  1. im the same as already stated, no end for me. i only have a couple of places that are between me and a couple of mates but we have to work them all year to keep the numbers down and the land owner happy. wont be going out of my way to kill doe`s with belly's full of young by any means though. just enough to keep them happy but not to much to make sure we still have a few to do next year!

no point wiping them out just for the sake of it.

i,m lucky enought that the farmers more bothered about other stuff :whistling: rather then rabbits so i can as i please all year round

your lucky you have somewere you can help your self to mate. got a call yesterday of the estate guy told me not to call he would contact me when ready. sounded pissed about something, so theres my main bit up in smoke! till i hear whats wrong (someone maybe upset him). had to ferret a garden today! good job its wick lol only tiny but we managed 25 bunnys for the guy so he was please about that as his lawn is in a right mess.

the other 2 places which are garys (lurch) there naff all left and we havent taken manny to start with. have to start nocking on doors again me thinks!.

that only leaves out first permission we got and im having to leave that alone as we caned it all year as they guy wanted them shifting asap. whats left needs to breed so we wont be taking manny more from there till the number rise.

  3. no worries mate, just a certain place we have is ferret only and when the guy says ferret that hedge we do it no matter what time of year it is.

i just do as im asked to keep them happy. snares are no go, drop boxes may be an option but no one can go to check them as often as they should. shot guns are a no, lamping the rabbits are really shy and dive straight back into cover.

How about air rifle and night vision mate ( best way for lamp shy bunnies), you must dig your ferrets out constantly in the summer when the warrens are full of young.

I know you gotta keep land owners happy to keep permision but that must be hard work.

Have you ferreted the permission constantly for a couple of years? If so how do find the population of rabbits after a couple of years?

Thats not a dig mate just interested if they re-colonise quickly if your constantly taking them as we rest our permission out of season

to be honest mate this is the first year and i know we wont be stopping. they have to be wiped out best we can but i know for a fact it will never happen. ide say there are alot more warrens we carnt get to then the ones we can.

i have air rifle and night vision mate and ive used it before and we will be trying it there in the future. we just get asked to use ferrets so we do.

there is a huge amount of rough on the estate for the pheasants and alot of huge holly bushes which i try my best to avoid when ferreting. its hard enough to ferret and dig a hedge row thats died off threw the winter but big hollys bushes no thanks.

when all the growth comes back we will be doing what we can but not the the extent we do threw the winter when we can get to the more over grown sets.

  5. had a few pregnant does last week, just say starting to show.

but my season is all year round, the farmer wouldent be happy if i stopped to let them breed! he would only get someone else into do it.

You got to be desperate or dumb to use ferreting as a means of pest control over the summer.

desperate to keep permission, i do the job i keep it. end of.

  6. it would only really help if the ferret left the set and moved away say along a hedge row were its hard to see.

you could hear it and retrive it.

the bell would more then likely fill with mud and dirt and not work with 5 mins of the ferret going to ground so be left useless anyway.

nothing comes close to ferret finder, nothing. it really is a must have piece of equipment when you work your ferrets.

not only dose it help find your ferret so you dont loose it but you can remove dead rabbits which youde never know were even there without it.

ppl who dont use one are liveing on borrowed time.

there are ppl who dont use them and havent for years with no problems. but i wouldent ever go without one.

  7. she more then likely killed then moved on. if you kept digging i would of expected to find a dead bunny.

my guy kills instantly now, if theres no bolt in 5 mins i get the box out, if he dont move for 2 mins i dig. 4 out of 5 times theres a dead bunny. i had 3 holes dug at around 3 or 4ft apart the other day and removed a rabbit at each. well actually 2 rabbits at the first hole. he just went along the tunnel killing each one he came to. we got 23 rabbits but we only had 6 proper bolters all day. the rest were digs and removed from the hole as the ferret tryed to drag them back down.

once a ferret gets the nack of how to kill it only takes a few seconds once its at the right end of the body!

i swear theres bunnys down the holes we dont know about which are killed by the ferret but he moves on so quick youde never know.

  8. just got back in.

im alittle depressed at the moment lol, i actually caught more then my dog did!

how did you manage that?

put the lamp on and the stupid fecker run at me so i stook my foot out and kicked it lol.

dog had around 8 to 10 slips and 4 or 5 were what ide call very very easy slips, even had to just about kick 2 up as they were clapped that tight.

really upset with the dog as he either runs over sitters, falls over when they turn or wont run upto a rabbit till it actually moves. half the time he seemed to run with his eyes closed.

have a dodge up my permision 1 night jenky ,let him watch my dog for a bit mate ,just sent you a message about doing abit ferreting their this weekend

    no worries mate,

dont get me wrong he tries his heart out and gives it 120% when he is chasing, sometimes to much.

the dog is about 17 months and had a few bunnys in the day.

  10. will be buying around 60 nets in the next couple of weeks.

at the moment i have a bag i bought from a lad who gave up and theres a massive mixture of different nets. some i love to use and some i hate. no idea what most of them are.

im looking at getting the 10oz nylon because i need a few and i seen longnetter selling them for £1 each which is handy when your after 60 on a budget.

any one got a couple of pictures to show the difference between the 10oz, 12oz nylon and the spun polly ones?

when you look on websites most of the pictures are the same one used over and over for most of the different nets and without being able to actually go and have alook its hard to see which are the ones im actually wanting to buy.

    thanks.

  11. Contact the stickmaking classes, they will pay more than your asking there,- i will forward some numbers if you need.

sounds good mate please let me know.

rocky, ide love another walk out but sadly i havent got anywhere to take you. the couple of places ive manged to sort myself wont allow me to take anyone else and defo no dogs. ive had to purchase a shock collar for my guy for an estate ive been getting as there are deer and pheasant everywhere and the guy wasn't gunner let me take the dog until i can prove i can control him enough to keep away from them, the collar helped sway things.

will give you a shout if i ever find somewhere abit less strict lol

  12. alrite jenky mate you,ve been busy ,did you get from work

hello mate, yer mate had a good 2 weeks on big old tups. nightmare to dress and not manny have decent horns but if i can get something out of it then alls good cause im skint!

dont normally see this manny as the other lads grab em as well for ppl but ive managed to get there first this time. it really is hard to get good horns like these as farmers either chop the ends off or chop chunks out of them as they grow to close to the rams eye. or they drill bloody great big holes threw them to tie them up. 3 or 4 of these horns have very small holes drilled threw the tip but there still good horns, i left quite a few as they werent anygood for stick making. i used to collect them for my dad and my partners granddad so i know which ones are good and which ones arnt.

as for offers, i want £10 each for them as they go for more on ebay for decent ones like these, but because ive managed to get my hands on these quite quickly i thought ide just sell em cheaper all in one go. im after £100 towards a new mk3 ferret finder but if they need posting that would be extra.

  13. i havent had, or seen alot of lurchers work but of what i have seen ide say my wheaton x has an extremely high pray drive. far more then the gray x i had manny years ago.

but when he is not out in the field he is the most gentle dog ive ever had. eats very slowly, very calm, never pulls on the lead and very quiet.

  14. only had my lad a couple of months he is around 16 months. had a couple of dropped ones, a couple that have slipped the net while ferreting and picked up an injured one yesterday. had a few runs tonight on the lamp but dident connect and had a couple of day runs which have been put up but also not connected.

the ones he has had his retrieval is getting alot better each time.
