  1. As ive never flown one as a game hawk i dont really know, but one guy who i know that flies them at game wont fly anything less than 3/4 gyrSakers.Ive flown a 3/8thGyr/Saker male at Crows and he was crap but liked Pheasant, they do change in there personallity the more Gyr in them.As for them being the same, well just take a look at a pure Gerkin(male Gyr) price to a 7/8ths bird 3 to 4 times cheeper! just out of couriosity pal how much would a pure gyr female falcon cost Cheapest I know off would be a grey female at 3 - 3,500k. Well thats what my friend/mentor who I dog handle for
  2. Ordered a nice fresh new Falcon the other day,a PerexGyr/Saker female.Ordered from High Cayton Falcons(Andy Smith),top bloke Andy always makes you feel welcome and up for a bit of crack. These Hawks are fast gaining a reputation as superb persuit Falcons, not a lot breed them yet and most are snapped up as working Falcons.Really cant wait for July
  3. Forgive moi if I am wrong, but is'nt a 7/8th gyr/saker almost no different to a 100% pure gyrfalcon ? And why not less than that percentage ? 5. Hes fine mate we still getting out together and we share the flying of what hawks we get so they get flown more.We are getting a male Pere/Saker or Male Pere/GyrxSaker they are big birds from Andy flying at 1.9 to 1.10 hoping to do some hedge bashing and if possible corvids. We had a Gyr/Prairie last season but he wouldnt kill crows,he would kill anything else though lol.You should get out with us next season mate.
  6. How the hell are you Al lol,im off to Andy Smiths tomorrow to put a deposit on a 2010 falcon..Are you flying owt again?
  7. What!,THE BIGGEST PROBLEM with Falconry IS its just that easy to get into! There are no laws concerning ownership of birds, anyone can go out,buy a bird and try and train it,Harris Hawk in one hand "how to" book in the other.Thats why the general standard of falconry is poor in the uk.Sure there are some brilliant Falconers and im priveleged to know some of the best in the counrty, but for every one great Falconers there are twenty shite ones! too many blokes who have had one or two Harrises come on sites like this and dish out advice to other newbies.Ive flown hawks and falcons and still dont re

  10. Just an obsevation mate ,that perch in the aivery and i didnt call it a bow perch on purpose, isnt really good enough, its square and the ring will not run over the legnth of the perch because of the corners.Bow perches are, well bow shaped for that reason, the ring will foul on the corner and at the least trash your birds tail. The weathering looks a little narrow, the bird will catch its primaries on the wire when it bates or flaps.I hope you dont think im pulling it apart but get it right from the start and you will cut out a lot of mistakes people who are new to Falconry make
  11. If its a Harriis gravel is ok,falcons forget it,its a nightmare on wing tips and tail espescially with a batey bird.
  12. He is avery nice bird anyway.
  13. like i said before ,you were not asking anything but making an inflamitory statement, its like me going on another forum and saying "so do you think its ok for a row of fat blokes to shoot overfed pheasants pushed into the sky for fun?" and say im trying to clarify something, its not is it?this is a hunting forum so have respect for others sport and if genuinely interested ask in a less provocative manor.I will leave it at that...BTW i like your avatar, its a huge cock ahemm!
  14. There is not a big need to keep socialising with the bird during the moult, just leave it moult in its aivery. There are a lot of people who keep the contact up with Harrises during the summer but it isnt essential.
  15. If you dont want to be treat like an a rsehole then dont act like one,its no problem you asked a question, but you made a rather curt statement about it being ok to hunt protected birds just because its with a hawk! and that is precisely the type of post that our forums have had to put up with from Antis, so wind your holier than thou kneck in because if you are a gamekeeper "people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones"
  16. You are sounding more and more like an anti? if its legal then it can be done,if it isnt it cant, simple!.Stay within the law and happy Falconry!
  17. It is a quarry licence which you can apply for to take certain traditionaly hunted species (ie larks/pipits with a merlin, blackbirds with a spar, certain gulls for pest control ect). They will grant a licence for a specified number of birds to be taken within the season, normally with a hawk/falcon traditionally flown at them,so they wouldnt probably grant you a licence to take blackbirds with a harris hawk!
  18. Theres a few who swear by high percentage Gyr/Sakers ie 7/8ths no less than that though, they have great success on pheasant nwith them.
  19. its just not nice seeing birds f***ed up by people who havnt a clue, then selling them on to the next numpty to play with for a few weeks until they realise that beyond a harris they couldnt hack it as a falconer. Its in such a state Falconry in the UK because of the lack of legislation stopping anyone buying a hawk without first being competent to do so.
  20. Well after less than 10minutes out today Max had another kill at 1.6,i had cut him hard and he looked a little lethargic when he took to the air, landing imedietly in a small tree. After we had walked past him i called him and he took off instantly only to vere almost at a right angle and dissapear out of sight behind a hedge. We couldnt see him but could faintly hear bells, anyway we followed our ears(or Micks) and found him tucked in the side of a fence 150 yds away on his prize.
  21. he was a complete twat yesterday and for that reason he wasnt flown today and hopefully fly better on a very empty stomach tomorrow.
  22. It has taken near enough 4 days for Max's weight to come down to a acceptable level ( 1.6 5/8ths from 1.9 1/2!!!) He has been just completely unmanagable for this time,at one point hanging from the glove like he was fresh from the chamber!.Today he was mad as stink in the morning, but by 4.45 he had calmed down( agood soaking helped) he still baited away until he saw the chick wing then he was my friend again.Took him up on one of my Dairy farms and cast him off,he ptched straight away onto the cattleshed,i called him in and he came instantly,he passed the lure 15 times and took his feed,he was
  23. Myself and Mick went out to fly Max today,he was bang on weight and had a 24 hr hunger,so i thought "a good flying sesion".Well what came about was a different story.I cast Max off to stoop him,and he just climbed(which on weight and in windy conditions was unusual). He was about 1/2 mile away when he went and scattered Gulls on the neighbouring Golf course and went out of sight.Out came the telem and we tracked him for about 3 miles on foot until we came to some allotments (i had seriously forgot they were there) i had a signal fro inside the allotment perimiter, then nothing.I was panicking by
  24. Sorry to hear about the dog Terence, hope it makes a full recovery.I dont understand why more people dont fly Prairie hybrids(there again ive only flew one) for me the agressivness is an attraction and not a detraction,i like a bird with fire! All the best Graham p.s im glad we dont have quail over in my kneck of the woods as im sure he would crawl over hot coals to get em too
  25. He is doing ok but still needs some work,he is a naturally lazy bird because he has been used on landfill so is used to sitting for long periods.Im trying my damdest to get him out of the habbit and he is comming along in that respect, also he has never really been stooped to a lure, another thing we are working on lol so getting him fit is a ball ache.I mix his fitnees regime up with long luring, stooping and dragged lure work its a slow but progressive regime which in the long run will work.He self hunts quite a lot and has had several kills this season already from a waiting on position and he
