Just bought another couple of 25 yd longnets to add to my collection for daytime ferreting. The only problem is I bought the by mail order and I forgot to ask what colour they were. They arrived this week and are a very light colour green, my others are all dark green or brown. I think they will stand out and put rabbits off from bolting in to them, especially in the hedgerows. They are 6z twisted nylon, has anyone tried dying or colouring nylon long nets. Does anything worK? All the best AF

I got some alloy pegs like that from the Ferret Box Company from York last year. Dont know if they still sell them. They advertise in the CMW. All the best AF

I had similar problems when I first got a Mk3. I have punched some extra holes in the collars in between the existing ones and find that I can get a lot better fit to the ferrets. I have had one come off since I have done this. All the best AF

Cheers for that Compo, I will get some netting and give it a try. All the best AF

Ta for the reply Compo, I was thinking of some 12 yard stop nets perhaps on 3 poles. I suppose if they were too long I could just zig-zag them like you suggest with the long nets? All the best AF

Thanks for the replies Gents. I appreciate any advice. I realise that different situations call for different methods and I try to be adaptable. I have added snares, spring traps, cage traps and a rifle to my rabbit control armoury over the last couple of years. Also recently made a drop net for a particular problem location. I first started ferreting about 25 years ago and for a long time never used anything but purse nets (mostly because I did not know any better). I have been using long nets for ferreting at some locations for a couple of years now. Stop nets will be yet another string

Thanks for the reply Compo, good to hear from someone who has actualy used this method. I like the idea of zig-zaging the long nets as well. I had heard talk about putting a plastic sack or something through the hedge in the middle of the netted area to try to encourage any bolting rabbits to move outwards, apparently the idea is that they then run further out parallel to the hedge (and hopefully in to your net) rather than going back down a hole. Anyone tried this? All the best AF

I rescued one from a similar situation by taking it apart, washing it with distilled water to get any detergent etc out and then thoroughly drying before putting the case etc back on. Worked fine after that. All the best AF

A lot of my permission involves rabbiting along hedge rows (usually hawthorne and blackthorne) and I am getting tired of spending as long digging thorns out of my hands and knees as I am actually ferreting with purse nets. I have tried running long nets parallel to the hedges but the rabbits just hole hop along the hedge. Most hedges are quite thick and have wire sheep netting running down them so I can not put a long net through them. I am thinking of buying some stop nets, possibly 4, so I can put 2 either side of the hedge at each end of the bury at 90 degrees to the hedge. Has any

I think it is a fair infestation and there are lots more fields to have a go at after this one if we get the time. The crop is wheat so we wont be able to chain harrow it, most of the time spent in the field is kicking over mole hills rather than setting traps. I had a Fred Astair moment yesterday kicking one way and then the other!! We can only get the time to tackle things on a weekend so we have been going and putting a few traps in before or after our rabbiting trips. The thing is as you say a lot of time is spent clearing up the new ones that have moved in the areas we have already do

A farmer on one of our rabbiting permissions asked me and my ferreting mate if we would have a go at some moles on his property. He bought us the traps so we have been putting a few out. We put 50 traps out yesterday in one of the fields we have been trying to clear. Picked them up this morning and had got 16 moles (including one double). What is this like compared to your catching average? Its a 15 acre field and we have had 45 moles out of it so far. About 4 acres left to do on this field. We put some out in the same field a couple of weeks ago and got a bank vole in one of the traps, wha

Wanted a Topex applicator set for Talunex. Full set required (applicator, probe and case) in good condition. Cash waiting. PM please if you can help. All the best AF

WWW.theflatpack.co.uk Very well made British traps at very competetive prices. Just had 40 from them and when you look at the cheap imports there is no comparison. These traps are even already partly tuned so little need to tweak them much. All the best AF

Just took this pic. Not your traditional conga but......... All the best AF

I use stuff called 'Ferretone' I think its the same sort of stuff but in a liquid form. It must be like Crack Coccaine for ferrets because mine are nuts for the stuff. I use it as a treat and to keep their attention when clipping nails or putting on collars. When they are in the ferret court I put a drop on the back of each of the ferrets and then watch them all doing the conga licking it off each others back. I tried it whilst out rabbiting to get ferrets to return but it worked a bit too well. They soon got the idea that if they came up they might get some and so were not staying in the hol

Good review Stubby. I changed from a Mk1 a couple of years ago and once I got used to the slightly different way of using it I think the Mk3 is a great bit of kit. I have been there with some of the points you raise especialy not putting the box with the other ferrets in far enough away lol. The collars are a bit more fiddly for me on the Mk3s and I have had 2 occasions when they have come off. Last time I found the collar and put it in my pocket. Some time later I spent several fraustrating minutes trying to find a ferret that had been out for a while. The Ferret finder was showin

Dispatching Squrrels
Axholme Ferreter replied to Axholme Ferreter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Thanks for some of the advice. The 'Bag and Bash' method seems logical and humane and the idea of using combs to move the squirrel before shooting with a suitable air weapon also seems a good idea. Not sure about shooting the trap with a shotgun, seems a bit risky and overkill to me (especialy for the trap) but it would almost certainly kill the squirrel humanely. As for putting a ferret in the trap !!! I will pass on the relevant information thanks. All the best AF -
I'm strictly a rabbiter myself but someone was asking me the other day how they should humanely dispatch cage caught Grey Squirrels. He said that every time he went near the cage the caught squirrels started doing a 'wall of death' routine round the cage and did not stay still enough for him to shoot them with an air rifle. He said that he had heard of people just dropping the cages in a water butt and drowning them but I dont think that this sounds right. I thought of tipping the squirrel out in to a sack and moving it up to a corner before giving it a crack on the head with a priest, is

Found this chap in a trap yesterday. Perhaps he has been the cause of my problems? -

Thanks Fenbo, Yes I am setting them with the thumb loop to the side wall of the tunnel. 'Theoretically' the rabbits should be walking over the trap and it should be catching them either side. Perhaps I have just been unlucky so far. Does anyone else get many traps sprung empty?? -

Thanks for the reply. The holes I set the traps in were well used and well established. I dont think it was digging nearby that set them off though I will pay a bit more attention next time with this in mind. I am ony using 5 traps at the moment the others have still not arrived Intially set them on the most likely looking holes in a couple of burys and they have been there a couple of days. I think I will try stopping up the holes with no traps in them and see what happens. All the best AF
