Based on what? The chaps been there and seen for himself. We get fed an anti propaganda view, he goes and  looks.

Thank you for sharing my post Sandy. I think historically the Spanish have had issues but there was also a time we pushed women into the sea to find out if they were witches. Cultures advance.
I have been out there three times and I’m them times met countless galgueros, podenqueros and rehaleros and seen nothing that I haven’t seen elsewhere in the world. As a matter of fact the worst things I have seen in dog work, were not in Spain.

In them three trips I have met well over 100 rehaleros, all loved and were proud of the dogs they had and able to discuss the lineage etc. there’s evidently certain bloods that are more desirable than others in the same way that salukis and patterdales are discussed. I have seen over 1000 dogs and 99% of them are strong, fit animals. Now and again you do cross one or two that are below weight but the rest of the pack are healthy so not a reflection of how they are fed or treated.

a typical monteria day can have up to 30 packs of dogs, each pack could contain 30 dogs. The people I have hunted with have not been cherry picked and the vast vast majority of them don’t know I am coming until I am there, so I am not being shown their better examples so to speak.

as you have said, instead of buying stories fed to us by Spanish antis I got off my bum and went to see for myself, and I saw. Their reputation is unwarranted based on historical stereotypes and it is a shame that fellow hunters in the uk will vehemently deny the lies of uk antis, but willingly buy them from Spanish antis. Thus making them themselves, an anti.

  2. For anyone interested I have been back to Spain again! There’s videos of it all on my Instagram and more pictures on both Instagram and Facebook. I think I had seven days in total with the dogs after boar, red deer, mouflon and Barbary sheep. I even had an evening thrush shooting in the olive groves.

  3. Well, all my hunting for this trip is finished. Not as successful as last time but just as enjoyable. My last two days have been with rehala on monteria but these monteria were not fenced and so it was much more real hunting. We didn’t manage to get on any quarry and the approx 30 guns didn’t even shoot anything. Day one we hunted boar and red deer, day two we hunted ibex and aoudad, despite lots of tracks and fresh pop we couldn’t find them.

  4. Anyway, on a lighter note.

yesterday I hunted hares with falcon and saluki. I flushed our only hare on the day and it unfortunately got away but was great to see and I’ll be joining him again next season at a better area. One saluki was a direct gift from the Bedouin and the other was a dog bred in Saudi crossed with a Spanish show saluki. The Bedouin dog was a much nicer type and there was definitely a difference between them.

good dogs granted a quick death.

as I said , why not just shoot them ??

Stories, if it was going on and the people writing these stories were actually discovering/finding/seeing this, would they not take a photo to prove it? The only images I have seen are grainy and from the 90’s at best. 30 years ago now, our own hunting landscape was vastly different 30 years ago. Communities grow and the hunting community is no different.

    Bingo!

Easy done when the dogs are on strange land and the locals don’t know them. They may be picked up by police etc. No chip or collar and they go to a rescue.

More and more are adopting gps systems now but these aren’t cheap. As they become more prominent I bet we hear of les and less “abandoned” dogs

More they get hold of them and refuse to give them back is what I’ve heard. Powers to confiscate animals is not with charities in Spain mate. The RSPCA and their like would not be tolerated like they are in Blighty.

One thing I have noticed from Spanish dogs if that the vast majority will not go to anyone but their owner, galgos, podencos and Podenco crosses. I think these charities often misconstrue this as fear but doesn’t appear to be. I have a vid on my phone of a Podenco pup absolutely beside itself wanting to play but refusing to come near me, very clearly happy and excited in the vid.

so when the rehala dogs get lost and these charities find them they assume the dogs are scared and abandoned but in reality their owners are posting on the fb groups

I’ve said it before. 99% of the galgos around me are rescues. And there are a lot. Obviously it’s not everyone treating their animals with contempt but it does seem to be very prevalent and not just bullshit out of the mouths of woke, bunny lovin, tree huggin cnuts.

There are also lots of stories of rescues stealing galgos from hunters no?

  9. I would also add, these dogs have to perform just as much as

Nope, since about 3-4 years ago, maybe a little longer. Something to do with mishaps when they are out of sight and pet dogs.

@THE STIFFMEISTER The typewriter is one of the common methods. Fuuckin disgraceful imo.

That’s interesting I’ll look into it, I have been hunting the the president of rehala association and his Alano’s. He is also a solicitor so I would have thought if that was the case he would be all over it etc. see what I can find out

It’s illegal in Spain now to free hunt with Alanos or any other bull or mastiff breeds. Obviously it’s still going on but it is illegal mate.

So they are not allowed them with the rehala packs?

Read quite a lot into it lately , but is it true that the biggest threat to hunting with dogs in Spain is the way the dogs are treated post season??

read some horror stories online about galagos etc are literally either abandoned in the countryside or are tortured to death .
buried in wells , drowned in acid , tied to railways , thrown off boats , hung , why not just f***ing shoot them ??

    Horrendous

I can honestly say I’ve seen nothing but good husbandry and empathy to dogs and quarry.

there are lots of stories as you stated, but no images or evidence, the photos available look like they were taken with a potatoe in an age where every person has a camera phone in their pocket.

I’ve drove accross Spain twice now and the only stray dogs I’ve seen were a strong collie type dog. If I had a pound for everytime someone said “my friend lives in Spain and says that…” then my next trip would be paid for. there will undoubtedly be the odd person letting the team down but no different to the ratio of good Lurcher owners in the uk to ones with dogs living in wheelie bins walking on their own excrement.

whilst out here I have seen dogs fight and be treated the same way I would have handled it at home. I’ve seen a hardheaded galgo stay 2m away for an hour refusing to go back on the lead and when he was eventually caught wasn’t even told off. I’ve seen doh hares be taken home for rehab and release. I’ve seen a fourth rabbit checked and released because we only needed three on the day. I’ve seen boar-lets be caught accidentally, treated by a vet and then took home to be reared and released. I’ve seen a dogs teste removed from its sack by a boar and a vet called out to the field without second thought.

i think as stated, all of those stories are from antis and I personally have seen nothing but very impressive and sporting practice carried out.

  11. Gutted, sandymere was right and the final has changed to Sunday. I have boar and mouflon hunting plans for Sunday so not going to be able to attend. Instead I’m driving back to cordoba now and going to hopefully get two days boar hunting in instead.

Hopefully the final will be good, reports have that the rounds have been  mixed and caused some controversy with the judging. A little bitch, Africa looked a decent sort but broken in the quarters, rock hard plough, so might not feature.

She ran 6 times today in the semi’s, 5 of the runs were null as the hare was caught / got away in less than 55 seconds. The remaining course was won by Picara De Moris. I think they are running again tomorrow to settle the remaining point / 2 points. Here is the semi’s so far. Surprise of the palms, the favourite from what I saw, is out.

i also heard there was controversy in earlier rounds with a bitch being disqualified on medical grounds and had nothing wrong with her
