  1. Get yourself between the rabbit and the set and then with the beam on walk straight toward the rabbit, if it claps down don't stop just keep walking steadily towards it with the beam on the whole time. If you get right up to it just give it a nudge with your foot and KEEP THE DOG ON THE SLIP, do not slip it; let the dog see what it's missed. If the rabbit lifts before you get to it, again keep the dog on the slip and just track the rabbit back to the set with the beam. The reason for not slipping no matter how easy a kill it would be is to let the dog appreciate what is down the beam. Kicking the rabbit up then slipping it (or even getting the dog to take it in the seat) will only encourage the dog to let you do the donkey work. It'll not take long before the dog associates the beam with these escaping rabbits and it'll start belting down the beam. Getting between the rabbit and the set gives you the best chance of the rabbit running toward/past you and the dog seeing the rabbit at close quarters. I'll stress though that you will need to miss a couple of rabbits on purpose before the dog gets the idea... what's a couple of missed bunnies compared to years of your dog running straight down the beam as soon as it is slipped!

  2. I bought my Axsor when they very first came out and despite it going back to Webley twice they couldn't fix the fact that it couldn't hold the charge (either when left unused or when fully charged and shooting straight away). Third time it went back I told them if they didn't fix it I'd be after a full refund (not fit for purpose), I also demanded that due to the hassle I'd like them to replace it with the new carbine version, they did loads of complaining but eventually gave me the carbine however used my walnut stock. Since then it's been a fabulous rifle! ;)

  3. New to this forum but I've been around long enough! ;)

I've not had long to mooch around on here so I'm not sure if I'll recognise many members by their user names, though I'm sure I'll recognise one or two people in time.

About me; I've been into dogs, ferrets and guns for near on 35 years since my Dad had me out shooting as a nipper and my uncle had me out with his ferrets and terriers. I'm mainly into rabbiting but I do a bit of pest control by shooting pigeons, crows etc with rifle or shotgun. I've been associated with a couple of local Lurcher/Longdog clubs and I've ran a few Obedience tests at various Country Shows as well as judged Lurchers in the NE/NW and Southern Scotland. The last of my ferrets pegged it a year or so ago and they've not been replaced as yet, as did my oldest Lurcher (a Dave Pike, line bred dog), I've still got a 12 year old 'pup' that is still keen on the lamp but at last has gained the sense that anything faster than a rabbit isn't worth the hassle. :D I've kept myself to myself the last 10 years or so and had little to do with the local scene preferring to get on and do my own thing with my sport.

I'll be straight and admit that part of the reason for registering rather than browsing every now and again, is that I'm likely to be after a Lurcher pup soon and though I can call on a few local lads to help me track down a decent enough animal, I'm 'probably' looking to track down an unusual Kelpie/Heeler/Cattle Dog x Greyhound. However more of that when I've had a bit of a Mooch.

    Cheers.

    Jack
