  1. i agree about the raw mate and also you will get a lot less crap feeding the raw. My lurcher used to eat his when i first got him and i fed him on complete james well beloved so i used to cover the crap with curry powder or anything that he wouldnt like the smell or taste and it worked fast. I feed raw now mate which i always did before hand but wanted to give the complete a go. But if you change over to raw mate do some research first as you will need to get the percentages right and what your going to give throughout the week. I work on around 70% meat and bone mainly chicken wings, chicken carcases, lamb and beef bones the rest is veg, offal and off cuts mince from the butchers, fish, egg, tin tomatoes, rice, game when i have it and left overs. I have white boards in the feeding shed and i try to chart there weight and adjust the diet if needed according to there work load. Im no expert mate but it works for me and good luck

  2. Thanks everyone so angry at vets at the moment for getting our hopes up fill like ive been cheated they never should of told me to rule the brain tumor out will be moving my other 2 dogs to another vets asap. Thanks again

So was it a brain tumour then?

Alright mate we couldnt afford the MRI scan as we reached our limit on the insurance but we did phone about and they wanted £1500 so we just couldnt afford that. But her mouth started to drop on the left side and her left eye kept flicking and she started to get tremours all over her body when she was still which are all signs of the brain tumor. The steroids did really pick her up but we ran out for about a day and a half and i couldnt believe how fast she went backwards. She went straight off her food and wanting to sleep alot and she just looked tied. To give you some idea how much food she was missing at the end, i feed my dogs raw and my older lurcher has 2-3% of body weight in food a day which is around 14 chicken wings, the younger one 4-5% which is around 19 chicken wings. Sasha should of been eating around a kilo a day and she was struggling to eat 8 chicken wings so i had to make the rest up through the feeding tube. I think i always knew it was a tumor but just wanted to give her a fighting chance but at the end it just wasnt fair on her or me.

Thanks for the other comments folks means a lot

  3. as above im having a bit of hassel getting my 3qtr whippet 1 qtr grey to jump fences he will jump 5 foot high walls no bother at all but as soon as it comes to fences or gates he will not even try i dont know if it is because he can see through them i have tryed crossing a fence and leaving him on the other side and just walking away but he always seems to find a way through any help and advice would be appreciated

    Cheers Bryson

Had a same type of problem myself so found a gate where he couldnt get round and just stayed there till he done the jump. In the video below (if it works) he is a year old now he is 2 and loves jumping. The 1st vid is the first time at the gate then the 2nd vid i made him do it straight away and then left it there untill the next jump training hope it helps mate.

Thats a leg break waiting to happen training dogs to jump over that!!

Any jump can cause an injury wether it be gates or barbed wire i would rather give the dog the confidence to jump a gate than not. I knew he can jump the hight as he clears the fences with ease but in my opinion a dog needs to be educated with different situations rather than coming across these situations in the field. My biggest permission has a lot of locked 5 bar gates so he needed to learn as i would rather he jumped the gates than the 3 strand barbed fence as he is 26ins tts and always catches himself if he tries to get under but i understand what your saying mate. But whats the diffence from what the orginal post says about jumping 5ft walls??

  5. Right some good news from the vets yesterday and because she is eating so well now and is looking so bright and she has responded so well to the steroids that they can rule out cancer and tumor :boogy: she has had to have some antibiotics because of the area where she has the tube is slightly infected but other than that the vet couldnt believe how different she looks from the weekend. Monday morning i was sat outside the vets for 20 mins deciding wether or not to take her in to get put down as she was in such a bad way. Anyway she is still eating and drinking well even chased the neighbours cat yesterday  and for the fisrt time in weeks she is wagging her stump of a tail at me to say im over the moon would be an under statement. The vet says i can cut down on the tube feeding now so im hoping ill be able to go back to sleeping in bed as i have been sleeping with her for the past 7 days so i can do the 2 hour feeds. Thanks again for everyones comments and concerns

  6. Some good news since taking the steroids she is like a new dog shes not sleeping all the time really enjoying her walks today since yesterday she has eaten about 18 sausages, 2 chicken wings small amount of mince and some dry food and nearly a whole bowl of water plus all the food im feeding through the tube. Fingers crossed she has turned a corner.

    Glad to hear mate

Cheers Geoff mate been a real roller coaster this past few weeks mate some times i wounder why we put ourselves through all this but fingers crossed mate

  7. glad to here things are looking better mate, however just remember steroids create a high that shows as an improvement in dogs conditions, its not a cure in itself. but i do hope the dogs turned a corner mate

Cheers mate  im not going to get to carried away as i know they will left her a bit but it was to stop the immune system working against the the gut so she can start eating again and they did say if it is a tumor or some type of cancer she wont eat still and also she aint showing signs of having a tumor so i need to just keep working with her  For the first time last night she had some chicken wings and some mackrel fillets and this morning she had 5 chicken wings and her food through the tube with the steroids. I have a appiontment at the vets this afternoon so will update then cheers again everyone

  8. Have they looked into any auto immune disorders?

Not sure what you meant by inflamed cells?

Dogs do not need to have all the symptoms, mine did not.

Symptoms of canine autoimmune hemolytic anemia vary in severity (from very mild to fatal) depending on the titer of red blood cell autoantibodies and the dog’s general health. Fatality is most likely to occur when there is severe and rapid red blood cell destruction or liver involvement. However, fatality can also result from secondary complications. These complications include the release of coagulants from dying red blood cells. These coagulants, in turn, can cause the formation of blood clots that lodge in the heart or lungs. In addition, fragments of red blood cells or complexes of red blood cells and autoantibodies can lodge into the kidneys and interfere with renal function. Symptoms of canine AIHA include:

    • Anemia, with low red blood cell count, hemoglobin and/or hematocrit
    • Fever
    • Depression
    • Weakness
    • Fatigue
    • Pallor of the mucus membranes
    • Hematuria (presence of blood in the urine)
    • Enlarged Spleen
    • Seizures
    • Peripheral neuropathy

    Clinical Signs Used for Diagnosis

    • Nonregenerative anemia
    • Spherocytosis seen on blood smear
    • Positive direct Coombs test

They did say something about the immune system working against the gut in some way which is why they suggested the steroids but to be honest mate i havent taken it all in with so many ups and downs over the last few weeks and with the 2 hourly feeding regime im totally shattered and trying look after the kids and the other dogs im hanging mate.

  9. Thanks everyone i spoke to the vets this after noon and they had her biopsy results back and they came back inconclusive there was no cancer cells from the areas they took the samples but they did come across some inflammed cells which maybe some type of gastro stomach problem but also they see these cells when there are other problems like brain tumor/cancers so we have but her on a very strong steroid which will help cure or control a stomach problem and the vet said if this helps you will see signs of inprovement within a few days but we have also said if it doesnt work by the end of the week we will be putting her to sleep. so ill be praying like mad and fingers crossed it will work. Thanks again everyone for your nice comments ill keep you updated
  10. Think I've talked the misses into me getting a running dog to acompany me, my ferrets and my patterdale.. when my foot is 100% fixed and im back at work..

our house is a small 2 bedroom.. and we had a daughter 13 weeks ago.. the patterdale lives indoors with my misses's westie so as you can imagine.. theres no room inside (other wise i wouldnt mind).. my ferrets are in the shed and im just wondering.. what kind of outside kennel could i use ..

Im thinking of extending the shed and figuring out a way to make a kennel with that so the ferrets and the dog in the same place (obviously seperated)

what would i need to make it safe and secure..and safe for the dog

pictures of your kennels would be great so i can get an idea

to note: Im really tired so sorry if that didnt make any sence!

    thanks!

This might help mate my old set up dog one side ferrets the other, half solid devider half wired so they see each other everyday comes in handy when you start working them together. shame your not closer mate i need my bathroom tiled and i would of built one for you

  11. Im posting this on here out of desperation really as i know there is wealth of experience with the dog lads on here that maybe able to help. My Rottie went off her food and water and sleeping all the time and no interest in anything at all. I took her to the vets and they said we think its her Hips which i didnt agree with but they said try her on some pain releif which did bring her up a little but still wont eat so i took her back to the vet 2 days later and they said we will need to keep her in to get some fluids in her and run some tests. The next day they done blood tests, ultra sound and other scans and xrays and it all came back all clear not even a sign of joint problem which are common with this breed. They put a camera down her throat to take a look and nothing. The vet then suggets we open her up and take a closer look at all her main organs and intestines which i agreed to as we wanted to get to the bottom of whats causing her to be so ill. Again this came back clear and they said she is perfect and we are not sure what to do next. The only other thing is maybe a brain tumor or something like that but she aint showing any signs of what we would expect to see if this was the case but then they told me that i have a limit on my insurance which i said how it covers up to 20k at which they said yeah but only 2k a year :censored: :censored: :censored: so basiclly they have inserted a tube in her side and im feeding a mixture through a suringe into the tube every 2 hours along with her meds. im sleeping down stairs with her so i can get her out and feed her every 2 hours and keep checking her. I have been trying to force feed her to try and get her to chew but she keeps spitting it out its like she has forgot how to chew. I feed all my dogs on raw so ive tried her with that but she just picks a chicken wing up and then it just fall out of her mouth.. She doesnt even look at water but im giving her water with her feed through the tube. Yesterday she has eaten some sausage but wont touch the boiled chicken or anything else. Ive taken her off the meds yesterday and she seems more awake and even been on a walk yesterday and this morning. I have asked the vet if it could be depression but they just throb me off maybe because there aint much money to be made with depression :hmm: as ther aint no expensive operation they can do. So my question is has anyone experienced this with any of there dogs if so what was the out come or can anyone suggest somethig she may eat or encourage her to eat. She is 6 years old in march never been ill before always loved her food and walks and is very fit. Im even starting to think am i doing the right thing by keeping her going through a tube as i dont want her to be unhappy or put her through any more pain as even if she had a brain tumor i have already said i wont put her through a brain operation as i dont think it would be fair or if it will help or not. Hope no one minds me posting this here in the lurcher section but would like your views or suggestions please thanks for reading.
