Anyway this discussion has digressed into a different subject. It started as a way to find out if anybody did anything specific to get a yard or 2 more pace into their dogs

You're confusing me, mate.
You've not ran him on fur, just feather,he has great prey drive, but you don't think he's running fast enough?!
Not following you at all!!
So I watch him on open land. My last dog I knew was lightning without needing to put him on anything. He was fast from a pup. Was thinking Id missed something on this one which the other had, other than genetics. He looks fast, he gets decent speed but aint seen him flat out.
Prey drive is evident in him without the need of running him at coneys- 1

Your see how fast he is when he gets behind summat ,what has he bin running after 2 say he not reaching full speed mate
On 03/03/2023 at 19:34, Daniel cain said:He will only run as fast as his genetics allow , maybe take him to a bone man get him checked over for any injuries...drop a few pounds off him,see how he goes? Other than that, good diet of raw and lots of exercise, can you not run him with another lurcher? Get him out ferretting and get some fur into his mouth, may improve his prey drive...I personally would do it now before next season or he be nearly 3 yr old
Prey drive is great. He'd run through brick walls to get to feather! Just aint run him on fur

Is he letting stuff get off like
Aint put him out on owt yet. Only 18months-ish at start of season. He was slow on the mature, didnt feel he had the feet and didnt want to risk injury with him being so heavy.

No way you can build speed up its got to be there I'm more of an up and at um dog person it's all about that take off for me and the places I go stuff tenders to be close to the cover so your dogs gotta get in there and get stuck in, my young dogs very similar looking to yours hes about 10month old showing promise but it's way early days yet
I think it is there. At times I still think he is finding his feet but at 2.5yr he should already have done. He's quick off the mark but seems to not want to go full tilt. Like he aint too sure where his front feet are and was wondering if this was coz he's so heavy up front or a case of he aint judging the distance correctly so slows early to be sure

Maybe I could get him on a lure and open him up on a few longer gallops a week and see if that helps

Steady trotting alongside a bike for example,so the dog's up on his toes few mph faster than fast human walking pace
Not really guilty of that. He does do a few runs with me but mostly he's free running or chasing stuff. Just feel he's got a few yards more pace naturally so was thinking there was something I could do to help or something I was doing was hindering

I am going to judge you now the dog is what he is and if you wanted a slight speed machine should bought whippet. All you can do is keep him fit and thats your lot really
Haha that's a fair point to be honest. I just feel he has got more pace in him just an absolute tank atm put it down to he hadnt found his feet at 1st but he's 2 1/2 now so no longer think thats the issue

Can't do much about his genetics but plenty of free running, keep him fit as possible and don't overfeed. I think pulling on a lead bulks up shoulder muscles too much. I had a pit/bullmastiff that could catch roos in a short sprint, he was a super fit dog and lived until 18. I kick myself for not putting him over a greyhound.
This is what Im thinking maybe the bull in him is defining the addition of muscle. I dont allow him to pull on a lead unless we are running together and even then I try and keep the lead slack

Too much steady work can cause a dog to become muscle bound, I've never seen that happen, all you can really do is work the dog, and try to adjust the diet until the desired results are achieved
Define steady work? Maybe I am guilty of this without realising. I tend to let him free run and chase on the most part

Just keep him as lean and fit as possible, then he'll be at his fastest.
Not sure how to lean him out with his muscle content. Takes away his flexibility in his front end never seems to get up to full tilt though

I'm definitely no expert lol, but dropping the weight of the dog , fitness obviously.
He's as fit as a fiddle just seems to pack on muscle fast

Does he get much free running?
Plenty. Just seems to pack on muscle

If hes got shoulders like a mastiff you're probably keeping him way too heavy as neither a pitbull or a greyhound should have shoulders that heavy also what kind of exercise is he getting. Also he might just be a naturally slow dog
This is him. He's just naturally built. Run him off lead every day just gains mass on his front end quickly

Thought this would be an interesting thread to take advantage of all the knowledge in the forum.
How do you go about building a lurcher's speed. My lad is very heavy on the front and never seems to get into full gallop. Shoulders like a boerbel mind.
As some will guess he's a Bull X, so I'll preempt it all and say there's no need to start the anti BullX talk. I know he wont ever be the quickest, he'll never be out in the slop etc etc, blah blah blah.
Just want to get a thread going where people can pass on knowledge and tips that they have learnt over the years, unjudged -
