novelty gundog.... a newfoundland??

Recommended Posts

i want to know if you guys think a newfoundland could be trained to be a shooitng companion

(i haven't got one .... yet!)

but the idea was ticking away in my head that they could be, because they are retrivers... so presumibly you could channel centurys of fetching people into fetching shot game?

add your opinions, Rob

because i would love to see a breed doing what it was bred to do, and not just prance round a ring for a rosette

I know nothing about gundogs...except the breeds in the group...so dont know if a newfi would work well as one..but as a groomer i very strongly advise Against clipping a newfi's coat......I know you dont have one yet...but if you were to ever get one.....

I have clipped a newfi before as thats what the owners were advised to do by a vet to sort out a skin complaint...but because they are a double coated breed that should not be clipped it isnt advisable....clipping them ruins there coat in the long run...it grows back thicker and fluffier then it should and is harder to manage.....if you did go ahead with it if you get one it certainly doesn't need to be done every week.....to get a decent finish on it you'd have to use a very short blade otherwise it tends to look patchy and it takes a while for it to grow back.....you could clip a strip on his belly leaving it hidden by his skirt so that when he lays down on a cold floor it will go straight to skin and cool him down...like i said i know youdont have one yet but if/when you do get one please think carefully before clipping it....

The breed origianted in Canada and was used as a working dog for a variety of tasks, bringing in fishing nets, pulling carts holding wood, food and later to deliver mail. The double coat was needed to protect them from the harsh water coldness, I've no doubt that they would make fantastic working dogs for a variety of tasks, as a gundog i'm unsure they would have the drive and determination to excel, or the athletesism and stamina to go the distance . . . . .particulary with todays breeding, aimed more at size and bulk than a well functioning athletic dog. There are lots of "Newfy" clubs in England that allow the breed to full fill it's working potential, retrieving "casualties" cast over board and towing boats to shore.

It's be worth it though to see the faces of your local shoot members when you rocked up with that on the end of the lead!

I doubt if 5% of those bred in the UK "prance around a ring" most are in soley companion/pet homes. However there is a very big growing community of working newfies....working in water.....like they were meant to do!!
