  1. not being funny but this was an honest post. I dont see why people feel the need to give advice to someone to get a 'useless' as you put it dog. As I don't personally hunt foxes with terriers this doesn't mean that I want a lapdog. I asked for advice on what was a good bushing TERRIER not spaniel as I want to do a bit of ratting and also rabbiting with the terrier as I do with my current one. And as for 'Proper terrier lads' it doesnt make you proper just because you hunt foxes CURRENTLY but if you read my original post it said i wanted to move onto bigger stuff but my terrier was a late st
  2. Nice dog that, I'll have to get some pics of my lot up just waiting for my laptop to come back so I can get internet up and running at home (currently at work and can't upload on these comps) I don't mind him being daft to be honest, suppose it's all about him being a pup. just wish he wouldn't be so nasty! He is much better off the lead, though I am a bit cautious and tend to put him on the lead knowing what he's like, I don't want a vet bill for someone elses dog - he's ok with some but worse when they come bounding over to him maybe it's a defence thing and he feels threatened
  3. I think the only reason I was put off by getting another JRT is that there are so many variations, we dropped on with ours, but she's a stocky well proportioned one, there's possibly some bull in her somewhere down the line as shes got a square chunky head and very well muscled though we're not 100% sure on her breeding, I'll post a pic up as soon as poss but only have internet at work at the mo, I'm really not keen on the long bodied stumpy legged things that seem common today, everybody thinks she's not a JRT when they see her because they're used to seeing the short bent legged ones and str
  4. Thanks for that marshman, I never actually realised they were so different as terriers, glad I've been told will think of something else, makes it half the battle I suppose getting something that's actually bred for the job!
  5. I'm more after an allrounder though, something that's useful for bushing but also wanting to do a bit of digging, thought smaller type patterdale not the big stocky ones you see alot of.
  6. haha he's just started cocking his leg already in last few weeks, nearly fell over first few times! Really hope he calms down soon, though he is working well so I suppose I should be grateful for that, he's much better when working than when we're just exercising, suppose the collie in him makes him intelligent and gets bored easily he's got high prey drive but is constantly wanting to chase something, he often gets fed up of me ignoring him bringing sticks to throw and fetches me half a tree and growls at it when he can't carry it!!
  7. Thinking of getting a terrier pup to add to my team, currently got a 2 yr old Jack Russell bitch, ok bushing dog and excellent ratter, very keen on killing things, though she's not that hard (not too keen on working cover etc.) took us about a year for her to even look in a rabbit hole, we got her at 6 months and to be fair she hadn't had the best start in life and was very nervy, she's now building her confidence and is getting better but could really do with something a bit harder to show her the ropes and also give her a hand really as now thinking of moving on to bigger things what are y
  8. Mine's 9 months and can be a bit of a handful. She isn't aggressive towards other dogs, quite the opposite in fact, she get so over excited and properly bounds all over them, and does the same with people. It's my fault cos I generally take her for walks in the middle of nowhere rather than busy parks etc. She's proper obedient when there's no one around, and if there's a dog or person fairly nearby she won't go to them if I tell her not to, but if they are close (within 10m or so) she's off. She's starting to show signs of calming down a bit now though thank god. A couple of weeks ago th
  9. Yeah, he lets me pick up the kill, though isn't retreiving to hand yet but I think that's partly because everytime he catches my terrier tries to pinch it so he spends more time avoiding her he shows no agression towards people at all unless he's guarding the car/garden and someone put's their fingers in when told not to as has happened!
  10. I think this could be a big part of it, he's quite insecure and maybe I've been too soft and let him get away with far too much!

  12. I'll be going, been for the last 4 years ish. Lurcher events quite good, simulated coursing, racing etc. and showing. Always something there for everyone and has a good turnout, even when the weather hasn't been great. I'll be there Sunday for definite and possibly Fri/Sat as it's quite local to me only half hour away. Worth a trip anyway
  13. Will take some tonight when I get home, really pleased with them
  14. Mines coming up to 12 months soon and he just seems really daft compared to others I've seen, he's also very protective and shows signs of agression towards other dogs, particularly dogs rather than bitches which I find unusual as I've never seen this temperament in a lurcher before. He's starting to calm down when he works but is very, very head strong, it all seemed to be going well with the training now he takes the p*ss a bit sometimes, is it just more time he needs? I'm thinking is he just getting cocky now that he's had a few rats and rabbits? Has anyone else experienced this, he's my
  15. Can't believe it this morning, went to car boot got brand new double terrier box and brand new double ferret box for £30!! really well made bloke had made them for somebody who never collected them and was sick of seeing them!! Oh and terrier couples slip lead for £1 lol
  16. They are really cracking down in Yorkshire now I've heard of quite a few people, one caught red handed by farmer and reported to police
  17. Yes, just got some new permission, about 70 acres in all, and they have a REAL problem with rabbits, can't go on with dog which I'm a bit disappointed about but never mind, plenty of work to get the ferrets going. Looks like I'm going to need another freezer!! Will probably be going at the weekend so will let you know how I get on!
  18. This doesn't surprise me at all, I live in West yorks, we always, always walk the fields, but we see the huge damage of tire tracks all over the fields around where I live, and those tw*ts spoil it for the rest of us as the farmers just see everyone as the same
  19. ah i see what you mean, sorry not the quickest of people me lol
  20. hi all, I'm looking for a hob ferret kit, don't mind waiting a few months but would like to just know I have a good one on order from working lines, Yorkshire. PM me if you should have some ready in the next month or so. Thanks. Prefer Wakefield, West Yorks sort of area but can travel. Not fussed about colour or anything. Ferret will be worked but looked after as part of the family.
  21. I am showing in lurcher classes though, so I wanted to know what is a smooth lurcher, not greyhound or whippet.
  22. Hi I'd never put my ferrets to rats, use smoker and terriers. I was ratting on Saturday, smoked out the does and dug out 4 nests all full of day old babies, 10 - 12 in each nest, not even got their eyes open yet, the rats bite the dog if they dont kill them quickly so you can imagine what they'd do to the ferret. I also caught one in the live trap a couple of years ago, put the end of the air rifle in to shoot it and it bit the end! They are nasty sh*tes when cornered or protecting young.
  23. Can't see why not really, it's their natural instinct, one of mine was from working stock, the other was a pet and both proving to be good workers - pet one took a bit more getting down the holes to start with he just kept turning around but just had to keep putting him back in and he soon learnt.
