  1. Gentlemen....Canada geese were not put on the pest list for nothing...they are causing localised agricultural and more importantly ecological disruption in some areas...their numbers are increasing and current levels of shooting on the residents in the UK is far from reaching any "national" disgrace.....

So assuming they are going to be eaten....why not. The whole point about shooting Canda geese, Grey squirrels etc etc is to reduce their numbers!

Ethics is a funny game...I would throw my toys out of the pram if that was Icelandic greys but not resident greys!

  2. The 1370 Bar is no american thing and IS the pressure proof for using High Performance steel.

If your gun has the Fluer de Lys mark then it is proofed to 1370 BAR by the British proof houses and steel shot proof. If in doubt contact Roger at the Birmingham proof house.

The pressure tests in the US are different to those here (crusher vs ???)

Anyway...I wonder if the 1200 bar value you can see is the american or makers mark.

For guns....the pressure proof for 3" and 3.5" chambers are the same. Carts are slightly different.

Again..any doubts go straight to Edgar brothers or the proof house

  3. plenty local Mallard on the lower humber...all still in moult.....difficult to decoy on this new patch of large water I am hunting. A few local teal as well. No migrants seen. Fowsands on GP's got three yesterday while waiting for high tide.....then I could not hit a barn door with a banjo if I tried. A mix of my poor shooting..strong gusts and lots of sods law..like my mate being in the decoys when 20 mallard pitched in....meant I got zero duck for 9 shots (3*3).

The challenge is on then...back out there in early October on next big tides.

  4. As I understand it the law states that lead cannot be used to waterfowl......

This includes Canada geese in E&W according to the DEFRA website....

Dont know about firearms exclusions. Simple answer is to ask the legal team of any sporting organistion you or your friends are a member of...

My main thought is that you could only use the rifle under licence for that purpose as whether they are an agricultural pest or not it is my understanding that the legislation only allows them to be taken by a smooth bored gun... not at all sure though

  5. 1/2 choke is fine up to 4mm steel, then there are some concerns in older foxed choked guns.

All the pressure info for steel proofing is available from the BPH, BASC and usually online or from gunsmiths.

There are lots of suitable 70mm steel rounds. Shot size is far more important than large pellet counts.

A 32-34 gram load of 3.6mm steel will kill all ducks at various ranges. Smaller shot is more suitable if you are mainly hunting at closer ranges or smaller ducks.

But for reference, if you meant to hit the cormorant in the head then you want to think about a different steel pellet size than if you are aiming to hit the lower neck/upper body area. Unfortunately these variable are important. Also, a head shot is not always a dead bird, it has nothing to do with the steel mate...it is always nice to have excuses when shooting...but that steel is crap aint one of them

It may help you if you do some digging on the net on articles by Tom Roster and also, if you are a member, call on BASC research for help.

  6. The question here is not of proof marks alone...but the age of your gun

Steel proof only comes from the chamber pressure and lack of sightings of any damage from "one" over-pressurised steel cart fired down the barrel

Older barrels made from softer steel will suffer from harder shot, even with a plastic wad

First of all...you aint used steel but you think it is crap...Hmmm

I and others shoot loads of steel rounds on duck and geese without any issues...indeed I would say that I think more about what I am shootingand at what range now than I did in the lead era and hence I have less wounding losses.

But you can only use Standard steel loads in your gun....not the High Performance ones.

Second....if you choose not to use steel then you can use Bismuth and I think ITM as well without restrictions (check with Gamebore or BASC directly not your Gunsmith as in my experience most dont know much about non-lead ammo).

Bismuth is great on Ducks within reasonable ranges but I never found it to be effective in larger shot sizes (mainly cos I could never find any in stock).

Finally, Hevishot Classic Doubles might bet the thing for you which is designed for older sporting guns but I am not sure if it is being loaded by the UK stockist (Lyalvale), speak to them directly.

Overall my recommendation would be to leave the English gun in the cabinet and invest in a steel proofed gun for wildfowl hunting, a second hand semi is probably the most practical (£300 new for an Escort semi) or...most recent O/U come as 3" chambered steel proof (£500sh). Lead-free is the future so you might as well invest now!

  7. Yes it's legal...and if you dig out a general licence you can also "cull" them at any time of year if they are causing agricultural damage. You of course need permission from the landowner where they are causing that damage...and you cant shoot them on the "foreshore" under the general licence.

I am not sure of the details but it "should" be clear from the general licence

  8. Well that is not quite true.... two are the same

I may be well behind on this...I probably am.... but I have just confirmed that both Hull and Gamebore are loading US shot sizes...so when you buy a 3 from their steel range it is 3.6mm and 3.57mm diameter respectively while Lyalvale are loading in UK sizes so their steel 3's are 3.2mm diameter (just below a US 4).

It is the same for their other sizes

Of course it matter not as long as you match the shot size with the job in hand....but I expect that not everyone knows that the three Uk companies sell the same sized shot but in different shot sizes...confused..so was I

Maybe time we all speak...as I have seen some on here doing allready.....in steel shot diameter rather than sizes

    Best

  9. Well whatever the amount it is dealt with now.

That large and perhaps "excessive" bags are taken all over orkney just now due to the shortstopping behaviour is one thing, the overall kill of the geese in the UK may be falling as the greys are not moving on from Orkney to the mainland.

Not sure I have heard of Canada's being on Orkney in any great numbers at all?

Anyway. Thankyou warmbarrells for for correcting that error

    Bets wishes

  10. havent been since opening day wich i think was the 26th of last mouth. but we got 27 between 3 of us and teal and blackies was the 2 we got. well baged out :)

good shooting, sounds like a bag from an inland splash/lake

What species of teal are they?

    T

  11. NO there is NOT a minimal age for a SGC. Dont spread shit about the laws unless you are sure about them.

More like dont listen to You. Make sure you know the law before you go saying stuff about it, you could get some one in trouble

Can we all calm down please?

    Lets look at the facts

    http://www.basc.org.uk/en/utilities/docume...2B8C3A18D1BAAA2

There is no legal minimun for the certificate (see above). I thought it was 2 years old but apparently this was recently fought and won in the courts so that there is now no legal minimum.

But there is a legal minimum age for an independent application. In other words, you cannot buy a shotgun or ammo before you are 17 and therefore you need parental of legal gaurdian permission under that age. I believe this is in the signatory part of the application (Part E).

The next thing you need to check if whether the officer will want evidence of permission for you to keep the firearms locked at the house you reside in if you do not own the property. If he does not check this he is not doing his job properly! This will be helped if someone else in your household allready has a certificate/cabinet etc etc, but you did not say this.

I recommend you get such permission in writing anyway and show that you are taking leadership on the issue (in addition to the ideas I told you earlier)

Lastly. A conviction is NEVER spent in terms of firearms law and you must list all current and spent and previous convictions (ususally "normal" speeding fines/points are exempt).

Therefore perhaps we could conclude this listing with saying that we all need to read the above document (myself included). And that Andy should apply now if he is 17, but include a parental support letter, a letter of support from his cosignatory (it is not necessary but it is great if that cosig is a shooting man/woman and proof of some regular club attendance etc etc. These will help you but you dont have to do it legally. But then because of your past the police have a right to refuse your application.

  12. so bacicly i could apply tomorrow as long as it's in a parants house and have parents consent?

*edit* and does that apply for the UK?

    1. Yes, but get someone to spell check your application for you

    2. Yes

    3. But it also applies that you can only shoot with another cert holder who is over (21/17?not sure) until you are 17. That applies whether you have your own weapon or not.

    4. As many have said before on similar threads, conviction aside, are you a member of a shooting/clays/hunting club. If not then join one, it looks good on your application if you have made such an effort and have insurance, not that it is a requirement. Do you have mentors, again not a requirement but it is good to discuss this with the officer (i.e. who are you going to be shooting with).

    5. Archie. You brought up the comment on minimum age, not me. There is minimum age.

    6. iamdurvern. Who made you the judge and jury, no-one. He who casts the first stone and all that. You can be deemed irresponsible for licence ownership based on a few speeding fines. I agree with you that being convicted for ABH is not a good precendent. I hope it is in the past and he has matured a bit since then. I wish him best of luck for his behaviour in the future. Afterall we are all judge by each others behaviour!

    Best of luck

  13. why are you waiting until august ? there is no minimum age for a shotgun license

There is if you are applying without your parents consent. You cant buy a gun or cartridges until 17, but he can have a gun gifted to him if he has a licence under the age of 17.

Otherwise a 10 year old could apply for a licence and buy a gun without telling Mum!

At 17 you can apply for a licence and keep at your parents (or any) home with their permission, unless you have your own property. You can then also buy, swap and sell guns on that licence.

  14. So I found this gun. A Hubertus XL90 in three different shops. But I cant find anything about it, I think because it is actually a Zabala XL90.

It is a 30" 3" magnum multichoked with HP steel proofing (EU and not UK cert). For under £500 new that is a bargain.

So I think it is a zabala, which gives me confidence. Someone said they got them from a german wholesaler, but not that it was a zabala? That could mean that the wholesaler bought the zabala's and sold them under a different name.

It is for a friend of mine for his first gun for clays, pigeons but most importantly fowling. Therefore with the HP steel proofing for 3" HP steel shells and 30" barrells I want to say buy this instead of a non HP proof second hand gun.

    Anyone tried one?

  15. Gentlemen. Never listen to hearsay, find out about it. All the general licence details are really easy to find online and from what I can see none of them say anything about using electronic calls for shooting pest species, only that they are banned in traps for live catching.

As I said, if in doubt, act the only guys who know there stuff, the BASC legal teams

The electronic calling crow decoys are being sold all over the UK and the dealers I have spoken to say that can be used for shooting.

  16. yeah you can and shoot them with a camera ?

There is nothing listed in the current 2009 general licences in scotland that comments of what can and cannot be used for decoying crows. This includes whether the crows have electronic calls.

    http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Environm...eneral-licences

There is a condition of the habitats and bird directive 2000 that states that you cannot use live recordings or electronic calls for the taking of mammals and game (i.e. huntable species such as pheasants and wild geese/ducks), but this does not include species listed on the "pest" annexes.

You cannot use a live or electronic recording for use in larsen traps though

    http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practic...-pest-birds.cfm

Essentially there are no specific answers but I recently [bANNED TEXT] t crow shooting with an importer of such goods and he got feedback from BASC/SNH/DEFRA that for use in a decoy pattern for shooting crows an electronic caller is not illegal

To confirm email BASC scotland and let us all know what they say!

  17. No thanks to ST, too sensational

plastic as in plastic behaviour, such that if teh winters get cold again they will immediately shift to their previous behaviours (i.e. their short-stopping behaviour is not fixed/evolved)

Apologies. Evolutionary ecology is my profession!

    T

  18. difficult to say mate, have you any ideas of whether they are residents or migratory?

If Icelandic it may be some moving north, back for summer. If they have been there all winter then it is likely this is more evidence of the short stopping behaviour greylags have been showing in recent years. They are not showing as much turnover as they used to and reside in northern areas thanks to milder winters, potentially an adaptive behaviour, maybe plastic. Would like to explore that..........any millionaires fancy funding the work?

  19. Can someone clarify the ban on hunting hares with Dogs?

i thought you could send your dog to kill vermin? Are Hares not Vermin in the case or agri pests?

You cant do it without permission or for sport of course.

If it is illegal you chaps should be very careful as the police have powers to sieze the IP address of users "bragging" about illegal activities!

    T

  20. Why is it when somebody mentions shooting hares the lurcher lads are up in arms about it.You still get 1 for the pot weather its shot coursed or snared. Why is it most people think the only way to catch a hare is with a dog??

    because its fair

Fair, get with the show man. Who cares if it is fair, does that make stalking unfair if they did not see you coming, or fishing unfair if the fish cant tell the fly is an imitation and just fancies it's luck!

Get real. A hare shot is a hare in the pot.

Not that I would, but it could be argued that the stress hormones that go into the meat of a hare that is coursed and caught by a dog make the meat of inferior quality to one that is flushed and shot or stalked.

Just for arguments sake of course!
