Long netting at night - best ever bag

I'm not quite sure which forum to post this in, so I guess lurchers is as good as anywhere. Now, i've only been out longnetting at night a handful of times, I dont know why but it just never really appealed to me - dog work has always been my thing. The most I've personally seen taken by one team in one night was 37 rabbits from 4 drops.

Reading some of the old books from the pre-myxy days it looks like people used to take big bags back then - G. Bedson writing as Grandad reported taking about 193 one night with one partner (in the 1930's) and Harold Wyman reported taking 176 or so in 1950 -just pre-myxy. Both were poaching and had obviously picked the most favourable spots they could find i.e. lots of rabbits and ideal ground for netting. We have far less rabbits most places now than they did back then when they made these bags.

My question then, is what is the biggest bag of rabbits you have ever know to be taken by one team of netters in one night in the UK. I'm not interested in fantasy bags taken by public house hunters but bags you have been involved in taking, have seen taken or have been told about by reliable honest people. To be a bit more specific -I'm not interested in bags taken by 6 or 8 blokes running multiple sets in different places at the same time. i'm interested in bags taken at night by one team of 2 or 3 blokes with or without use of a bont line and with or without use of dogs but definitely not using ferrets

Ive had a few 50"s but they were from several sets! Usually i get anything from 0 to 20 per night. I am sure if someone had ground that was alive with rabbits they could catch 100 plus on the right night!

Interesting post Nightwalker ;) Mind you,..the lurcher section, as you say, would appear to be 'the place' to place your query,..but in truth,.it isn't... ;) You are far better off at night without a dog...I've killed several thousand rabbits at night with Long Nets,..my average bag ,.frequently from a few drops was usually 60 or 70 rabbits ,.mind you,..I think this season will see a vast improvement on those scores. The rabbits are doing very well 'darn sarf' and we love to see them multiply and prosper :signthankspin::signthankspin: The big problem with night netting is that it is best to go out fairly late and allow the rabbits to get 'well out' when they are feeding. In fact,.later the better. However,.whilst waiting for the perfect night and ideal conditions one could so easily be out on the dazzler with a good killing dog. And considering that a sensible lurcher can manage 40 rabbits and still be up for more next night,..it is sometimes silly to wait for the netting night,..I do like my old nets,.but business is business...

Anyway,.all the best to all keen hunters,..kind regards,.ONLYTHECONY............ ;)

Thanks Phil

Yes, I guess that long netting has really been overtaken by night-shooting - where a team of 2 or 3 blokes really can make huge bags on a good night and by lamping with lurchers which is likely to be more consistent. I was just curious really. I guess a lot of people use long nets with ferrets in the day but hardly anyone uses them at night now and bags have reduced proportionaltely with the reduction in rabbits since the 1950s

Good thing about long nets at night is! You dont use lamps so you can poach like f**k! If you wanted to break the law obviously! Its lucky i have lots of permision, so i am perfectly legal!
