  1. so according to your logic and calculations if this stuff is as toxic to rats as it is to chickens they would have to eat their own body weight in poison to be effective, either its crap or your calculations are wrong, pluck one of the dead birds, if there are no external injuries visible and you`ve got blood all over the place then it must be from internal bleeding and they are shitting it out

The birds are full of maggots now.

Do you know what LD50 is? It is the amount of poison required to be lethal to 50% of a given population. The LD 50 for a rat is 9g of difenacoum which is the bait that's been used.

See the attached chart and do some maths for a 3kg chicken.

Here you can see how poison affects different animals.

    Egg bound is a possibility

  2. Strange non of the cocks died,if it was poison :hmm:

Exactly Why I'm slightly puzzled! Plus they are smaller birds so should in theory be more susceptible.

The amount of poison put down was minimal much less than what would kill 1 hen not 5, the LD50 is 1kg of poison per kg of bird, the birds were 3kg each at least. So you are looking at 10kg of poison there! Very unlikely imo. They were running around doing what chickens do at 3pm and 2 were dead by 5pm with no signs of poisoning such as lethargy or bleeding. It's very odd.

  3. I was called by a mate who has had a few chickens die suddenly. There are the inevitable rats. He had put rat poison down but not enough to kill the 5 hens, ld50 is 1000g pkg of bodyweight, 5 Big hens have died in 2 days with no outward signs of poisoning. Lots of blood on the perches but not obvious on the dead birds, no obvious signs of injury. They are rural. Any suggestions?

  4. So are bloody awful at the mo! Absolute rubbish in fact! Next day delivery took 3 days ordered on a tues morning and they charged for delivery when they said they wouldn't and half the stuff wasn't in there! Their 1 shots are rubbish their ant gel is rubbish etc they don't get our. Vote at the mo! Their new sales rep for our area came round the other week and had no idea certain products that were being withdrawn are back on the market with a slightly different formulation. Add to that trying to sell shite like new water/gel capsules for traps that the samples lasted less than a week before the shrivelled to nothing. Piss poor Imo, kill germ gets our cash these days.

  5. In my post, 15 mins and no ants moving around the kitchen as they were on the gel ,which was placed by the nest entrances, they were on it like a tramp on chips. As good if not better than sprays and no risk of staff slipping on a wet area. The gel is by far and away the way to treat black ants in any situation. I very rarely use sprays anymore due to the efficacy of gel baits. I:E no retreats required and very happy customers! I deal with care homes that used to be riddled with ants as people kept spraying the worker ants (the symptoms) without eradicating the nests ( the cause) Gel or spray not both.

My boss loves bloody ficam w for everything and will not realise the benefits of other treatments like gels. I won't use ficam w due to the unsightly residues.

Reading your post it implies you would spray to appease the canteen manager when open and come back to place gel once closed? So 2 visits for 1 treatment? There is no offence meant by any of this its just interesting to see how people treat things differently.

Dido you hit the nail on the head! Pretty obvious if you kill the workers bringing the poison back to the nest before they can feed the queen and larvae you are wasting your time IMO.

  6. Why spray and gel?? I treated a very busy ant colony in a kitchen 2 days ago in that massive heat, they were running round like they were on speed! A few blobs of gel by the nest and 15 mins later there were no ants running around as they were all on the gel. Spray and gel in the same areas defeats the purpose of the gel. Spraying in a works canteen when open is wrong in the first place with food being prepped or served. Gel is the most effective and sensible treatment I've seen yet.

  7. too many idiots out there willing to work for peanuts to make it worthwhile. If pesties charged proper money instead of trying to be the cheapest then yeah there's good money to be made but only if you are prepared to graft bloody long hours for it! It ain't all mole trapping and shooting, 95% is just boring old popping open bait boxes! Work for a big firm first, get your tickets and experience then decide if you can go it alone. Many try and many fail!!

  8. We use crawling boards and after considerable time trying to source a good product we baught sx environmental ones.

Not cheap but you get what you pay for and they are a superb product.

Only issue is height of roof which has prevented getting them in at times but very rarley. They provide you with a good stable platform to work from.

On every job I inspect roof space if accessable and remove every nest which is accessable.

A removed nest means no call back and no issue with associated insects.

2 of the worst carpet beatle jobs I have ever come across have been associated with wasp nests with the numbers to be seen to be believed.

I was able to locate nests on both jobs and when you broke the nest up they were full with carpet beatle larvea which must have fed on wasp larvea left in the nest.

    Nature is amazing.

The only issue I have treating nests in roof spaces is the quality of products available.

Sorex wasp nest destroyer mki and 2 were a fantastic product and you could treat a number of nests with the same can if you used it sparingly and sat back and let it do its job. When you broke nest up to remove them it amazed me with even large nest how this product had knocked the wasp flat.

Last season we used Sorsec Wasp nest destroyer which was ineffective with poor knock down needing 1 to 2 cans for a nest and even then nest could be still active when breaking them up.

We have gone to the digrian product this year and will also try the killgerm foam.

    What products are others using?

In respect to PPE i would never commence treating a nest without thick pair of overalls and bee vail over the top.

On a treatment in a garden a number of years ago a nest on a rockery appeared to be below ground and I pulled a shrub up to locate nest entry piont but the nest was in the shrub and it broke open as I lifted it. The reaction was instant and wasps were all over my trousers as at that time I only wore the vail. They stung through my trousers went up my trousers and stung me through my socks and went up my trouser legs.

Prior to treatment the customer reported they were going to deal with it but thaught they would get a proffesional in. I looked realy proffesional running round the garden like a lunatic. I retreated to my vehicle outside the garden but some of the wasps followed me all the way.

When treating nest in air bricks I have had them stuck in the leather section of the gloves trying to sting you. A very small percentage of nests I treat every year show a level of aggression which has tobe seen to be believed. Confidence in PPE is essential.

On trianing courses a number of people delivering the trianing have come out with the statement I have never used ppe when removing nests from roof spaces. Something I treat with the contempt it deserves every time I hear the comment,

It is a fact particularily if you use a torch with a red filter that you do not see the aggression from wasps you see in an external environment but at times they are every where dealing with them without ppe is totally rediculous just my ipinion.

Hope we all have a good season all pundits are predicting a bumper season with weather being very suitable for wasps.

Don't you use an oil based insecticide in a 1litre Gloria? Far more effective than any spray cans! Instant knockdown and it kills the larvae in the near. Any nest easily accessible gets that from me with the poles and dust for stuff at height.

Totally agree with the PPE too, only an ass treats any bees or wasps without it on! No room for hard men in this line of work, I too have been chased by a huge swarm of wasps even before I treated the nest, all I did was move the clematis away with the pole and bloody hell they were out in a flash!! A good couple of hundred in no time! Proper stream of wasps like a cartoon followed me down the garden as I legged it wearing full PPE, without it I would probably be dead! !

  9. I move where I can but there are times they gotta go.

Removed a honeybee comb from an urn on a large building roof today as its getting a new roof put on with major refurb being done. 20 kg of comb and honey removed, bloody messy even with long gloves and white suit on!

  10. Coumetratlyl foam at the mo, looking to use more 1st gen in the future tho.

Customers don't like monitoring baits and the fact you won't be killing the pests between visits using them. I use traps for mice whenever I can.

Imo joe public should have no access to any 2nd gen poisons. They don't read the label and neither do they understand how to use it or how it works. The trouble is the domestic market is huge and it'll never be removed from public sale. Smaller more expensive packs are being produced tho.

  11. I Believe that is changing, yet again. If you can justify its use for more than the 35 days then there is no issue. Farms are a perfect example of somewhere this can be justified. Little shop or domestic contract with no activity for 6 months you couldn't justify it imp We have a huge pig farm, non tox isn't an option neither are traps or dogs as rats are in the lined roofs. We shoot the shit out of it over the winter. 1st generation poisons work very well if used properly as the strains that were resistant have generally died off due to 2nd generation poisons used. If in doubt 1st generation with more frequent visits to keep the bait in them.

A good paper trail is required to prove its being used properly.

  12. Bought an Audi A4 1.8T off a trader 150 miles from my house. Looked and drove well on the test drive. Almost got home and the oil light came on, popped into halfrauds as I was passing bought some oil and topped it up. Light kept coming on every time it was under load. Turns out the engine sludges up if not serviced properly with the right oil etc. when I serviced it and changed the oil filter the filter was half the size it should be! Got it independently inspected and it needed the sump dropped, new strainer fitted new oil etc to the tune of £500. Told the dealer what was wrong and I wanted half towards the repair. 3 months of endless fone calls him saying he will send the cash. I got in my car and drove up there with a mate, his face was a picture when he saw me! Told him in no uncertain terms I want my cash and expenses for my trouble in front of a few customers.... He folded up like a head shot driven pheasant and Funnily enough the cash just happened to be sat in a drawer in the office.

I f****n hate chancers like that!
