  1. I haven't bought a rimmy yet but I've more or less got my head round the range. The Synthetic stocks have been criticized as being too week for bipod use - any owners care to comment?

The wooden stocks are either 'droopy' for use with open sites or 'straight' which is better with a scope. Of course you can use a scope with a droopy stock but it's considered better to have a solid connection between cheek and stock so a higher stock is better. The droopy stock should line your eye up lower for open sites.

The wooden straight stock models are American which has a normal barrel and Varmint which has heavy barrel which is supposedly more accurate but - erm - heaver.

There are graphs on the internet showing muzzle velocity for various barrel lengths. 16 inches doesn't cost much velocity and is handier in vehicles and woodland but costs a bit more.

So my choice would be an 16" American.

Now, don't ask about cleaning HMR but look up some old threads about it.

    Cheers,

  2. Whilst each case will be judged on its merrits, these are not as far as I can remember things you will be asked about. So ask yourself for your own concience how you will ensure that they never have access to your guns. Sure they will be locked up most of the time and the locaton of the key kept secret (even from the firearms officers), but you need to leave them out to warm up and dry out somtimes.

Go ahead with your application - there is little to loose.

  3. This is an old chestnut. BASC has best cred I think when seeking ground to shoot over. I don't know if I'd do the same again - depends how flush I'm feeling. I always think NOBs has a pucker organisation, whereas one or two of the cheepies seem to be just insurance with little membership substance - does that matter? - you decide but I like the idea of getting advice from those who genuinely know stuff and maybe some other membership benefits as well. My firearms guy recommended BASC and I want him to think I listen to what he says, same goes for one of my shooting mentors.

    Enjoy

  4. You dont want the cost of running a 270 for bunnies either.

22lr zero at about 60yds for shorter range bunnies and perhaps close fox. Near silent with subsonic ammo and a moderator. Cheepest to run. Start here.

17hmr zero at 100 yds longer range bunnies and closeish fox. Less richochet - never know how to spell that.

22wmr zero at 100 yds (not so sure about that) longer range bunnies and closeish fox

Anything bigger will tear bunnies to pieces (check youtube) but more suitable for fox, 270 will kill them but bigger than most people use.

245 legal minimum for large deer.

Get a shotgun cert while your at it - its only an extra tenna.

  5. Chill out, I found it to be more a matter of listening than talking, take an interest and the FEO will be flattered. Do you know the guys at the country store already? If you get the same guy as I do he is a regular there, and keen on BASC as well, but hadn't heard of Will Garfit who is our local Artist, Conservationist and Pigeon harvester - worth reading his books they are full of local interest and shooting lore.

PM me if you want to go on an outing some time.

  6. I had only a slight glitch having mine done at the key cutters by Liverpool Street Station. He commented it was a key for a safe and took a blank off the wall and cut it for me just like any other. Got the wrong size shaft though but quickly put it right, just something to double check before leaving the shop.

I think I could get into a 2mm steel gun safe easily enough without the keys, it wouldn't be lockable after though.
