Well iv had countless doubles the past 2 months an most of them come from the connector runs 👍

i get most doubles from fence lines with putanges. we all have different styles of trapping, as long as we are happy in our approach and catch rate everyones a winner.

I use hand held pin pointer when use purtangs on big golf courses helps find traps as can't put marker out sometimes you put 3 or 4 in same cut out and forget there's more then 2 so pin pointer finds trap 👍

what is the pin pointer you talk of mate, i was going to get a old metal detector folk lost traps but i have a pacemaker in and it would probably effect it.

  3. will be a mole in the other trap, will have dragged it up the tube, if you dont have a means of locating it follow the tube by pushing a stick up, you will have to open a few bits up probably.  If the ground is really stoney you could put a bit of twine on and peg in outside the hole, only drawback with that is the trap could move slightly when the mole touches the trigger, not ideal.

Well done Felleh,...if canny guys like yourself didn't adjust things and introduce new innovations,. .the trapping world would simple stay in the dark ages...

    Many thanks...🙏

Thank you Phil, that means a awful lot to me coming from a man with a wealth of knowledge in all things to do with the countryside.

  5. when i clean the tube out with the spoon i wiggle the spoon side to side, that tells me how big the tube is, i then use the trap fitted with the appropriate trigger that is the best fit for the tube. A putange with a standard trigger set in a big tube is like a trap in no mans land, the mole could go up the side of the trap, hit the post etc, therefore missing the trigger so no catch. If the trap is filling the tube it has more chance of catching. I now use Putanges almost all the time, with standard triggers i would not use them in big tubes for the reasons i pointed out. These triggers make the Putange into a much more versatile trap, i use them in any situation.

  6. Here is a few pics, i dont personally use the small trigger which is same as a standard trigger narrow way on. The 3 on theses pics are (yellow) same as standard trigger big way on, (blue/white) 3mm bigger, (red) biggest trigger 6mm bigger than yellow. I use the 2 biggest triggers 99% of the time. As you can see when the trigger is loaded in the trap they are narrower at the bottom than the top, that way when they tip back they automatically want to throw of the trap unlike a standard trigger with 90 degree corners that can tip back wedging the jaws open and the trap not firing. Having different sized triggers enables me to set the trap with the jaws right up to the tube wall thus making it more likely that the mole will hit the trigger. In a lot of tubes the standard triggers are to small.

  7. I have 2 quads, a 34yrs old honda 300trx big red, permanent 4x4, it is a very reliable quad, will go just about anywhere. Can be hard on your body being permanent 4dw. I also have a 450cc cf moto, it has power steering and 2 and 4wd and diff lock.  They are good quads for the money but on the hills i feel much safer on the honda, the new quads are a lot higher and feel less stable to me. You should be able to pick up a fairly new cf moto for 2.5k, hondas are a lot dearer. Depends what you want to do with it. The cf moto is automatic the big red is foot change.

Many thanks for that info do you have sizes that I could follow for him , thanks

yes, give more your address and i will gift you a few to try and copy if you like them, im sure you will, quite a fair few trappers are using these now and i have never had one negative comment.

  9. that is one i bent with the pliers, all that wants is cut through the 2 wires in the middle and then twisted straight, you need extra length on the wire to be able to form it, there is no wire waste forming with the jigs. Once made let them rust, rub the copper coating off the wire with a scouring pad before forming cutting wire and forming the trigger, it will then rust faster. My catch rate with putanges has improved massively.  I call these Cumbrian style triggers.

Well the grandson just caught his first mole in a petange gifted by DIDO.1 he found a run along a fence and put them in there and was delighted when he checked and found he had caught once again big thanks to DIDO.1

well done, best traps going for me are Putanges, even more versatile for me with my custom triggers, i use different sized ones for different sized tubes, i want the jaws of the trap up to the tube wall, that gives you the best possible chance of the mole hitting the trigger correctly. I have them rigged up on different coloured spun poly twine for ease of identification. The shape makes them fire much better than rectangular triggers that can tip back without the trap firing. I make 4  different sizes, the pic has 3 sizes and a standard trigger on. I made jigs for forming these triggers but they can be made with pliers, they are made from mild steel 2.4 gas welding wire, Tig wire is ok for the jigs but is hard wire, the gas welding wire bends much easier with the pliers. Knock yourself a few up i am positive you will see the results.

I mainly use Putanges, odd times barrel traps, if i get a backfill with either i change the set to a talpex.

Many thanks for the info and pics he said he was not packing his trap as much as that so he has learned something new thanks

Each to there own but i plug any voids with mud then push some soil down the sides of the trap to stabilise the trap then cover with a inch or so of loose soil to seal the trap.

I can't say for sure but yes I would think so, they are designed for the job. You can feel it pop when you hit a tube.

i used to make probes, i cant weld no more after having to have a pacemaker so cant do it no more. I made them from 10mm 304 stainless, 30mm tube handle capped off, i drilled a hole in the handle and let the bar in to the inside of the other side of tube before welding, i welded a bit off 16mm bar on the end and shaped up with the grinder to make a bulb, i did smaller ones out of 6mm bar with a 9mm bulb on for hard or stoney ground, it is easy to feel the give when it hits the tube with a bulb on, as you lift it you can feel it banging on the top of the tube.

Moorman and Tank, do you mostly use the Duffus style trap?  Any particular supplier you recommend?

the uk putange barrel traps are good value, i have them and flatpack but i dont use barrel traps often now. Putanges are the most versatile trap for me, i can use them anywhere, i designed my own triggers that work great and i make them in different sizes so i can fill the tube with the trap, for me standard sized triggers are on the small side, big way round.

  15. I have flatpack ad uk putanges supplies flat bottomed traps, you will get at least 2 uk ones to a flatpack, the only plus faltpack have over the uk ones is they are stainless, the uk ones have a much stronger spring, catch the mole round the ribs, you can adjust the trigger on flatpack but you dont need touch the uk ones. I use putanges 90% of the time but if i had to buy more barrels i would be getting uk putange ones, they also do round loops.

I always use the triggers on their side, earth is easy enough to move to make sure it's a perfect fit. You're spot on with the snug fit,  it definitely helps.

Aye i agree, the mole has a far better chance of hitting the trap correctly if the jaws are tight to the tube wall, in big tubes it would be so easy for the mole to miss entering the Jaws. i used to get a few misses in big tubes so i would revert to tunnel traps but since making my own triggers my putanges are much more versatile, i am quite happy to only use putanges now, you can get so many more traps in a bucket or quad box. I made a few triggers at the weekend, put a few on ebay but no bids yet, i have gifted loads of these triggers for folk to try and the folk always come after more.

  17. Putanges, push them right down the tube as far as possible, make sure tube has been cleaned out with a spoon. I make my own triggers for putanges, very kittle on rusty traps, good rusty trap and trigger has little chance of false firing.  i make different sizes for different sized tubes, in my opinion you want the jaws of the trap hugging the tube wall, i have the triggers to do that. the shape also stops any tip backs of the trigger without firing, since i started making these a few years back my catch ratio with putanges has gone right up. i like the pipe trap as well for spooky moles and has been previously said move the to a different location.

I love them and almost bought one a few years ago until my mate started to see quite a few with engine problems in his garage, EGR faults, timing chain tensioner issues, DPF faults

not good that, i am looking at retiring and doing moles a lot more, to be honest a jimny commercial would be best for me but no way i am paying 25k for one. have a octavia scout at present, great motor, pulls trailer and quad great but although it can be all wheel drive and is pretty good on grass it hasnt the height clearance for getting in and out of some fields with the trailer. will keep the octavia whatever and my mrs can sell her fiesta and use the octavia.
