  1. Many running dogs used on varied game - hare, Jackal, antelope, pigs.... In Zululand the guys take these dogs so seriously it results in betting/gambling - something being heavily critisized at the moment and most likely to be banned but currently most officials look the other way as it is deemed 'traditional' by the hunters. Most are Zulu or Xosa and crowds of 20 - 50 men each with 1,2,3 + greyhounds or greyhound/bull/hound crosses enter an area and hunt for the day regardless of permission by the owner whether it be private or state It is obviously a conservation nightmare but a cultural
  2. I guess you are refering to the Caracal photo. Caracal are not really dangerous for the hounds as they can weigh +/- 25kg for a male and cannot inflict serious injury to the dogs.We use more than 1 hound as the scent is quite faint and by increasing the No of noses we improve the chances of holding the scent.1 Hound can do the job alone but the voices of many make the hunt.Another reason is the french description that a 'perfect pack' should consist of 6 hounds and each has a certain function.
  3. The Elephant was actually not that big - approx 35yrs old and was a crop raider. It was raiding maize at night in numerous villages around the southern shore of lake Cahorra Bassa in Mozambique and became the responsibility of nature conservation to deal with. They can either kill it themselves or find a Client from 1 of the nearby concessions interested in a non-trophy hunt - which is what occurred here.We shot him at night in the beam of a Maglight as he rests away from the crops in the shade and near water during the day and then steals the crops under cover of darkness. The calorie rich crops
  4. I posted some of hunting in Germany - here is 1 from South africa.
  5. Yes John, We have several provinces and the hunting ordinances vary slightly in each but all is legal - only Leopard & Lion cannot be hunted with hounds unless in the case of a wounded animal. For the Leopard we go to Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Namibia. In the Sheep ranching areas farmers invite hunters to remove Caracal and Jackal and some game farmers pay hunters up to $50 per carcass. In agricultural areas - especially Maize, Sugar cane and Pineapples - Bushpig can cause severe damage and farmers welcome hunters. Hounds have to be really 'game proofed' as nothing enrages a farmer more than
  6. Howzit Lennard, Your reference to Languedoc sent me on a whole new road of discovery - I had not heard of the Gascogny hounds being refered to as this before and found new info through a google search - Baie Dankie Meneer. I see you are based in Netherlands - my father was born in Rotterdam and my Grandfather served as a sailor on the OranjeFontein during the war.Thats how my family found SA. .
  7. Many thanks brothers, check WWW.xosha.eu for more pics and video under the hound Hunting title.
  8. Hi workindogz, I do not know Peter but viewed his site late last year with the report of his SA trip.He stayed with a previous associate of mine -Theunis Botha. He hunted over several of my dogs which I sold to Theunis in Nov 2006.3 females are captured in the photos namely -Lola,Tina and Flea.Kimba,Buster,Ranger,Burner and Spider are in the Leopard pack which he runs. Good dogs - deeply missed. Bushpig hunting in SA is superb and you should definately make the trip. do you hunt Dogo's aswell?
  9. The Gascogny hounds are super to hunt over - they have drive, endless courage and will spend hours baying a boar. The scenting capabilities are excellent which means you don't have to hunt only fresh track or by sight - but they are slow to mature and you only really start to get the best from these hounds at the age of about 3yrs.They can however hunt fully to the age of 12+. Depending on training, injury is seldom. The voices add so much to a hunt! They have good feet and are easy to feed and kennel - can keep many togethur with minimal politics/fighting. Once introduced to the scent of pig
  10. Hello all, May I introduce myself - I am a 31 yr old South African. I hunt Leopard, Caracal and Bushpig with Hounds both for sport and profession.
  11. Zanzibar sounds like a great beach holiday but not currently on a 'wish list' If you plan to come to SA anytime give me some notice and you're welcome to join in the training hunts.
  12. I don't really believe in such big dogs at all, at least not to REAL wild boars like we have in continental Europe. Here we used hounds for centuries, a pack of hounds to pursue one boar, wear it out and hold it at bay, then, one or more running dogs/catch dogs were sent in and a man came with a spear to finish it off. Now, numbers of boars have exploded over here and the Guns are boss so now we have sweep hunts. In most of Europe, running dogs are forbidden, even their crosses, hounds hunt too wide, so for the sweep hunts, small agile terriers with good noses turn out to be the very best. The
  13. Hello all, Feel free to have a look at WWW.xosha.eu for some South African bushpig hunting with hounds. We rarely use catch dogs but with the rising popularity of the Dogo Argentina that is sure to change.
