  1. Thats a thing thats worrying me ive loads of snares and since the law changed ive been putting crimps on a few at time six inches from the eyelet ,but its a long slow job and given half a chance i can always find something else to do , So could i be charged with having these snares in my possession till i get round to fixing them even if im no using them ,If thats the cause id be better ditching them and starting from scratch again ?.

send em to me ill have em  you cannot have locking fox snares in your posession now under scottish law, therefore if its only rabbit snaresthere is no problem ,as long as you don,set them without a stop just use the ones that you have stops on them and keep adding stops to the others until they have all been fitted with stops, the scottish government recommends that all stops on rabbit snares are set at 5 inches.which is far to small, i crimped 1500 stops one to every pegged snare at 6inches along with a breakaway system to every snare, i can understand how you feel i did a 100 every night until the job was completed, i notified the government recommending the 6 inch stop loop is more humane, and improves animal welfare one hundred percent, because the average rabbits in certain areas now are bordering up to 5 and 6 lbs in weight, hence, the larger stop loop, which effectively holds small, 1/2, 3/4 grown, and fully grown rabbits with relative ease, any trauma that used to be caused by the old snares with no stops on them, has now been totally eliminated 100 percent, also rabbit snares set in higher grass that makes an accidental catch of a hare ,allows the hare to escape freeing itself with my breakaway system i devised, although a breakaway system is recommended its not compulsory at this moment in time. using a 6 inch stop loop without a breakaway system still allows large brown hares to be released alive and well without any harm, where as a 5 inch stop loop kills them. woodga, was testing rabbit snares with the 6 inch stop loop without b/a systems and ten hares were caught all were photographed and then released unharmed, the scottish government now has these A4 size colour pictures in their posession.

  2. Thats tidy going, how many did you lay down to account for the 70 Ian?

Like the way you paint the peg tops red, do you still use markers as well or just rely on the tops?

Snaring is a great way to get the kids interested, its very hands on and they can see the fruit of their labours up close.

Probably had around 40 peg snares, 10 fence snares and 10 fenns out mate... over 3 days, had around the 90 mark.

Them pegs are easier to see in shorter grass, you can use them without markers.. I tend to just set the pegs in lines 20 yards out from the hedgelines, so you walk along picking them up, easily without losing track..

ian,and every prowlerwill pick them up real easy also,
  3. Only the Aldrich Spring Activated Animal Snare is licensed and this can be used "only for the purpose of killing or taking large, non-indigenous,

    mammalian carnivores".

    http://www.solwayfee...p2805-c416.html

It would appear that solway feeders are selling these illegally then??

Although the Collarum is not yet approved in Scotland there is nothing to stop them selling it as long as it was not used by there Scottish based customers.

IAN, IS THAT SNARELOCK ON THE COLLARUM SNARE LOOP A SURELOCK, IF SO ITS ILLEGAL IN U.K. ALSO, AT 100 POUNDS A GO , EXTORSION,ALSO WHO THE HELL WANTS TO BE DIGGING THIS CONTRAPTION INTO HARD FREEZING GROUND IN WINTER, WHEN I CAN SET A 25 PENCE FOX SNARE OVER A TRAIL AND BE GONE IN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES. AND IF YOUR COLLARUM IS NICKED YOUR WELL OUT OF POCKET LAD.

  4. NICE TO SEE WOODGA MATE :victory: ,

THE FIRST ANIMAL I EVER SAW CAUGHT IN A SNARE SET BY A OLD FELLA THAT TOOK ME OUT HUNTING AS A KID WITH HIS MONGROL WAS A HARE ...... HE HUNTED FOR FOOD JUST AS HE HAD TO DO AS A HUNGRY KID IN THE BLEAK THIRTYS , OFTEN FEEDING HIS FAMILY WITH A FEW COPPER SNARES .....

THERES A WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUNTING FOR FOOD / PEST CONTROL AND HUNTING FOR SPORT

    MANY NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

ALL THE BEST i know who that old poacher was, D.R. AM I RIGHT BIG FELLA.

  5. There are several options available for use with fenns.....either use a nice wooden peg attached onto the split ring or a similar wooden stake thats driven through the center of the ring itself, you also have the option of using steel trap pegs and extentions (available from fourteenacre) There initial purchase price can be a little off putting but they were designed for the job and will last a lifetime under normal use.I dont like paracord as its easily chewed through and straining wire is to ridgid to match the natural contours.....atb

what ia wrong with using a simple 4mil.snap link on the trap ring and just click it onto the fence in 1 second, also just bend a 16 inch length of 4 mil.wire into a tight U shape and push it down into the ground like i showed on site with the rabbit snares without pegs, it holds big winter rabbits and big winter dog mink, no problem.

  6. nothing is written in stone in the snaring game......so always be ready to adapt to any situation.

    Rolfe.

Agree rolfe, if it works use it,... I've snared rabbits in fox snares set 10" off the floor with no long grass around... I've seen rabbits jump straight through fence snares, pegangun recorded this happening also... Nothing is truely set in stone...

ian, thats correct, i have witnessed this myself rabbits going through fence wires many years ago, the problem is very simple to solve.thanks for the phone call last monday. i,ll give you a buzz shortly, woodga snared 96 the other morning 73 in hoop snares and the rest in fence snares . the keeper thought he wouldn,t catch many at the height he was setting with the big loop, but couldn,t beleive his eyes in the morning, the keeper said that he set the old traditional way, 4inch loop and about a fist high and caught around a dozen with dozens of tripped wires. so woodga showed him how to snare properly, the keeper now wants a hundred pegged snares, by the way have you seen the big yin lately, i,ve got something for him , i,ll post it to you to give him.take care snareman.

  7. WELL IAN ,

WE KNOW ITS NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT THE BEST NIGHTS FOR A GOOD KILL OF CONYS ARE THE BEST NIGHTS FOR LAMPING !

DARK AND SCENTLESS ....... BOTH OPTIONS COVERED !!

MANY RABBITS OUT DAYLIGHT FEEDING IN SHORTER GRASS , HAVENT THE SAME AMOUNT OF ALERTNESS [ IF THATS THE RIGHT WORD FOR IT ]AS HE CAN SEE AROUND HIMSELF FOR DANGER , ... NO SHORT SPURTS . OR MAD DASHES AT THE SLIGHTEST SOUND ,....

THESE TO ME ARE THE RABBITS THAT WILL SHY AWAY FROM THE SHINY OR SCENT RIDDEN SNARE ......IVE SEEN A FEW MYSELF

ONE IN PARTICULAR LAST SEASON I WATCHED STOP DEAD AND JUMP AROUND A PEGGED SNARE ON A GOOD RUN ...... ONLY TO GET CAUGHT ON THE SAME RUN 30 YDS DOWN THE LINE ,.....

BOTH SNARES WERE THE SAME AND WERE WEATHERED THROUGH WORK , THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THE SCENT FACTOR ........

    ALL THE BEST

    DUCKWING

duckwing, you are right its the scent that causes them to avoid a pegged snare, even a fenceline snare, there is another couple of problem with fenceline snares, but i,ll tell you on the phone, all about it, as for fox snares, when you have carried out extensive snaring, for many decades, in every type of inclement weather, like i have, you find out many various types of problems the average, run of the mill guys will never know about snares . yes,you will catch many foxes in new shiny snares as i have done myself on many occasions, but there are times they won,t catch, and that is a true fact and i learned this from hard experience, there are a three different occasions you won,t get them. anyway take care and happy snaring
  8. that first rabbit must of been a big un juding buy the sise of that metal hoop you brayed in lol shame about your camera though but still you enjoyed yourself thats what counts and you didnt blank either so all in all a result nice one :notworthy:

colin, got the pictures of the hares you sent that 6 inch stop loop is good as all ten were released , snared rabbits this morning , had a problem with a fox, when skinning the rabbits later i noticed that the inside of the pelts were pure white like winter pelts, not bluish like they are normally at this time of the year, once again the 6 inch stop loops work great on them eliminatingany trauma around the head. there are around 150 snares on tealers here for you, you will have to put the twined pegs on yourself. been busy with the new keeper, catching lots of magies, and crows in the larsons we have had over a hundred greys, in kanias and cage traps, let me know when you are collecting the snares,

  9. I think I'm out of favour with Bell after my very rude comments about this monstrosity at Pestech last year.

At around £15 each, they are not cheap either. Get ready to see dozens tossed to one side on garden jobs.............

matt, you would need an elephant and forty troopers to carry a dozen of those monstrosities, the british have developed the best mole traps in the world, and we also have the best mole trappers, you would need wimpy to dig those into the ground, its most obvious that whoever devised it knows nothing about mole trapping, i could just imagine wayne, and old bob merrins having to use these.
  10. ihave snared many a location like that one in the picture micky, on exactly the same type of morning brrr. it brings back many memories, the days before were fine and mild for setting them out, and a hard white frost would creep in in the early morning hours, the ground up here is still solid, and snow still lying in areas, are you keeping well, snareman.

  11. WELL CHALKIE ,

I MUST ADMIT IVE BEEN USING PANS FOR THE BODYGRIPS .... ON A SUCESSFUL MINK LINE THIS YEAR

HOWEVER I MUCH PREFER THE TRIGGER WIRES ON BODYGRIPPERS FOR MINK , [ SOME SITUATIONS CALL FOR A TRACE WIRE ] ....... FOR RATS.... WELL..... NO DOUBT SOME OF YOU GUYS HAVE A LOT MORE DIVERSE SITUATIONS TO TRAP THAN ME WITH MY GREEN HILLS AND VALLEYS :D

HOWEVER IN THE FEW I HAVE TRAPPED IN THE URBAN SPRAWL I MUST ADMIT I HAVE NEVER FAILED WITH THE MODIFIED VICTOR OF OLD G.W.s .. AND THEY CERTAINLY PACK A WOLLOP , NOT ONE EVEN LOOKS LIKED ITS KICKED A LEG !

IVE USED BOTH PLY TREADLES [ WHICH WORK VERY WELL AND THE MINK SEEM TO PREFER UNDERFOOT ] AND BELIVE IT OR NOT THE ABSOLUTE CLONE OF HOLDAWAYS TREADLE ...... I GET THESE FROM A LOCAL ELECTRICAL COMPONANT MANUFACTURER WHICH ARE SPRING STEEL ... I GOT THE IDEA AFTER SEEING WOODGAS HOME MADE SQUIRREL CATCH ALIVE TRAPS LOCKING DEVISE

ALL THE BEST as duckwing says the wooden pan is excellent, iwas shown this method 20 yrs ago in B C canada from my pro. trapper mate peter,he was using them on 120 conibears and i used them over here and the mink were well suitcased with a double strike everytime, and were lying stone dead at the tunnel or hole entrance, the half circle trigger shape is also good with a double strand of rabbit snarewire ,they can see through the triggers and i never ever had a problem taking mink or rabbits with them, and ive certainly trapped enough of them. sometimes the the steel prongs can cause avoidance at times the same when trapping marten, but there is a very simple trick to correct this.on the bigger 330s the steel triggers can cause wolverine to avoid the trap, once again easy to rectify.good to see you are trying different ideas.snareman.

  12. Hello, could anyone offer some advice or links on loading / tensioning rabbit snares.

I have read the G.S Waters articles pinned but i am still not 100% sure, it just seems to take me so long to do one.

I am sure there are a few methods that people use and i would be very greatfull if you can help me out

    Darren

g s waters here, there is a friend of mine showing how to tension a rannit snare, on you tube, he is called danny sumpter, also ian b who runs this site he also shows it done, hope this helps you.
  13. Has anyone with any experience with using the Collarum trap got any feedback on its performance in the field?

PM me if you don't want to post on the open forum - but I would be interested to hear what you have to say

    OTC

OTC, afriend of mine in england was sent two of these snares from his amaerican trapper friend, who had them hanging in his trap shed. he certainly was not impressed by them.hence they were sent over here, free to a good home, my friend just passed them on to another couple guys , you can,t beat a simple wire noose set over an open trail, but for the guys who like digging , give them a try, but it certainly won,t be me.
  14. 8 strand tow ropes if they can sell them iv got a chance to sell mine  rob are you sure you did not set that loop :p goodhunting all woodga

woodga, they are a copy of old andy,s snares, and once again, for the thousandth time who the hell needs an eight strand snare ,or even a ten strand one, will they never ever learn.
  15. Hi

Just wondered if anyone had heard, or even tried an alternative to brass snares, one which doesnt bend and tangle so much? :D

    Thanks

hi, this year ive been yousing 1mm 7x7 galvinised wire and have found it excelent for snaring rabbits it doesnt tangle and twist ike brass and foxes dont break it when they scank your rabbits well worth trying

you still can,t beat the brass wire, for cost, versatility, its also very pliable and strong when spun up firmly, thats how all the pro. trappers use it for pegged snaring out on open runs, the foxes may pull the rabbit carcase from the wires at times and leave the heads, but they don,t break the wires, and a simple double knot , acts as a simple ingenios swivel system, the americans use 7x7 for their rabbit and snowshoe hares, but there aremany of them changing to our way of snaring , where up to 30 rabbits can be taken with one of our style pegged snares, which can,t be done with aircraft wire, but when push comes to shove, any wire if strong and pliable enough will do, but we are trying to keep it legal, and release non target species. especially prowling house cats, thats why i devised new breakaway rabbit snares which also totally eliminates woodland deer which are accidently foot snared from losing a foot through necrosis, all trauma around snared rabbits heads has also been totally eliminated,
  16. Cheers rod&dog, i used the search bit but after checking every thread for 4 pages...it stared to wear a bit thin. i think i might try it...but better not work to well...i still wanna have some sport with the .410
go to the pinned section at the top of the first page and it will show you the drawings and info.i have put up on snaring squirrels.

Glenn what size loop would you recommend about 3 inches?

    Cheers

    Roy

have you not read the print and seen the drawings i put up on the pinned section on squirrel snaring the loop is 4 inches ,height 4 1/2 inches high to bottom of the loop.
  17. I worked on the Isle of Tiree (Inner Hebrides) many years ago!! and was asked more than once by Islanders who were crofters if I would help remove/control otters that were decimating their free range hens. letting the otters go about their business and concentrating on foxes is a wise move ;) the have full protection and its not worth the hassle ;)

    Tom

its a good job it wasn,t my hens they had eaten,
  18. Well i went out with phil today to cut some ash up as there's loads about on the estate  , the pic shows what we got this morning it look's like he got plenty of work for himself,i had to go with him just incase he struggled lifting the blocks of ash in the car as he's getting on now :D
somebody must have felled that ash and cut it into logs for him. as he doesn,t have the experience to pick out quality ash like that , he should really send those logs up to me or collin , as we really know what to do with them.still, if the lad neads a helping hand im sure we could go down and help him. for a half share.
  19. Fecking Rain :censored::censored:

Looks like it is drying up but the wind has dropped hear.If that wind gets up a bit ill go do a couple of local drops are you up for it caterpiller.

Wat set up are you using mate and ill try give you a couple of pointers ....P&G

better get your wellies on sonny .
  20. Peg you must set your poles on your net quite close when your expecting big bags like that in 100yrd nets? I used a 100yrd last year and thought because the fibreglass poles I had where so strong I would get away with 8 yards, the net set ok, But when I got more than one rabbit in a section, they pulled the top line to the ground, making it low enough for others to get over

I know wat you mean Fat ferret but no all my nets are set on poles 8yards apart and tied in every two yards the way old SNAREMAN designed the system many years ago.The secret to taking big numbers in your 100 yard nets is your 1st and last poles. If you make sure they are set properly the rest of the net will stand up to large numbers of rabbits. On the last drop me and my son done the other night there was 8 rabbits caught between two poles and that happens regularly. You can use ancher pins if you want but i find it unnessesery if you set the net correctly....P&G

when big willie and i come down to stay , we don,t want to be eating rabbits every day lad.
  21. you must having been watching me :D see they do work nice place that p after the hedge is cut set again ;)
colin, thought i had seen those pegged snares before, the lucky barsteward. i could have murdered hares on those runs all along that hedge, reminds me when we were up at tom,s in the borders with rob sharpe.
  22. Bloody hell micky there must be a bit of a fox problem there,or you are just unlucky :D .

Next rabbit you catch, take a rabbits foot for your self and see if your luck changes

T P , this land is alongside the M 1,the foxs have a nice safe walk into the cityalong the embankments,if the weather is dry they can go under the motorway through the culverts, also ,theres a big poultry place nearby and that draws them in,this time of the year theres allways lots of dead pidgeons in the fields ,so thats another easy feed for them.

set up a few fox wires mickey, my friend martin, who lives in england set up 40 fox wires , snared 9 foxes in 4 days, then snared 400 rabbits , in five days . with no fox damage whatsoever.
