PROBLEMS WITH ROOKS

Recommended Posts

Some permision i,ve got rang me this morning and asked me if i could shoot some rooks with my airgun, the rooks are running havoc with the chickens taking 15 eggs this morning......Just wondering if theres other methods of either killing or catching the rooks as i think one shot from the airgun is going to send them on their way..........cheers..............

Trap them mate. I think the trap is called a ladder trap where you can catch good numbers of them. We used to use it up the shoot where i worked :D

Cheers pocus could you explain what it looks like??

Will Rooks go in a Larsen trap?

Wasting your time with a larsen for rooks, like has been said a ladder type trap or a large cage with big top funnel entry as well as ground level funnel will work best for rooks.

The first link to the trap on the pigeon watch website, i would say the ladder entry point is too wide, a flap of mesh about 8 to 12 inches, hanging along each side of the entrance should stop any from accidentally escaping. And like ststed on the link, allow the birds too feed from the trap with a section missing for a day or two, then close the trap.... large numbers can be caught.

We had rooks coming into a laying pen and taking eggs, we simply converted their entry/exit point in the roof of the pen into a one way only entrance, big numbers were caught, as once a few are in others will be drawn in also.

when i was yound and working on a large estate we used to have to go round the rookeries in may and shoot all the young flyers,

The rooks are coming from elsewhere flying to my ground, otherwise i would have tried the airgun when they were coming in to roost, can,t wait to see how that trap performs though......cheers............
