nonsense, he needs to go study wolves a bit more as they do not do that to a six week old pup

please don't listen to this tit! all it works to do is scare a pup ,, Maybe he should stop imagining FFS I can't

believe I just wasted my time listening to him! We are no not actually living in the wild ,,,

Why can't you walk dogs in the dark? I work full time and walk the dogs for a couple of hours when I get home, and a shorter walk before. Not sure what the problem is with the dark?

I do walk them in dark who said there was a problem

so what are you asking? how do we walk the dogs working full time as it is dark? We walk them in the dark the same as we walk them in the daylight?

Yeah a walk in the dark is a walk in the dark hardly a mooch isit?? Which is what mine are used to ,and pup thats on at minute would be gone in a sec also not into the habit of lettin the pup off of the lead hunting up in the dark not smart idea isit clever chap

you can't walk your dogs off lead in the dark? I have 8 who are off lead running in the dark . We walk the same daylight or not. I never had problems with pups or adult rescues in the dark. I guess its all in the training clever chap?

spookster has had saluki breed and saluki xs based lurchers for longer than you been alive mushroom , most them dogs a lot of muppets f**k up and dump at the side of the road end up with her and she has turned these dogs around to give them a happy and healthy life show a small bit of respect

Not a sniff Charlie boy when someone presumes to put words in my mouth ;)

I "presumed to put words into your mouth" ???? you said to try the method not sure if it would work...did you not? it is a crap method for training dogs and you advised the guy to try it...I did not put those words into your mouth..Breaking dogs is not a method I would use so would therefore not put such such words into any ones mouth!

  5.

Bollocks! A dog that gets broken isn't necessarily unhappy at all ;)

I am confused, why would any living animal..humans included, be happy to be "broken"

I see you haven't explained the methods you use to "break a dog". Maybe best you keep it to

    yourself

don't be a tit mate some gundog trainers used to use their methods to break exceptionally stuborn dogs with great results ;) me on the otherhand I don't need to, I'm pretty good when it comes to training dogs ;)

I am the tit? Cause I don't need to "break dogs" I have seen some clips of gundog trainers..abuse it is and I wouldn't give them a hamster to take care of.... I am afraid I am thinking the person who thinks because some gundogs trainers use this method it is going to work to teach a saluki recall may be the one being the tit. I will try and find the clip of the gundog trainer that made its rounds on fb...the guy was proud of himself for bullying and abusing a spaniel. Brute force and ignorance. I guess you and I live in two different worlds...I obviously have different standards...

From what I have seen you don't have much support with your breaking advice on this thread?

And there you go being a tit ;)

most on here know I was only offering as a suggestion and not actually advocating it. You on the other hand are all over it like a dose of herpes.

    Peace x

by suggesting it you are advocating it....just saying!

  7.

Unless I knew someone I would be going down the PTS route. Have you tried breaking her?? It's a process I'm not sure a Sal would take well but it works on some dogs.

no, don't it would be one unhappy dog.breaking her says it all.

thinking PTS would be preferable to "breaking her" ..............

  8. People have to take some responsibility and not just blame the dog I feel sorry for the dog, lead walked and left in pen.

I have 8 rescue dogs, no downward spiral for them. The have a great life. I had to start all over on recall with some, as they

were worried to come back due to adverse training, ie physical punishment or e collars. If he cares for the dog

and he seems to then he has to find somewhere for the dog that people are able to work with her. I have a saluki

here who came to me at a year old. Her recall was terrible and she wouldn't come back, because of the reasons I

mentioned above. Her recall was coming good in no time and then she broke her leg. Two operations and a year later I had to

start over with her recall. Especially as she didn't want the fine to end, only short walks to start with. A year later and

her recall is pretty good. I will never understand having a healthy dog pts because people have failed them. No I am not suggesting

free ads. I do believe there are worse fates then death, but if a dog was not working out with me then it would be my responsibility

to find the right home for the dog. I don't view dogs as disposable. Maybe get in touch with a good rescue like Lurcher LInk

when they have space they may take her in and find her the right home?

  9. Yeah you're right about the general vets they didn't have a clue! She [bANNED TEXT] up to the royal vet college and that's where the diagnosis was made pal! What was your steps of getting weight back on the dog?

My salukis also had Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I know a lot of people help these foods but I am sure it saved her life. She was on Royal Canin Sensitivity control. http://about.royalcanin.co.uk/catalogue/canine-veterinary-diet/sensitivity-control-sc-2123727/ How is the dog doing?

  10. Yes she dropped a lot of weight. I am not surprised his dog is a saluki. Autoimmune diseases are a problem in salukis from what I have seen.

I recommend your friend asks for a referral to an internal medicine vet as this conditions needs careful management and

general vets do not have enough experience with these conditions. I take it the vet made this diagnosis through join taps?

  11. I had a Saluki with Immune mediated polyarthritis. She doesn't need to be put down but does require careful monitoring.

My dog also required another drug called Azothioprine. Normally you start the drugs at a high level and very very slowly wean them

off, hoping the dogs immune system works normally and stops attacking the dogs own body. Dogs do go into remission but it can flare up again.

Sorry to hear this, autoimmune conditions seem to becoming more common in dogs. I think it is down to breeding, in breeding, line breeding. People really do need to look at what they are breeding as so many dogs are suffering.

  12. Here is text book discription of Rickets "Rickets is a softening of bones in immature mammals due to deficiency or impaired metabolism of vitamin D,[1] phosphorus or calcium,[2] potentially leading to fractures and deformity. Rickets is among the most frequent childhood diseases in many developing countries. The predominant cause is avitamin D deficiency, but lack of adequate calcium in the diet may also lead to rickets (cases of severe diarrhea and vomiting may be the cause of the deficiency). Although it can occur in adults, the majority of cases occur in children suffering from severe malnutrition, usually resulting from famine or starvation during the early stages of childhood."

this is in people, but will be the same..." usually resulting from famine or starvation during the early stages of childhood."

people who are raising these pups and this condition occurring really should have a good look at themselves and never ever breed another litter of pups!

It really should not happen and if people can't afford to feed the bitch and the pups they should not be breeding to sell pups and make money/

  13. I have just read this thread from start to finish. I just want to say that all the dogs in this thread are a credit to all of you.

I have enjoyed this thread more then any on here. I have a lot of salukis and saluki x's, my dogs are all rescues, dogs that

have been mistreated, harshly handled, fed crap and neglected. I wish everyone who bought a coursing dog (or any dog in fact)

took such pride in them as all of you do. The dogs always look fit and happy and great to see them progressing in life!

  14. So what do you do in the following situations.

You are walking with your three month old Saluki pup amongst sheep. They suddenly decide to leg it. Your pup looks interested and strains on the lead. He gets beside himself with excitement when his eye is drawn towards a straggler with foot rot. All his instincts are screaming at him to hunt down the weakest in the flock. By this time he is jumping up and down on the lead like a kangaroo. If it were my dog I would give several sharp tugs on the lead and shout 'no'! I would do this every opportunity I had until he wouldn't even look at sheep.

What would you Saluki lads do?

Secondly, your nine month old pup is off the lead and is inspecting some rabbit holes. You whistle him up. He knows that the whistle means to return to you because you've been rewarding him with treats and praise every time he has returned on command for the last few months. He ignores you.

I would run back to him and bollock him. For the rest of the walk I would let him go ten or twenty yards in front of me, whistle him, get down on my haunches and give him lots of praise when he returned. In other words, the carrot and stick principle. What would you saluki lads do if your pup failed to return when told?

I'm not looking for an argument, I want to learn how you saluki lads rub along with your dogs.

Three month old saluki pups instinct screaming at him to hunt?? I have never seen such a young pups instinct kick in to hunt. But I do live in learn.

I am also not so power hungry that when i say jump my dog asks how hi. I let him/her have a sniff

  15. Yeah bigthug, i get my carcasses from a major poultry processor in Penrith which is getting a wee tad expensive. The lamb i get off a pal for free, but have to do a 40 mile all round trip, but it`s` great in winter for keeping the weight on dogs.

Spookster it looks abit pricey the place at Durham for feeding my pack of dogs especially by the time the diesel`s gone in the wagon.

I can tell you i`ve been on the verge of starting to feed the dry food crap again !!!!!!!! but could`nt stand the quantity of crap that comes out the other end and the smell !! Plus the water bill will go sky high with the amount of extra drinking water not to mention the effect on the dogs work rate. It`s just one big bag of dehydration.

    Cheers.

They do deliver if that would save some petrol?
