Guest Frank
Im not new to ferreting. I ferreted up untill 10 years ago, and had a break from it. The spade in the picture seems ok for the job of ferreting, in my opinion anyway. My job as a council worker, involves me and work mates digging deep holes sometimes. We use fairly bog standard spades, weaker then the one in the pic. I bought my one along for the crack, to test it out, worked just fine. What do you need to dig out a small ferret anyway, a minny digger is it? You dont need to make huge holes, to get your ferret and bunnys. Cheers, Frank. Link to post
Guest alastair
some of that army stuff is tough old kit, cant see in pic how thick the metal is but every one to thier own mate,i use a fencers curved post shovel, are vehicles are not far away when out so if we need a spade or shovel then its no problem cause im a brickie they are on me truck anyway.some people need to take huge amounts of kit with themwhen out, this is a illness called (all the gear no idea) Edited July 29, 2006 by alastair Link to post
Vermin Dropper 2
On another note; Are you new to ferreting? Only it breaks my heart to see new comers kitting themselves out with spades and knocker boxes. In my day we just managed our ferrets right and didn't go out expecting lay ups and landscape alterations I would Always rather go out with the right tools and not need them, than go out without em and be hopping around like a right tit, kicking yourself, The spade in the picture seems ok for the job of ferreting, in my opinion anyway. What do you need to dig out a small ferret anyway, a minny digger is it? Frank, To me the spade looks ok for light, sandy soil, (hard to tell from a pic, and only you know where you are going to use it) It looks like a 4x4 spade- for digging out bogged down wheels so wouldn't need to be especially tough, the main problem for me would be that it's got a wooden shaft (and an old 1 at that) the time you find out how strong it is- is when you need it most, snap it then and you're buggered. Working for the Council..... I'm sure you could "find" an old all steel shovel  , get yourself one of those and use a disc cutter/ angle grinder to cut the blade down to a suitable rounded size and shape (look at Woodga's photos. Guest chilli
Frank things dont add up with you , If you have to "dig deep holes " as part of your job you should be equipped out just for that job . I use to put up power lines an would have to hand dig holes regularly as part of it . We had a range of shovels an grafts to do the job , to be honest iam surprised that someone who has been ferreting before has to ask such questions  . Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
(all the gear no idea) Love that one! Link to post

Guest Frank
I never used a spade before when i ferreted. Just waited. Never again. So this time round, i want to do it proper. I will take closer pics of the spade, that photo, does not do it justice. Chilli, you are probably wondering, why we dont use Bull dozers ect at work, simple, in some situations, not a good idea. I got given the spade and it seems to work, if i come across a stiuation where it was all rock ect, i would not bother, im out for a good day, not a working day. Frank. Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,102
As a council worker ,you will at least get some use from the spade as an aid to lean on . :11: On a serious note ,If you ever work a terrier mate then dont rely on the wooden handle . Link to post
