,i worked and bred these ferrets for years crossing them with wild polecats, the young lad i gave a few youngsters to used them mainly on rat but would do a bit of rabbit control, the young i bred were evil sods and would have a go at anything, now i have been lucky enough to have two very nice white jills off the line dating back some years,i dont think you would better these ferrets but you are welcome to give me a bell next year where i hope to have some youngsters, they will be bred with a first class working hob.all the best

Abbot brothers, werent they in Norfolk? I use to get ferrets off them back in the 80's, when i lived in the UK.

I use to get them by rail. Wonder are they still doing the same thing?

i had the number from the exchange and mart years ago they were still going in the late seventies because i had the greyhound ferrets off them, they certainly didnt close in 1963 because i would only have been two years of age,i had the same problems with them handling, they were right nasty sods what i can remember,i kept the same line going for years frank and bred wild polecats with them ,i have written about the polecats in earth dog runnuing dog and also the countrymans weekly unfortunately the adult polecats have died now and i didnt breed off them ,i have had two youngsters from a local blacksmith who have kept my line going for years ,he mainly uses them on rats but i was glad to have the line back, i have got other ferrets which i use for ferreting but i know this line was a good hunting one, hopefully i will breed them next season with if i can a very dark polecat type hob,the problem i had crossing them with wild polecats is that the polecat is a very nervous animal.i out crossed the young season after season and still found them very nervous, thats the last thing you want out in the field is a load of nervous ferrets who want come back to you.they look great but they are best left for the showing type.

Thanks ferret. I agree, polecats are nervouse, i had a half cross off a wildlife park in Northapton, way back in 83 and it was a bugger for screaming and prick acting.

But, a deadly ferreter, if somewhat a bit too fast.

Cheers,

Frank.
