I can understand a young excitable dog knowing there's more than one in an earth and moving between both but for a terrier to actively move round an earth rounding quarry up into a stop and then working them all... Na not buying that one tiny bit.

Why’s that so hard too work out ferrets round rabbits into stop ends of the terrier runs them the. Same way pushing them into the same end then it os working them all I don’t get why you think this os such a myth it seems pretty simple too me

Apart from obviously gardening. Is an estate gardener given any other duties. Does he have to learn various other skills to help gamekeepers, farmers, etc when manpower is low?

What sort of skills should one learn to get in to this sort of life as a estate gardener etc.

It is what it is, if the keeper likes you he might ask for help same for the others but if it’s a gardener your going too be that’s exactly what you will be

I just like to say a massive thank you to FH, he very kindly said he would come with me for a bit of buck stalking, so we arrange to meet and have an evening at the sheep farm

on arrival the weather wasn’t good, windy and cool, but we pressed on, a steady walk around the field and ending up at a spot where I’d seen them in the past, as the rain started it was looking like an early bath when he glassed the doe in the corn with a buck in tow, moving into position the buck heading towards cover, as it stopped I got to take the shot, after retrieving the beast he took the time to show me the right way to do things, I’ve learned a lot tonight, top man ???

My ole man taught me to hunt, then died, the selfish fcuker? uncles, an Grandad’s tried to make time for us but after we got the taste for it, it was all we wanted to do an usually ended up with a rag tag bunch a trampy wee boys out with borrowed dogs, harassing anything an everything truth be told. Wasn’t until I was about 14 an goin off rails badly that a guy who lived up street from us knew I knew a bit about nature an stuff am offered to take me bird watching ??anyways few times a week for a few years an I was still a naughty wee cnut but Nowhere near the path I was going down, but that’s what made me appreciate nature an have had a healthy respect for it ever since.

kinda forgot me way a while back an it was all about numbers, surrounded by rabbits my kitchen was like a booze free pub most weekends with guys coming from all over to come lamp, but after having rabbit fever for a while again, an ole boy said to me at work one day, killing everything you can when you can don’t make you a hunter lad, it makes you a killer, now I’d rather have a few good days oot  with kids an mutts than one good day trying to get as many  as I could? still partial to the ole, one more slip an we call it a night, or, okay just try this one last field ?

Sound like the same as me mate not long turned 30 stil enjoy hunting the dogs and shooting but if we get a run and it gets away so be it when I was a kid I’d have been broken if my dog missed haha, I still take plenty of pests all year round but it is nice too watch it sometimes too

a new  lovely wife and daughter I gave up my guns to take up fishing doing a lot of pike and carp fishing around Derbyshire

I missed the action of pigeon shooting and lamping so I put in for my fac about 8 weeks ago still waiting  and its been hard work

looking after my dads lake I just cant wait to get out shooting and put pics on and some fishing pics from the local lakes I fish

Yep life does get in the way sometimes but if it’s in you you'll always find your way back to hunting

  10. So come on lads what’s your thoughts personally I don’t think there out there I feel like all the hours I have spent out in the field I’d have seen tracks or something on the thermal of a night ect I believe there where a few when the laws came in about dangerous animals as people would have most definitely let some free, just wandering what you all think of it as it’s in the media every now and again just an topic of conversation that does interest me

Sounds fair mate ?? How long do they get walked for?

I think in the season a dog worked hard benefits from a few days off in-between.

My spaniel did a full day beating the other week he was knackered for few days afterwards I didn’t do much with him for few days it wasn’t until a good 3 days after he was his usual self nagging me to go out.

A full day so you normally only go for half then? My two spaniels are indoors but have had them in kennels and crate trained them from young so if I ever wanted too put them out it wouldn’t be a problem, I don’t think being in a kennel or house makes a good hunting dog that’s down too the work you put in as an owner most dogs will hunt but too hunt controlled is a different ball game

One was about 18 months and the other was older neither was rushed neither worked sore both in good condition. they just didn’t want it and were shite simple as.

Odd too have two dogs not wanting it normally brings out some competition have you have them a Fox too rag etc if they don’t know you want them too kill them they could be running along. Side another dog for all they know

Had a nightmare with this last summer. As said it’s breaking the cycle. Ours were coming from the hedgehogs in the garden. They were riddled in them. There’s a tablet that you can get from the vet and it will stop fleas and ticks going on the dogs. Not cheap though and you are supposed to give every few months. Probably worth it though if you add up all your cleaning time and hassle. It’s the eggs that are the problem. They lay dormant for up to a year.

Mate I have the same problem with hedgehogs the cats play with them in the garden get flea give them the dogs then cost about £80 for flea treatment for all the pets this has been going on for the past two years every 3 months I have too treat the dogs even the winter when they normally slow down it’s been the same
