stephen58 replied to Matt's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Beat me to it Rolfe !! -
read Matt the Rats ; posting and save your money ! have you tried trapping/snaring/ terriers ???
-
no ;it is not a big secret !! but Owls eat rodents! hence secondary poisoning !
-
Hi Bogwoppit ; you are obviously not a professional pest controller other wise you would not be asking these questions ? hope you have good third party liability insurance just in case you accidently poison some one;s dog !!! I think that my all time classic tale must be went to a lady;s house " we saw a rat on a bird table ; we put some pioson on the bird table ; but the song birds keep eating it before the rats dose !! " I will be glad when the day come;s that the general public cannot by poison Steve

Hi Rolfe , been meaning to put these photgraphs up for the last couple of days , i'm now getting better catches with the talpex trap as you can see in the first photograph, ( around the chest instead of around the abdomen ). This was using your idea of the v cut out into the ground, and me setting the trigger / pin on a fine tickle . But i still prefer my duffus traps . ( second picture ) best regards steve ,

Hi John B , I think ? that the idea/principle works on the idea that the corvid see,s it image in the mirror and thinks that it,s got an intruder in it,s territory and enters the trap , but I think that the idea will only work on a side entry trap !! have any other members of THL tried this type of trap ? best regards Steve
-
Hi John B , first question ? how much is your book going to cost with p & p ? secondly have you tried the Larson trap with a mirror in , which is sold by a firm just up the road from you ,do they work ? or is it just a gimmick ? not that I have trouble in catching corvids , but sometimes I wish I could accelarate the trapping of call~birds , any other members input on this matter in using mirrors in there Larson traps would be appriecated best regards Steve
-
Hi Barbus , I told you so !! best regards Steve
-
Hi Tallyho , well done , please do not take this the wrong way ! I think you will be doing some carpentry soon ? that Larson trap look,s like it has nearly had it,s day, I know that photograph,s can lie ,if you look at the catching compartment on the left , the trap door has not closed fully ( weak spring ?) or may be the top rail/strut is warped, thus not allowing it to close fully ? any way Tallyho keep up the campaign and best regards Steve

Hi D S, not far off the name/product it looks like ERADIBAIT , 100% poison free ! and made from natural products ???? how the hell it is supposed to kill the Rats is beyond me!! , apparently it,s approved by the Barn Owl Trust, for which I can under~stand to stop secondary poisoning, hope this has thrown some light on the matter, Steve -
well done young man , that vixen looks in fine fettle , good on you for checking that she was not in cub !! BUT turn your back on the way she is looking ,she is obvisobily heading back some where !! she might have had weaned the cub,s early and her teat,s might be dry, have a good look around your permission ,the rabbit,s down here in Sussex are half grown already !! best regards Steve

Hi Rolfe , great trapping and photo , that,s what I was trying to achieve , until I sussed it and the penny dropped next Mole job I,m going to use Talpex only ,and use your tip about cutting the " V " out , is that wee spade/graft a Bulldog by any chance , that farmers used to use to lift out Thishles/Ragwort , if so I have one or simular ideal size for the Talpex traps best regards Steve
-
" yeah right M T, and I,m a bloody Leprechaun " Ditch I wish you would not post like that up , laughted so much, nearly spilted my cup of coffee over the keyboard !! a classic !!! Steve
-
Hi Rolfe ,thank you , for those two tips, i,ll also try your tip about cutting the " V "out next time i use the Talpex traps !! regards Steve
-
Hi Rolfe, nicely caught Mole in that photo, as you look at your photo my catches tend to be literally in the middle or little back further!! I think I might have sussed why!! I think that I might have to much of the trigger pin going through the plate ( not fine enough tickle ) thus allowing the Mole to procede through the trap that little more before the trap fires off, your opinion or other,s would be welcomed best regards Steve
-
Hi Tommo , used to have the privilege of knowing a old vermin trapper many years ago , he use to press mud on both sides of the firing washer on the scissor trap he would say to me" ol mole, he knows between mud and metal, boy " best regards Steve
-
Hi Rolfe , won,t argue about the power of the spring ,just ask my fingers , only got caught once ,bloody well hurt ( don,t laugh ) I don't know wether you do this with your Talpex traps or not? but I have noticed that the trigger/plate where the trigger pin goes through the hole , have got metal burrs on, where the punch/die has got blunt in the manufacturing process , I de~burr them using a smooth file and slighty CS,K them so that there is no drag when they fire off ,as a matter of intrest where do you buy your Talpex traps from? hope this little tip has been of some help to you and other

Hi Rolfe , I,ve got a few Talpex traps in my armoury, I know they are the new" in " traps at the moment!!! good idea about the " V " in the side of the tunnel I will have to try this next time I use them , but I,m strictly a Duffus trap man , I also employ this method of putting soil under the trigger/plate, but I find that the Talpex tends to catch the Mole around the abdomen , rather than around the chest when using Duffus trap , maybe I,m just being pickerty/fussy!!! I think that the trigger/plate on the Talpex could be wider so that the trap fires off quicker, thus catching the Mole aro

Hi Glenn, Finally managed to get out and do a bit of rat snaring, managed to catch one rat! One snare was knocked and fired off I can almost hear you now ... " have you got your f***ing ears painted on !" Here's a few photographs for you too have a look at , Mind you it was a filthy night down here if you look at the rat in the fifth photograph it looks half drowned! Thank you very much for the snares much appreciated ! (they're great) Sorry about the last photograph slightly out of focus , Best regards Steve
-
Hi Compo ,thanks for putting up that link , just watched it , very enjoy able, missed it last night ! best regards Steve

Hi Barbus ,welcome aboard , I think you have answered your own question try the barrel traps in the shallow runs first, if you don,t know how to fine tune the traps log on to www.warrenfarm.co.uk,&maybe buy the C.D ROM it will show you how to fine tune the traps !! if you really want to push the boat out P M, Moley who is on this site and buy his video!! also do not buy any traps from the BIG CHEESE COMPANY absolute pony , the springs are weak !! always buy british made traps cost a £ or more but better in the long run ! try scrolling back on this section on mole trapping or search in
