Please be aware of puppy strangles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pinguu replied to pinguu's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
This is the small report from the vet. Clearly stating he had strangles and bad round worms baring in mind I wormed him when I got him and the vet wormed him. He was a very poorly pup. He seemed fine when I got him but 2 days later he went down hill and just kept going. My wife is fuming as she has basically paid £150 for a pup and then best part of £100 pounds to try help him and its ended in her sitting explaining to our daughter why he won't wake up. -

My wife has tried contacting the breeder with no response and we have also got a report from the vet to show him. She has asked politely for a refund but he isn't responding. -

I made the breeder aware of the condition and that the pup died as I don't know if any other pups were effected but I have heard nothing back from him since I text to say the pup died. -

I had never heard of it until this morning. I think people should be aware because it causes so much pain and suffering as you said it affects the rest of the dogs life. if I'd have known maybe my post would be a little cheery. I know now but it's been a hard lesson ill be more thorough when picking a pup next time. -

It's not contagious nor is it proven genetic but the vet said if he pulled through its best not to stud him as he may pass on a faulty gene. It is classed as an auto immune disease. -

I think it only right to pass on info, I'm genuinly heart broken he was a lovely dog and I wouldn't want anyone or their dog to suffer as we have you feel helpless for them I just held him so he knew he wasn't alone. -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_strangles as a few of you will be aware i have just lost a little patterdale pup to this condition he had just left his mum. Please be aware of the condition and the symptoms, its a horrendous illness which causes alot of pain and suffering but....... if caught early can be treated successfully my pup wasnt so lucky. Please just take 5 minutes to make yourself aware of it and learn how to recognize it. atb guys Carl.

He has sadly passed away at 10:30 this evening -
I've spent a week trying, spent a fortune at the vets but sadly my little patterdale has passed away. He didn't even see the outside. My wife is inconsolably as is my 3 yr old. Sadly he was just too young to fight.

I always thought patterdale had bull in em else they would be fell. Could be mistaken I suppose.

Had him back for second dose of steroids this evening, he is starting to show signs of fight. The vet has given me antibiotics and steroids to last a week she thinks ill see change hour on hour. Poor bugger has had a hard first few weeks of his little life, he stands me at the price of a pug now lol. He is probably gonna have a huge bond with me after all the nursing he needs but as they say you get out what you put in. -
Well it seems I was wrong about the blockage. My pup was very poorly again this morning, I have found a very good vet whom has diagnosed puppy strangles. He is now pumped with antibiotics, steroids and has a hump of fluid on his back to help prevent dehudration. I am taking him for a second dose of steroids this evening! I am not and will not give up on him!

Oh yeah new vet for sure, she was wanting to take my dog on a hunch diagnosis and charge me Boxing Day out of hours fees for the privilege.

Ok, so my pup took a turn for the worse after I wormed him, I ended up taking him to the vet as he was doing no better, the vet was not the most helpful person she suggested he had parvo and the best option was euthanasia, well had he been presenting more symptoms then yes I would have accepted defeat but he wasn't, it was only whilst reading online that over counter wormers don't always clear the problem first go and leave stunned worms in pups intestinal track of which they lack the ability to clear, i thought maybe the poor bugger is blocked and backing up. So going against the wormer recom

He is eating today, still sleeping a lot but when he is up and about he is more vocal and active than yesterday. I'm hoping another 24 hours and he will be back to his normal little self.
-
yeah me too! mine is a black brindle the parents were black all other pups were red and black..
-
I have been syringe feeding him lactose free milk and sugar syrup for past few hours.

Yesterday i wormed my 8 week old patterdale with the recommended amount of beaphur worming syrup. about 8 hours later the pup had passed a fair amount of round worm and was eating as normal. today however i have got in from walking the lurchers to find the wife holding a very miserable lethargic pup, she said he wont eat or drink,he just wants to sleep. i have spoken to a duty vet who says this is common for young puppies and to be sure to keep him hydrated and he should be ok in about 48 hours if not take him back, has anyone else experienced this when worming i am pretty sure i haven't but i

Was that pup from Staffordshire mate? I got a pat pup there was 4 in the litter 2 black males n 2 brindle bitches it looks like one of them No from a guy in Hyde.

When I have been out with lads on digs the majority have had patterdale terriers, so I'm a bit confused why you are saying they don't need bull, I can understand if it was extra bull thrown in to the mix. Am I just being a little dim here, or misunderstood as the pup I have just bought has patterdale mother and father but two in the litter threw brindle. There is no extra bull involved. Both parents were clearly workers the guy showed me them both and they were clearly patterdales

by walk do you mean jack? i would have thought the bull would make em game?

well i just managed to fight for one about an hour since and when i say fight it was the last one and the guys phone was going mad.i was asking as i never see one before and the guy couldnt send me a pic so i just went anyway. i think he is a cracking little pup and parents were clearly good working stock.
