  1. I had a few of those old mentors myself mate, they really did get my young brain excited and every word and every lesson was just the most interesting stuff to me. One old guy was an expert taxidermist, and trapper, old time poacher and a real gent. Fond memories. All the best Tusker
  2. I could only imagine the stealthy brainy sort of mutt that would be mate. What sort of height? Cheers Tusker
  3. Im far from the flat fens of Englandshire mate, Ive carried home too many greyhound based lurchers off these rocky hills. They are too fragile for me. Plus I dont need the speed that is needed on the low ground. To find and flush game up here a dog needs a bit of size, a good nose, a solid conformation, a good jacket is desirable and a tough robust body and feet that can run over these harsh rocky slopes. The game I hunt varies but mountain hare and boar are both common. If someone bred deerhound/pointer or perhaps another gundog breed, that should suit my needs, I wouldnt say no to a dee

  5. Any good? Ive heard of only the 1 litter in UK, mixed reports
  6. Would be great to hear from anyone keeping deerhound cross... with little or no greyhound! All the best Tusker
  7. Honestly, these are great looking dogs guy's. they look like like the tool for a bit of game and vermin. Seems the coats are the only drawbacks with this type, though I bet a touch of collie or wheaten blood would rectify that. Super looking dogs, each one of them. All the best Tusker
  8. Tusker.... It's the closed season for that game here at the moment. Not that we would hunt anyway, as the heat is too hard on the dogs and there is too much risk of snakebite. We are legally restricted to three breeds of hounds, which must be assessed as true to type and registered with te authorities. It's a pain in the neck, and most unreasonable, but we came within a whisker of losing the ability to hunt with hounds completely. The legal breeds are Beagle, Bloodhound and Harrier. No crosses. The Harriers have only become legal this year, so the number of blokes hunting with th
  9. Yes EBT are the more common breed in the established pig dog lines in Aus. Lugging a pig dont need too much gameness, or you end up with a battle that a dog wont win, Saying that, many pure pit bulls make decent luggers if entered young enough to learn to respect for the pigs. The dog I speak of is a UK bull grey, and probably the best individual pest control dog I've seen that works all from rats to boar. Ive seen us walk bleak moors for hours before the dog hits an old scent and bee lines it into the distance, only to bump his fox, course it, and kill it. For nose work, Ive never seen a lurc
  10. And im sure you will have opened a few folks eyes. Surely all traditional lurchers and a great many bull cross will do all that and more aswell? And its also apparent that some folk seem to believe that bull crosses are purely fox catchers, not the case in my experience, to call them 1 trick ponies is pure breed blindness.
  11. I really look forward to adding this blood into my tracking dogs bunnys. I cant speak to highly of said dog. Ive hunted alongside most aussie pig dogs from dogo's to mastiffs to bull arab's, and honestly this dog is at the top of the tree, and can use brain as well as brawn when needed, which is essential for boar work. Far from a 1 trick pony. Its not that its a bull grey, I see the dog as an individual, and hope to add his qualities, as well as his ancestors. He is not only a great worker, but a great softie around dogs and stock too. lovely beasty indeed.
  12. All depends what you are looking for in a dog brains or brawn, Trust me OLdRed, this dog was a mastermind. But hell he was stubborn jeez, too much dog for me, all drive, no reverse...hes retired now and not owned by me. Like I say Ive seen most sorts over the years, and some very handy stuff too, both here and in Australia , but this bull grey was an exceptional dog and has been tested on everything, I mean everything. I hope I am still allowed to use him over my best tracking bitch! All the best Tusker
  13. They called CULLS in these parts mate. No matter what breeding is behind them. All the best Tusker Jeez theres some folk happy to feed and work CULLS its crazy.
  14. Seen most every dam cur take fox, but by far the best Ive personally seen was a line bred bull cross, head and shoulders above the rest. For all aspects of fox hunting, and killing day and night.
  15. Can I ask a few questions about the hounds that you employ for the deer? Are one or two of them pure Bloodhound? How do you find them for the job compared to other types? Would enjoy more stories of the deer hunting, and the hounds! All the best Tusker
  16. Ya, I dont believe there are many that would be real hard catch dogs but overall they can be real rough bay dogs. Some will catch OK but not like a good bulldog. My point exactly. Of those Ive hunted with, which aint a lot, but Ive got to know around 15 of them, working feral pigs, I enjoyed their style, and some of the crosses were of the best allround pig dogs Ive seen. They do cross well into a stag or pig dog line. Go on, put up a pic of your cat bulldog. Have you hunted with many pures Dan?
  17. Some nice pics and opinions gents, but try keep arguments to private message ey? I'v been having some good days lately, the little beagle and spaniel crosses are flying on the boar now, just the job to get them out of the young spruce thickets here. Pure hounds are not much cop for me, as I dont have masses of land, and we tend to do smallish maneuvers compared to boar drives on the continent. Yeah some of mine will hunt on, a fair way at times, I can live with keenness! But Im not going looking for them in the next county! Im just gonna keep on pushing forward, and putting my best
  18. @ b p r Good luck with the pup dogs&natives Whats the rest of you working as tracking dogs/hounds
  19. Ive just never seen one work, and the wirehaired pointer ticks all of my boxes as far as hunting/tracking as well as being biddable but with great hunting desire, would you say the wire visla has advantages over the pointer.
  20. Nice, I do like those little beasts a lot, they seem a big dog in a small package.
  21. alright mate, good luck with the pups. Interesting mix ,be a bit of a height variance in litter would of thought. There's a old pet collie x jr terrier round our way, about knee height, black n white has the terrier head, solid looking dog. to be honest mate, i think 2 are gonna be collies an 3 terrier types, 2 are merle an quite snipey in face, a blue an a red merle, an the other 3 are a black n tan, a red grizzle an a black, an they are all ringers for lakie pups, time wil tell, ill get to watch whole litter grow, so here's hoping Ive kept litters in the past I love it, you can h
