  1. That's really interesting cheers. Learning so much on here ?
  2. Not that far off. Always scanning the horizon... Bloody nightmare to walk - he's after anything. Wouldn't have him any other way.
  3. He's just VERY saluki... stubborn, sensitive, independent. Fools around like a puppy when you're not looking, pretends he's too high & mighty for all that when you catch him being an arse ? whines like anything. About anything. Fooks off deaf but always keeps an eye on you. Comes back in his own time.
  4. He's already f****ed off a couple of times and always come back in 10 mins, doesn't like to leave for too long.
  5. That's interesting cheers. Explains the temperament then...
  6. Ha, could just be owt in him then? I'll settle with that x sal ? bloody hell, I've been asked by non-lurcher folk if he's a doberman before ?
  7. Cheers. He's a good lad. Built to chase. Too stocky to just be sal /grey I think, too slight to be much of owt else. Could be anything in there, maybe a bit of bull. Not sure.
  8. He didn't have the acceleration on him to get the rabbits 10m away from him and 3m away from their burrows... ?
  9. Cheers, great advice mate. Yeah def think it's me that needs educating! Might go out just me him and his dog first, then the next time try my lad. I'll see.
  10. I've heard saluki owners are a breed apart themselves ? I'm stubborn and sensitive myself, with a dead tough edge sometimes if it needs it, so maybe I've found my type of dog ?
  11. Think he might have something else in him besides sal/grey?
  12. Haha I agree the lad can be but I love him for it. Too clever by half sometimes, thick as two short planks at others ? Stubborn all the time. 'Just give him time to obey' I keep saying to myself... He does, every time, just takes him 30 seconds... Try to badger him into something, the harder he resists. I like that challenge ?
  13. I guess I know he loves it so much that I'm willing to take some risks with him but not until I've done everything I can with him to try and mitigate the risks like working way way away from big A roads etc...
  14. Thought it might be that. Yeah he was crap at chasing the rabbits when he did once - all went into their burrows too quickly for him. He wanted to stretch out!
  15. Yeah, true, makes me want to work extra hard with him to mitigate the issues and if I can't, he can chase in safer circumstances! 2
  16. Cheers that makes sense. My lad is ridiculously happy when chasing (about 20 rabbits, by accident, on the Isle of Arran, in a gorse thicket just off a beach where they all had their burrows ??)
  17. That's my worry. Seen it in action with him already too. How do you square that risk with the love you've got for your dog? Deep question but it's that I'm struggling with a bit, it's why I haven't taken him out yet. Maybe I don't want it enough!!!
  18. Been to Askern with him a couple of times for a fun lure race. This was his first. Head up and slow ? courser spotting the turns...
  19. His dinner would be some of it but I'd post what's left on giving up the game so someone else can have rabbit pie lol ?
  20. Yeah that makes sense. Would go out with a friend whose got a few permissions so that side is sorted but I'm just very cautious about his prey drive taking over his common sense, running over roads etc. Need to get his recall and dead-stop way stronger before he goes out.
  21. Definitely start like that I think anyway, give me more of a taste of what he might be like out in the field. I suspect pretty much uncontrollable by me as he is now ? Got a lot to learn - the stubborn sensitivity is a f****er to work with!
  22. Sorry if I caused offence - he was let go from a 'traveller's site' after he was injured is what the rescue told me so just repeating that. No judgement here at all of a whole ethnicity or way of life, just wanted to know if that background might help to understand his commands or the way he might have worked. Obvs know commands likely to be different for everyone, though if there are common commands that people tend to use when out they'd be useful to learn.
  23. Can you tell me why? Here to learn so no snark intended. Fitness? Build? Cross? Would like to know more as don't want to put him through something if he can't take it. Guessing it's because he's heavy on the saluki?
  24. Cheers guys, already learning a lot and loving it.
