stubby 175
one of my permissions has been on at me for a couple of months, asking me to ferret their field, even thogh they have rabbit proof fencing around their garden area, which Is in their field, the buggers still get in an eat their planted veg anyway, I asked them to cut a 3ft strip alongside the boundary hedge for the longnet to be positioned, which they did last week, myself and daughter "alix" turned up around 9am, the first warren got us the only two rabbits of the day, a 3/4 grown and a pregnant doe, one area we ferreted, was filled with nothing but baby rabbits, which the ferts failed to catch, and they just jumped through the longnet we carried on till noon, by which time it was way to hot to continue, so we called it a day on chatting to the owners, they reckon the rabbits have dug new warrens in the road/boundary hedge, which they want ferreted, if you look at the bottom picture, the hedge is from the left of the picture, upto the tree on the left, which can be seen just above the car so, anyone interested?, you'd need transport as this place is in the middle of nowhere, place called chishill, herts.. reckon maybe 2 to 3 people extra, so we can longnet the roadside and have 2 watchers and the same on the field side Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
waste of time doing that hedge unless you cut rides through it in which to place stop nets ... even then it would be very very difficult the rabbits will just run the whole of the inside of the hedge and double back past the ferrets .... you would be better waiting untill the winter when the cover dies back and they are forced to make a break for it ......... stubby 175
I had thought that too, and told the owner, of course they dont want areas cut through although the actually thickness at bottom of hedge is probably only 200mm and very dense, a zig zagged longnet on the field side, may stop the running the length, and I doubt many will bolt roadside, but you'd still need to gaurd that side, more for emerging ferts than rabbits, normally I would have told them Id come back in the latter part of year, but Ive ferreted this land for around 2yrs, its managed by "strutt & parker" a very big land management company, and through ferreting this, I was then given more permission that you could shake a stick at, so I like to show willing, even if its a poor day like today, the act of, "showing your face" goes a long way Quote Link to post
