  1. I've got a lab x here mate. Trained to

A certain standard and she will go through any cover 100%. I've never worked with springers/ cockers or even labs so I don't know what's good and bad. My lab x is tireless, I

Can't tire her out. Must be the bit of collie. A good fried if mine has just bought a lab x cocker/springer (not sure which one) from a working farm 8wks old. He's keeping it as a pet but this to me sounds like a good cross. They bred them intentionally for themselves and sold the rest on.

So if cockers/ springers are better at the job, why would you want a lab?

Sounds like you have a good dog there then mate  for me personally i woundnt get a lab to work cover im not saying there not any good because that would be wrong for me to say as im sure like yours there is some good ones but for me i think why mess about with a cross when there is pedigees that are there to do the job and have been for years. ill be getting a springer or maybe a cocker with a good pedigree to work deep cover for a bird of prey, lurcher and some rough shooting so will be doing some retrieveing to. If i wanted a dog to mainly just retreive on land and water then a lab would be a better choice but like i said thats my personal choice and every man to himself what works for one may not work for another

  2. from what i understand is mate it all depends on what you are going to use the dog for mate most labs are not used to work cover or wont work deep cover as a springer or cocker will and depending on the size of game your hunting to mate. Im no expert mate as im looking to get my first springer or cocker next year but you just need to look at the land your working what quarry your hunting, how your hunting and then look at the breeds and see whats for you, well thats all im doing

  3. Nice work Billy, Glad Thor's starting to do the job now mate, as for his 'calling' to you i can't comment, i'm sure someone will know!

    keep the pics/story coming mate

cheers mate he has had a radio on in his mews sinse last night just so its not quiet all the time out in the garden and it will mask any noise that might come from the house and also i think a fox has been hanging around and im hoping that will keep it away if it can hear a human voice. Anyway its seems to be working as my little one just had a fit in the kitchen over his breakfast and not a noise i know he will start calling once he sees me but i am just working on breaking the habit of calling and keeping it to a min and by the time it come s to his moult ill put him away for 6 months and hopefully it will break the calling fully. Had a good chat with jaspa last night and he came up with a really good idea that because he is not calling at all at night and now the clocks have gone back it will obviously get darker earlier so im going to fly him later in the day so by the time i get back it will be getting dark even if i have to leave him in his box for an hour which i did yesterday and it worked well and then put him away once dark. A few lads have been giving me some good advice so a big thanks to jaspa and grovsey and thanks for taking time out of there busy lives its much appreciated and look forward to meeting you both :toast::thumbs:

plenty of kills under his belt might quieten him down if not when its time for moult seal the aivery and have half open roof and leave him fat till mid september mine started first season thats what i done never screamed last season and hasnt this season touch wood know how you feel good luck with him

Cheers mate I covered his window yesterday but have left the roof open for him and fitted cctv (cheers punch and judy) so i can check him without having to disturb him on the days im not flying him. I fly him most days so im not to worried about him in a closed off mews. I didnt fly him yesterday as he was to heavy as he had a good feed on a kill saturday so i had to put him in his travel box while i worked on his mews and he didnt make a sound and thats with me next to him drilling, hammering and talking and the kids where out there to so this is why i have covered his window as it might keep him calmer. He was killing friday and saturday but we wasnt out long as he nailed every rabbit that bolted but going back out today and see how he goes. Thanks again mate i hope it does work and will keep this updated as i hope it will help other thinking of getting into falconry because at the moment it has totally taken over my life and not as easy as some think.

  5. Just thought i would do a quick update on Thor and some photos of out hunting. Thor has a real liking for pheasents and has smashed a few out of the sky but has not managed to hold on to them on the ground but hopefully that will come with experience and time. He is working well with the ferrets and is nailing rabbits well now after a slow start. Now the bad part he is calling when he can hear or see me in the garden :( which i must admit has really pissed me off :censored: :censored: . It aint constant just goes into one but soon calms down once im out of the garden. He is really quiet when hunting and flying and on the fist and when we get back from hunting for a few hours but will start again if he hears or sees me but if i go out in the garden at night which i do every night i could set a fire work off and he doesnt make a sound :hmm: ???????? Anyway a few good lads from here are giving me ideas to help with this and hopefully it will work. Here is a few photos out hunting

  8. i never used to carry much with me , and while out with a mate and his bird my female tried to pull a rabbit from under a fence and pulled a tallon clean off , pissing blood my mate pulls out a little bag with all sorts in it and gave me some pottasium crystals , they stopped the bleeding pretty fast and go nice and hard , with some germoline new skin applied a couple of times a day i had my bird back out within 2 weeks , so now i allways take a little pouch with bits and bobs in . cheers mick

A good story and good example mate

  9. Hahaha i know what your saying there mate you cut a finger or something and there aint a blaster in sight but you have everything you need for the animals hahaha. The vasalin mix is a very good idea mate keep any crap out of the injury and keep it where its meant to be. Might have to see if i could get someone to show me how to use a crop tube or salin properly. Something i forgot to ask about how do you apply treatment to any sores on the feet if needed Thor hasnt got any problem but just in case would you use a unsharped pencil or something like that?

I always have a tub of vaseline handy under the bed mate if you want some .

Foot sores I gently fine spray with VIRKON after a meal to keep them clean from any bacteria, you can also stick some Iodine on them with a cotton bud if needed. this is another time when a bird made to the Hood comes in handy, lifes made alot easier if the birds a bit arsey ......

:icon_eek: i think ill give that one a miss but thanks all the same mate

  10. a few things I have in mine are some Iodine, I also have mixed some Iodine with some vasaline in a small tub, its handy as its stick to a wound and stays there longer, some Glucose saline is also good, a decent crop tube and a good probiotic is handy...

I have antibiotics too namely Amoxycillin and some other things such as Liquid parafin, also some Thiamine for the Goshawks just incase.... just a few things off the top of my head mate, my bird first aid box is better than the one we have in doors for us ........

  11. gwr vet do a first aid kit ,, just down the road from my work , prob bit dear but all you willl need

cheers steve can you text there number over to me if you have it. like you said it might be expensive buying from them like most things that come from vets but might be worth finding out what they have in theres and putting it together myself.

  12. The only stuff i realy use at home is iodine and sudocrem on the leg's where he sometime's scuff's them around the anklet area when he has been bating about..other than that im not that clued up on the broken leg/wing side of thing's..i have micro pore tape and stuff that can be used for splint's on the leg's and also bit's of bandage if i ever need to strap a injured wing up while going to the vet's..the best thing i do have is a casting jacket which can be placed on a hooded injured bird which stop's any movment whatsoever..

I dont carry one mate but i have bit's and bob's at home..all i carry when flying is a spare leash swivel and jesses a small creance some cable ties and a pair of snip's..and a dead bunnie incase i ever have trouble recalling the bird..luckely it's never been needed but it's peace of mind for me..

My bird is not bothered by the fire work's and happely just sit's in the weathering...but if you are worried it wont hurt to box him up till they have finnished..

Nice one thanks mate. What do you keep at home mate? I also carry spare jesses, leash, swivel batteries and so on and your right mate its peace of mind i always have a loaded lure pad just in case you know if you dont have it you will need it always the way. I think i will bring him in during the fire works and box him up we live near a few place that hold fire work displays so get a bit loud. cheers mate
