  1. Got a 13 month old border it's like a switch has just been turned on n he's in n out the bushes like a good un, caught his first rabbit the other day so pretty pleased. Really enjoying gettin out n about with him. Mind he's getting a larl bit scrappy with other males even though he's been well socialised do you think he'll steady when he gets a bit older? Looking forward to hearing more about your outings. All the beat
  2. Did you manage to get out with the pup? I'm not too far from Carlisle wanting to take my 12 month border ratting.
  3. Good luck with the interview mate, think calm and confident and sell yourself! Stretching the truth is ok as long as it's not too far lol
  4. Thanks. My friend with stables has said I can take the dog down there to see if there's anything doing is it best to go at night with a lamp? I have heard the ram story too but I would worry about him getting doofed and internal injuries - a goat was nearly the end of my uncles terrier!
  5. I went to Newton Rigg but doing animal management. We are talking 7 years ago so might have changed but I really enjoyed it. The lecturers are knowledgeable and the college owns plenty of good land too. From what I know talking to game keeping students you can keep your dogs and ferrets on campus, for any spare time you have. There's not much going on in the nearest town mind so if you enjoy partying on a weekend don't expect too much!
  6. I have always been brought up in the countryside but had conflicting opinions on hunting, my fathers side were farmers, my mothers side worked beagles and foxhounds but mam had always disagreed with it and questioned why a girl would be interested! one day at school we had to debate fox hunting and I was on the anti side, but same as you thought I thought I can't comment on something I know nothing about n went along to a fox hunt. Although I didn't see a kill I enjoyed the companionship and more than anything being out there and seeing dogs doing what they were bred for. I suppose really it's
  7. Good thread. Love hearing people talk about dogs they've owned and known back through the years, shows a good dogs never forgotten.
  8. Hello lads n lasses, Just looking for some tips really please. Just got my first border terrier he's 13 month old n had him since 10 weeks. Im not from a hunting background but love being in the countryside n would love to give the pup a job to do. We have been spending time out in the woods n fields just mooching n he's enjoying poking into different holes etc. I would love to take him ratting but don't have the foggiest about getting started? Also just wondering in regards to "stock breaking" have I left it too late to train him? He is on the lead where sheep are but has now got very inter
  9. Hi, I have just got myself my first border terrier - he's 13 month old now and we are slowly learning together. Neither of us have any hunting experience although Brian (the dog!) obviously has the instincts! Have come to the forum to learn from some good dog people and hopefully find people who enjoy ratting and don't mind a hardworking newbie coming along! Looking forward to getting involved in the forum.
