  1. You didn't read what I wrote very well did you. I am a keeper myself. I was there that night as a young pair of eyes to do the dirty work for him- nothing more, nothing less. I was also genuinely interested to see such a big litter as until I shot them, he wasn't sure how many there were or whether they were all the same lot. *************** I was always told the fox Cubs come up with the Bluebells and this year has been no different as I found my first litter this week. After getting the vixen first for a change, the dog soon followed and to save time, I cage trapped the Cubs using t
  2. It's not my rifle- it's the retired keepers .17hmr. In fact, they are the only 7 shots I've ever fired through a HMR. I've actually got photos of every fox I've shot, trapped, bolted and caught for the last few years- it's a quick way of recollecting them. In fact our genuine coffee table wedding album has a picture of me and my best man with the two foxes we bolted with terriers and shot that very morning lol. Anyway- like I said, this was an interesting thread with some interesting ecology info in it. It was only to that aim that I posted because folks were too ignorant of what I
  3. We could maybe and counter-maybe until the cows come home. I appreciate the distinction you are making is between sport and control but I personally believe in both. Would those Cubs have been better off dying on the M4 or starving to death over the winter as they struggled to find enough food or new territories? A dead certain humane kill with no sport involved is the right way to control wildlife. When their numbers are in check then that's when sport can give them a lifeline- a reason for being if you like. Until that balance point- there's room for both.
  4. No! Why would I want to eradicate something that gives me so much pleasure? Whether Lamping, driving, bolting, exempt hunting, snaring or cage trapping them, I always get a rush when you first set eyes on one. But that sized litter on that little shoot and indeed in that little valley was unsustainable. For the benefit of all the wildlife- killing that litter was the right thing to do. You'll be pleased to know that there are still foxes in the area- just not too many.
  5. What a great thread this is Blaise! Well done to you and all your fellow French hunters. I look forward to reading more exploits in the future.
  6. I posted it because people don't believe anything they haven't seen with their own eyes. I chose not to put it in my original post. I love terriers and terrier work. My mate did amateur terriers for ten years and I've had some epic days with him. I've got my first Russel now who's coming along nicely and as I say I respect the fox as much as the next guy. But you can't tell me any respecting hunt would have wanted that lot cutting around at opening meet. So whatever really. If you want me to take it down I have nothing to prove. If you want me to leave it up to illustrate the point t
  7. Lol! Nothing like talking ethics with terrier men Imagine how much food that lot were eating! It's bad enough what you pick up at a normal earth. I respect the fox enormously but they don't have predators so control is always justified in my eyes. Eradication is not!
  8. No offence intended- that's why I didn't originally just post the picture. Less than five minutes googling will find lots of literature about multiple vixens cubbing together. They never fail to surprise me.
  9. I was with a retired keeper friend on a small shoot he runs in his spare time (I'm a single handed keeper myself) and thought he was winding me up until I went to shoot them for him. We sat 60 yards away in his little Jimny and shot them all one by one over about 40 minutes. We ended up shooting about 6 adults from the area too so never did work out who's were who's
  10. Vixens will also share breeding earths. I shot seven Cubs from one earth and they were about a week apart size wise. All came out of the same hole.
  11. It works even better if you prop the door open with two sticks like a Larsen trap, it means it takes much less force to spring the door
