Your dogs all still down off stitch dan?
Whats left of em yes. He made it look easy. His daughter use to til the last 2 years. She just turned 7 and the miles have caught up to her. She still looks ok on the outside for the most part but she is not ok. I only ran her a couple times this last winter just to show her to a few guys but other than that she is pretty much retired. We just bred her to a grandson of Stitch. We shall see.
What a beautiful gyp. Being sired by your Stitch out of a Jake daughter, man, what a performance bred girl to raise a few pups out of. If her mother was one of Jakes daughters was it out of my Timex gyp or George park's gyp. If it was Timex, she is the black gyp in my avitar. Either way, they were both worth breeding to. Jake was Hardesty's best at the time, but Neil always bought top dogs, had a great eye for dogs.

oh heck yeah! she had four brothers that were top dogs. On another note, Timex was a full sister to Vaughn's blue dog that anchored the mountain Lion on the old video

Great thread! That first video with the three stags running the coyote I personally don't have any problem with, while I agree that video should not be used as an 'advertisement' sometimes quarry can be stubborn and that looked like extremely tough terrain. If I was on that hunt I would have been well and truly engaged! While the dogs don't look like ace dogs by any stretch, but not too many running dogs perform like a game dog on the dispatch, but I wish all mine would! The second video was basically an execution and a bit of a bore to me...
I really wish I had some of my old clips to show you. I think you would enjoy them much more.

well you keeping the line tight Dan, and both good proven dogs, prob the best way to go .Do you ever out x to a pure greyhound , or a deerhound , more so the greyhound to had bit more speed , or do the stag line you keep hold enough speed with every generation . Just curious thats all Dan , as over its either lurcher x lurcher , or pure running dogs used greyhound, whippet, saluki, deerhound , back working breeds collies, terriers , etc
I don't breed that often to be honest. I haven't really used any pure greyhounds that I can think of. My dad bred a field trial greyhound to a coyote bred bitch awhile back. I'm no historian but Id say these dogs carry a lot of greyhound blood. Id never breed to a deerhound nor would I hunt one. The "good ones" Ive "heard" of fought real hard but they didn't run tough. They pulled up when they was sore or whatever. Cant have that when ya runnin coyotes. This ground is rough as hell and they gotta run tough not just fast.

Ive often wondered why more folks over yalls way don't use them types. As an outsider lookin in it makes sense that they'd be good to go but I really don't know.

Interesting thread though, is the way of life dying out?
Do you get many youngsters coming through wanting to keep stags and yote hounds?
Id say it is dying out sorta but its a very slow death. There are plenty of youngsters runnin dogs. My 3 are out every weekend with me and I can name prolly at least a few dozen other families like that as well.

Yes I'm back into the hounds. I got out for a couple years but my dad kept the blood going so now I'm back at it pretty much right where I left off.

He died the year before. Snapped his front leg in 2. Them kinda dogs are just too damn big and they always get hurt. Other than that he was a fine animal. Throat dog and had enough speed to catch most coyotes once he got rollin. Got too hot though but Ive noticed that in several lines and so have many of my buddies. Its just not just his line. We've ran into it hear and there over the years.
I like the looks of that dog on the box in your above post. It's parts are in the right places and I like how it's muscles are laid out. She loos part July or something like that, is that the case?
No she is not. She is a little too tall for my liking but other than that she is perfect. She stands 29 and that's just too damn tall for a female. 27 is plenty for any female and 29 is damn sure tall enough for male dogs. Yeti was 32 and that's way too tall.

do you ever use bull x grey for coyotes?
I don't personally but sure folks use them here and there. They're not much good on coyotes though. Even the 3/4s are too slow to be of much use. My buddies that have fooled with em say they get fast enough when only 1/8th bulldog in em. I had one but he was not of much use. He was ok in the speed department but he wasn't much on the killin part. He did 1 single though so I was pretty happy with that. Over a short time though he softened up and then he pretty much quit. Coyotes bite very very hard and they make a lot of dogs quit. Its just all part of it.
Edited to say that the one he did do single there was another dog in the truck with him that day. That makes a big difference as well. I don't know why so I cant say much more than that but dogs know when they are the only dog in the back of the truck. It changed their mindset. A lot of dogs over the years have done one single here and there on split races and such. Its a different world when ya load one up alone though.

I would say Dan E that the dogs must be super fit to have the energy to finish one of them off after a hard run, is there any specific training you do or is it just a case of getting out as often as you can and run one down and is it a challenge to breed good coyote dogs, cheers.
I road my dogs a lot and the we also just walk hunt them on creeks plus kinda road em down creeks. Its hard to explain if you're not from here. But no there is nothin special we do. Bout the only way you can really get one in tough shape it to run em on coyotes.
Missed the last part of your message. Yes it can be a challenge to breed coyote dogs. Its a challenge to breed any dogs actually.

Those dogs in that video are no good. That being said single handed coyote dogs are not easy to come by but they are also not as hard to find as some may try to make you believe. It usually comes down to the fact that most people are too chicken shit to find out cuz they don't want their dog to fail. Good throat dogs will always pin a coyote single handed as long as they are not completely gassed when they get there IF THEY GET THERE. The run up is extremely hard on a dog unless you are a bumper dumpin. Plus the plowed ground around here when frozen is a mother f****r to run on and the coyote has the advantage cuz they cruise across it like they are runnin on an all weather track.

when you tong them they'd be out for about 40 seconds if you let them come back around but it only takes seconds to hang em and stick them so by the time they would of come round they haven't got any blood left so they never do.
got to be dead to soak other wise the vet goes mental about a pig with a stab to the neck swimming around in a tank filled with warer about 70 degrees with a slaughterman trying to drown it to stop it from screaming.they don't like that.

It was a mistake mating the lad who bred him was away at work and his missus was watching the dogs so his Laguna whippet caught her.but I checked with Jeff after leaving the blokes house about the dams breeding incase the lad was telling a porky.
Gotcha. Mistake breedings sometimes make some crackers. HAHA!

Some mature slower than others but make far better workers in every aspect of dog work from sporting to cattle to assist dogs.
While I agree with you maybe that some dogs do mature slower but in the end make better dogs than say their siblings, I personally would never keep a dog that was slow to mature. I cant stand it and they wont make it on my yard. I prefer an early starter that just keeps getting better and better til they obviously slow down due to age. Its the only kinda dog I will keep.
