Hello I'm looking for some advice on bait to use for a crayfish trap,I heard fish is the best for obvious reasons, but I cant get hold of any fish heads,as the local fish monger sells them all to the chinese, and the supermarkets cant give them out,so,I heard cat food is second best, will a can of sardines work? or a can of any type of fish? Cheers. Trapper

Snowshoe snaring in the Northwest Territories
Trapper replied to mpalmer243's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Hi I dont have time to post on here as there is quite a bit to it ,but go on the internet and search it on google, there is loads and loads on it,there is a website called van dykes, they have step by step instructions,braintan.com is another one, thats using the animals brains to tan the hide, the north american native people used this method to tan their hides. When you get your furbearer, skin it out as soon as you can, dont waste any time ,and then jst freeze it till you have learnt how to tan, then defrost it and away you go! Trapper -
Hello Here's a couple of pictures,I have some more i just need to get them onto my computer ,i'll try asap.I didnt mention I only call in the day,the reason is ,when your on your own its alot easier ,you dont have to work a lamp, but the main reason is coyotes are very weary animals, and light spooks them very easily. This coyote i called in to 15-20 yards, using a rabbit/hare distress,i stopped him with a squeek when he was close enough and hit him square in his chest,he didnt go far. I was laid behind the bump in the background and was calling out all the area up to the hills in the backgro

Hello How many of you call into a shotgun? Whislt I was in Canada I called a few yotes in to the shotgun,to about 15 yards.I was shooting an old single barreled 12g which adds to the fun because you have to make sure you hit it right and you only get the one chance.I called a pack in to the shotgun which was good fun,I'm looking to call some foxes over here into the shotgun.I dont have a rifle over here,In Canada I was shooting a .243,and a friends .22 250 which is handy for reaching out to them when they are call shy but its definatly more of a buzz when you get them in real close, plus f

Snowshoe snaring in the Northwest Territories
Trapper replied to mpalmer243's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Hi MP I've put some pics on here of some of the furs i tanned myself,i learnt how to do it from a local taxidermist when i was over there, there are many ways to do it,but i learnt a simple way,it can be alot of work,i dont use chemicals which i like the idea of,and the results are good enough for me .touch wood i've had no hair slipping on any of them i have tanned,i think the key is to get it dried/salted asap,so the bacteria cant get to work. Here's a couple of pics,I have here,6 yotes,2 snowshoe's,1 muskrat and 2 rabbits. My next one is going to be a red fox, maybe i have left it too -

Hi Mpalmer I was over in Canada this winter and shot a few of the snowshoe hares, lovely fur,it just sheds like hell, but I still skinned and tanned a couple just for the white fur to look at. what do you plan on using the fur for? Have you snared any yotes this winter? When I had a go the ground is so hard for the anchors its not much fun trying to set them ! Trapper -
Hey I'd use anything up from no. 5's, if your on it and you get it in the right place you'll drop it,i'd avoid anything to big though. Trapper

Whatever works mate before I got into this trade I made things out of pallet wood, its very cheap if not free and pretty strong. I'm making a smaller version as we speak so that I can send it to the uk for less cost. i'll post pics when its glued etc. Theone- i would make you a bow back but I am not in the uk at the minute,I return in april so if your still looking for one then, then give me a shout and i'll have one sent to you. John Hubery-you've got it spot on .Thanks Coatesy900- nope ,definatly does not weigh a ton, that would be a little to heavy dont you think?! A

hello Its not soilid cherry so its not that heavy, its cherry ply .it may not even be used, as i'm not in the uk at the minute (canada) and ferrets are a hundred dollars or so a pop here and sold in pet shops, also you cant breed from them! if I can get it home without too much space in my suitcase then I will take it home ,if not, its time to make a small one for a jill or so. (watch this space) .This is just a bit of fun to make the days at work go faster! Ash

Hello I'm in the process of making a ferret box. this is how far I have got ,I dont know weather to have it split in half,or have one for the ferrets and a smaller section for equipment like locater and some nets. the section that will hold the ferrets is going to have a lid on .so there will be a main lid to open, then another to get at the ferrets.
