Grif Rhys Jones

Hi Folks

I dont know how many of you have been following the issue of canoeists gaining unhindered access to Brisish waters but it seems to be a popular news item this week, at the top of the heap seems to be Grif Rhys Jones who states that Canoeists should have access to all waters and disrupt anglers at every given oppertunity.

Grif has a programme on this Sunday (part of a series) and may i suggest that we all do our part in promoting both Angling and proper river management by boycotting this rediculous mans series, and encouraging others to do so as well.

Canoeists will make no contribution to our rivers either financial or in terms of river maintainance.

They will however be free to trample over spawing redds damage banksides and disturb both migratory and non migratory fish.

Grifs views are an affront to anglers who work hard in all weathers to preserve the enviroment in which they spend their leisure time, so lets all hurt him where it hurts most, and thats with low viewing figures.

With any luck the BBC will pull the plug on the series before it runs its completion, and as anglers we will have sent out our collective message loud and clear

I am a keen fisherman but also used to do alot of canoeing.

I used to have to pay for a licence on the norfolk broards and I dont recall doing any damage to the river or upsetting any anglers.

Dont forget there are good and bad people in all walks of life. I have seen plenty of damage done by anglers, vegetation hacked down and worst of all the rubbish left behind.

Shouldn't we all try and get along and work to improve the waterways together?

Marek.

Don't see a problem myself, there's enough of the countryside out of bounds to the majority of folk as it is. The way you're going on, it's as if they'll be tearing up and down the rivers on fecking jet skis.

You seem to be missing the point entirley.

Grif Rhys Jones is campaigining for total river access for all canoeists on all waters, and there are proposed bills to this effect due to go before the welsh parliment and other bodies in the near future.

If these bills are passed then you will see total access to all rivers for all canoeists.

these canoeists will not have to pay for river access, there will be no onus on them to care for the waterway in any way whatsoever.

spawning redds will suffer, breeding fish will suffer, i am sure you get the picture.

and when you are on the river bank enjoying an afternoons fishing how will you feel when a group of canoeists start larking about in the river runing your sport ?

We pay for our sport and maintain our quarrys habitat, a canoeist under these proposals will pay nothing and potentially damage any habitat that anglers have worked hard to restore

Marek, yes we should all try to get along together and have a joint responsibility for maintaining our waterways.

However the proposals are that canoeists should have access to all UK waterways without any need to engage in habitat managment of any kind and with no onus on them whatsoever to show a duty of care for the waters that they use for their sport.

I have no problem with Canoeists being granted access to certain stretches of water, where their activities can be managed and the damage to habitat is minimal or non-existant. such a policy seems to work well on the river Wye for example at the moment, with canoeists being granted access to water between Symonds Yat and Monmouth.

However i feel that any such activities should be regulated, in the same manner that our sport is regulated and that total river access without consequence is a recipie for disaster, canoeists should be kept apart from areas that are enviromentally sensitive and should have set access and exit points over approved areas of the river, total river access will cause untold damage to our waterways
